SEMEN COLLECTION – ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION

OBJECTIVE:

Artificial insemination is practiced in cage system to get fertile eggs. In artificial insemination, semen is collected from male and deposited in to the female reproductive tract artificially.

HOT AIR OVEN

Hot air oven is electrical devices which use dry heat to sterilize

PURPOSE:* USED IN AUTOCLAVE PROCESS TO STERILIZE TIPS

AND FUNNELS* USED IN DRYING UP OF DRAPER WRAPPED TIPS &

FUNNEL IN HOT AIR OVEN TO MAKE MOISTURE FREE

PURPOSE : USED DURING CLEANING PROCESS OF TIPS & FUNNELS

A) PREPARATION OF MALE FOR ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION:

* Trimming of feathers around the vent area.

* Training of males to donate semen by gentle massaging of the back – one week before the starting artificial insemination.

* From a given male, semen is collected on twice a week.

* Milking of 2 – 3 male’s semen in to one funnel.

* Those birds not producing semen are identified and marked and separate them in a different row for treatment.

B) PREPARATION OF FEMALE:* Female should be trained for eversion – once it comes in to lay.

* Each flock should be marked in to 3 groups. Each group of females should be inseminated two times a week on fixed days.

First group – Monday & Thursday Second group – Tuesday & Friday Third group _ Wednesday & Saturday

* Sunday is no insemination day.

C) INSEMINATION PROCEDURE:* Semen is collected from 2 -3 males in to a single funnel and used to inseminate 20- 30 females.

* Quantity of semen from one male usually measures 0.5 ml. This is enough for 10 females at the rate of 0.05 ml per bird.

* While collecting semen care should be taken to avoid fecal contamination and injury to phallus (male reproductive organ).

* Tips should be inserted half an inch in to vagina and semen should be deposited slowly to avoid semen flowing back out of vagina. Tips should be changed for every bird. Broken tips should be discarded.

* While everting, abdomen should be pressed gently to avoid damage to any internal organ, over eversion and to minimize handling stress.

D) ACCESSORIES CLEANING PROCEDURES: * Keep separate trained personnel for the purpose. He should clean his hands before starting the job.

* First wash the tips and funnel in clean water.

* Followed by wash in soap water.

* Then boil the tips and funnel in clean water for 20 minutes.

* Then Autoclave wrapping tips in clean drape water.

* Dry tips and funnel in hot air oven with wrapped condition to make it moisture free.

* Not to touch the tips in hand till AI (artificial insemination) is done.

Note: Tips and funnels are to be dip in 1% HCL (Hydrochloric acid) for 30 minutes (Only once a week)
