Beginning

Where we started:

2013, Jane and Hayley had taught collaboratively for the year. In 2014 we extended this to 4 teachers with NE/Year 1.

We had stopped using task boards as we had the belief that students would be more independent if they had more choice. Children were encouraged to do things that helped their learning but mostly had free choice.

Term 1 2014…After becoming a bit frustrated with some of the children not doing their jobs, I made this…

They had to do all of these jobs before they could choose an independent activity.

In March, we decided that we wanted to direct our students to do more literacy focused activities at learning time. So I trialled the next version with a group of readers (Green level).

They had to do every Must do each day and 2 of the Can dos.

These were laminated and the students ticked these off with whiteboard markers and cleaned them each day.

After a while, I was doing this with all my readers who were at Yellow or above.

In Term 2 we introduced this version to all students Yellow and above in our team.

Term 3 - We started a double sided version that lasted for the week. They had to complete all must dos and their choice of can dos each week. At this stage, they were still laminated copies.

At the end of term 4 I visited Amesbury and checked out how they did their self managed timetables.

We decided that all students would have them from when they started and made them paper copies that they would make each week to make it more meaningful, authentic and have more choice.

They have the set Must dos and then glue in the Can dos of their choice.

At the beginning of this year, I made some ‘masters’ that we now use for the new new entrants while they get used to using them.

These are printed in black and white and replaced every week.

After a while, all students make them by gluing their choices to the bottom.

We have special gold tickets that students can earn the right to have. These are activities they can do outside/ on the deck.

still spend a lot of time going over the expectations.● We are still looking at different activities to introduce next.
