  • Vedder / Chilliwack Sockeye fishery

Eleven communities from the Chilliwack and Pilalt Tribe and Se-ma:th have explored ways to access Chilliwack Sockeye. These communities have expressed a historical interest in the fish which pass through their respective territories. The 11 First Nations had to work and negotiate with DFO to plan and implement this fishery.

DFO provided access for up to 1 fisher per community in Chilliwack Lake with a set or drift net (300 feet). Troy Ganzeveld has been our primary fisher and I was his deckhand for a couple of nights when he was unable to find a fish partner.

At the end of July Sema:th was persistent and was able to try a couple of evening fisheries in the lower part of the Vedder River near the Highway #1 Bridge. It was not very successful because it was late in the migration period but we were able to catch 76 Sock-eye and 5 Chinook. The important factor is that we were able to re-establish a fishery in our own territory and provide some fish to community members in a year that was dismal in terms of sockeye returns everywhere.

We hope to be able to plan and implement this fishery earlier next time to target the peak migration period, and ideally find a way to expand the fishery to allow for more participation. If you have any questions feel free to contact Murray @ 604 309 7824.

Sema:th Traditional Use & Occupancy Study

The Sema:th Lands & Resources Department is get-ting ready to launch this histor-ic project. The TUOS will docu-ment the Sema:th peoples rela-tionship to the land, and how that has changed over time and why. This will be a key tool for us moving forward as we assert Sema:th Aboriginal Rights & Title over Sema:th Territory. It’s also an incredible opportunity to share, learn and celebrate Sema:th culture! Please stay tuned for more updates and opportunities to be involved in this exciting pro-ject.
