If you intend to self-pack or partially self-pack, here are some handy tips to make your packing process easy.

DO + Decide which items you will pack and which you will leave

for your removalist to pack

+ Ensure you pack your belongings in an appropriate manner. If WridgWays does not pack for you, our insurance policy may not cover you

+ Use crushed paper for packing (i.e. butcher’s paper) to protect your items. Newspaper may stain your belongings. Place paper between each layer of items in packing box to minimise risk of damage

+ Use zip-lock bags for smaller objects like screws, nuts and bolts

+ Start by packing the belongings you use the least (e.g. books, DVDs, CDs, items stored in your garage or roof space)

+ Pack lighter items in bigger boxes and heavier items in smaller boxes to ensure they aren’t overloaded and too heavy to handle safely (e.g. pack books in a smaller boxes)

+ Pack similar items in the same boxes

+ Wrap items individually. Place heavier objects on the bottom and lighter items on top

+ Securely tape boxes at the top, bottom and sides

+ Label each box clearly, write contents and room destination. Create an inventory list for each box to track key items

+ Pack essential items that you will need to access when moving in a separate box so that you can feel settled on the first night in your new home

+ Call your moving consultant to arrange pick up of your moving boxes

DON’T + Pack fragile items such as mirrors or paintings.

Your removalist team will pack them with the care and protection they require

+ Pack items into pieces of furniture, such as chest of drawers, as this causes too much strain on the furniture

+ Use fruit boxes or supermarket boxes as these are not designed to ensure the safety of fragile contents during a removal

+ Pack any items that exhibit visible signs of mould

+ Overload moving boxes

+ Under-pack boxes, i.e. space between items. Use paper to fill these gaps as a loosely packed carton is very susceptible to damage or collapse

+ Pack dangerous goods and prohibited items – refer to “Dangerous Goods and Prohibited Items Guide”
