AUGUST 2011JERSEY CATALOGUE

Page 2: Semex Alliance August 2011 Jersey Catalogue

Since June 1, 2011 the Semex Jersey Program has been led by one of the world’s foremost experts in the Jersey breed, Russell Gammon.

Russell is extremely well-known in the dairy cattle industry through his leadership and experience with Jersey Canada. Russell began his career at Jersey Canada as Assistant Editor of the Canadian Jersey Breeder, progressing to the role of Executive Secretary in 1991, a position he held until joining Semex. While at Jersey Canada, Russell was a strong proponent for Canadian Jerseys, promoting the breed internationally and helping to stimulate business activity levels last achieved in the late 1960s. Under his leadership, Jersey Canada registered more than 1000 new Jersey prefixes between 2004

and early 2011. Additionally, he coordinated strategic planning and negotiated joint ventures to benefit Canadian Jersey breeders. His dairy industry leadership roles are well-documented and include:

• Serving as President of the Canadian Livestock Genetics Association

• Participating in the formation of Canada’s Multi-Breed Classification System

• Serving as North American Vice President for the World Jersey Cattle Bureau from 2002-2008

• Working with a team to develop the World Jersey Cheese Awards

Russell’s dedication to the Jersey industry has been recognized

multiple times, most recently in 2011 when Russell was presented the Distinguished Achievement Award by the World Jersey Cattle Bureau.

“How motivating to join the Semex family and discover even more passion and excitement for the Jersey breed than I had realized was resident within the company!” says Gammon. “With a team of devoted and energetic ‘Jersey Champions’ around the globe, the sky’s truly the limit for Jersey genetic progress at Semex! We view our clients as our partners; providing them with the best Jersey cows possible is our goal. Look to code 200 sires for all of your Jersey genetic needs, as our genomic selection takes us higher and faster than ever before!”

Russell Gammon, Semex Jersey Champion

“Like most dairymen, I want a cow that pays her own way. A cow that comes into the parlour, gets milked and likes to be there and I like to have her in the herd.

Like my father before me, I breed for high components, low somatic cell and an udder that’s good to work with in the parlour…an all-around trouble-free cow.

We have always used Semex genetics and rely on Semex to breed a complete cow that is trouble-free, efficient and profitable for us.”

John Brand, Jr. and son Jeb Hayfield Jerseys, Clinton, OntarioMilking 100 Jersey Cows

Semex has long been known as the home of Balanced Breeding, and has a Jersey history studded with notable successes. As the Jersey market continues to grow and become increasingly international in scope, Semex’s Jersey Program is evolving to meet these needs.

Led by international Jersey veteran Russell Gammon, the Semex Jersey Program is dedicated to its ultimate goal of providing Semex customers worldwide with the very best Jersey sires available. Listening to dairymen that work with the Jersey cow day in and out, Semex is aggressively seeking sires that will deliver the results they’re looking for… low maintenance, high yielding cows that are built to last.

We’re taking advantage of genomic selection and identifying future champions from the pool of young sires for our Genomax™ lineup, all while maintaining a crisp focus on Semex’s time-tested Balanced Breeding philosophy.

Each and every mating focuses on one very simple and key question… ‘Will this bull help dairymen add value to their operations and increase their profits?’ Working with Semex’s global team of Jersey experts, we understand that no other question is more important for our clients.

This has netted great successes for Semex customers already. We’ve been adding top-notch, high composite index young sires to the 200JE code that will be the breed-leading daughter proven sires in just a few short years. We are certain that by working together we will breed the next generation of Jersey cows to be the most profitable yet.

HURONIA CENTURION VIRGINIA 24L SUP EX-92-5E-CAN

The future looks even brighterAn age-old adage in cattle breeding, and indeed all efforts in life, is “you get what you go for”. The truth of this statement has been proven repeatedly over the decades.

And so, the Semex Jersey Program charges forth with the explicit goal of accessing male seed stock from the Jersey breed’s most famous cow families. We constantly strive to focus on families that are famous because they deliver over multiple generations.

In our relentless pursuit of the best possible product line for our customers, we have acquired young bulls that are from world-class families that you’ll know and admire. We’re sure you’ll want to use young bulls from these lines.

Consider two young Valentino sons from the genomic phenomenon Pearlmont Impuls Daffy at Sunset Canyon: David and Director. These bulls are very likely the highest JH1 Free Valentino sons in the world. Or how about a BW Legion son from a full sister to Bridon Vincent - remember this name - Bridon Validation. Oh, those true breeding Virginias! And how about this sampler of the breed’s best families: The Flowers and Fantastics at Molly Brook; the Belles of RJ Farms or the Belles at Lencrest; The Prize family and Katie at Brentwood; Vanessas in Australia; The Anthems from Sunset Canyon; the A family at Gaby Farm.

The great families and top young sires are where you find them. We’ll go anywhere we need to, to access tomorrow’s leading sires for you.

Rely on and count on Semex to be ever striving to assemble a sire product line that exceeds today’s stellar crop tomorrow!

UNDERSTANDING CANADIAN SIRE PROOFS

LIFETIME PROFIT INDEX - The LPI provides a single rating of the overall genetic merit of a sire based on theproduction, conformation and auxiliary traits known to affect longevity, durability and profitability of its daughters. If thesire has been genotyped for the 50K SNP panel, a GLPI is provided instead of an LPI.

ESTIMATED BREEDING VALUE- Production proofs are expressed as Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs), which aremeasured in Mature Equivalent Kilograms, for Milk, Fat and Protein Yield. The single EBV published for Milk, Fat andProtein Yield is the average of the first three lactations. EBVs are also provided for Fat and Protein Percentages.

CANADIAN TEST DAY MODEL - The Canadian Dairy Network (CDN) is responsible for calculating production proofs forsires and cows using the Canadian Test Day Model (CTDM), which compares the progeny of each sire to theircontemporaries using data from each test day. A unique feature of the CTDM is that separate EBVs are available for Milk,Fat and Protein yield, as well as Persistency and Somatic Cell Score, for each of the first three lactations.

ROLLING PRODUCTION BASE - Production and conformation EBVs are calculated relative to a rolling base which isupdated in January each year. In 2011, the rolling base includes all cows born during a 3-year period (2003-2005)having test day records in the CTDM evaluation. Active sires tend to have higher production EBVs, since their proofs areexpressed relative to this cow base. Conversely, the EBVs of older sires tend to decline as the rolling base is adjusted.

STANDARD DEVIATIONS - Simply put, the standard deviation tells us how far a bull is from the mean (average) valueof all the bulls. The graph on the right shows the normaldistribution of bull proofs for conformation traits with 68% ofbull ranging from -5 to +5, 95% from -10 to +10, 99%from -15 to +15, etc.).

For most bulls their scores will be close to the average of all thebulls, while fewer bulls will score at the high end or at the lowend. Very few bulls reach scores as high as +19 as comparedwith over 99% of bulls falling in the range of +15 to -15.For more information on Canadian Proving System visit the Canadian Dairy Network at http://www.cdn.ca

PRODUCTION - Based on theCanadian Test Day Model usingEstimated Breeding Values from1st, 2nd & 3rd lactation for Milk,Fat and Protein yield which areblended together to achieve onepublished rating. A Rolling GeneticBase is used to express ProductionEBVs. In 2011, this base includesall cows born during a 3-yearperiod centred 7 years ago (2003-2005) having test day records inthe CTDM genetic evaluationanalysis.

Adaughters and herds with production data

Reliabilityaccuracy - increases with more daughters

Lifetime Profit Index 51% Production34% Durability15% Health & FertilityGLPI - Genomic LPI

B CONFORMATION - Conformationproofs are expressed as EstimatedBreeding Values (EBVs) displayedusing a -20 to +20 scale, with astandard deviation of 5. A rollingGenetic Base is used to expressConformation EBVs. In 2011, thisbase includes all proven bulls bornin the most recent 10-year period(1996-2005). A sire’sconformation proof is based on allclassifications of his first lactationdaughters using a linear typeclassification system. Daughterscores provide the basis for EBVsfor major type and descriptivetraits. Major traits can be used tonarrow down the field of sires (e.g.feet and legs.) Descriptive traitscan be used to focus on specifictraits (e.g. correct foot angle).

C DESCRIPTIVE TRAITS -Descriptive traits are evaluatedusing the same method as theConformation but focuses onspecifics with the greater numberbeing preferable except for theMid-Scoring traits that are circled. For the Mid-Scoring traits thehigher the number the greater thetendency to exhibit the trait asnoted by the letter (e.g. 9S - veryhigh tendency to transmit Straightfor Rear Leg Side View). A value of0 is considered the most correct.

Semex’s Health$mart™ sires are identified as those that sire the most valuable and profitable cows on the dairy. These sires excel for qualities that dairies can easily quantify in their ledgers including Daughter Fertility, Milking Speed, SCS, Productive Life and Daughter Calving Ease. Dairymen can trust that a Semex Health$mart™ sire will have a positive financial impact, saving on vet bills and medications, staff time, as well as lost breedings and lost production.

Available within ai24™ or separately, Semex’s computerized mating program ProMate™ is the most advanced mating system available for dairymen. This software reduces inbreeding losses and delivers improved performance and longevity. ProMate’s™ extensive pool of sires finds ideal, tailored breeding solutions to help you meet your goals.

Our sexed semen product, SEMEXX™, offers a new, fast track solution for herd replacements. It lets you increase your herd from within without searching for costly replacements or taking biohazard risks. Additionally, you are getting a tighter rein on your herd’s genetic future.

Semex’s Designer Series™ sires are Semex’s elite type sires. Hand-selected for their ability to sire individuals with Semex’s famous high-type look, these elite sires are proven to be those that transmit the head-turning look breeders everywhere appreciate.

These bloodlines have demonstrated tremendous production and functional type. Combining all this with elite proven sire results and genomic assurance, Semex’s Premier™ Young Sires are the best value in the industry.

As thousands of sires enter stud worldwide each year, very few will be returned to service, added to a proof sheet and made available to dairymen worldwide. Those that succeed in their second crop are widely considered to be the breed’s elite and most desirable sires. At Semex we call these sires the Master Series™.

Semex has been an industry leader in genomic research, and its Genomax™ product represents the very best options for dairymen looking to put tomorrow’s genetics to work today. Many Genomax™ sires will appeal to large dairies, as these young sires have already received favorable genomic results and are awaiting their first crop daughters. Genomax™ teams are available based on individual selection criteria and are popular by using these bulls in a team to increase reliability.

Semex high fertility Repromax™ sires are the best of the best for semen fertility. ai24™ is Semex’s Solution for Efficient AI. The centerpiece of this innovative reproductive management program is Heatime™ the 24-hour a day, 365-day a year heat detection system. With this program dairymen can expect increased pregnancy rates, fewer health problems, reduced labor costs and more cows back in the milking line sooner.

Semex researchers have developed Repromix™, a pooled semen product, to provide dairymen with one powerful ‘cocktail’ to fight infertility. Each ‘cocktail’ is a high fertility package that provides proven genetics to fit producer’s specific needs. Each sire has been chosen after careful evaluation for semen quality and non-return rates by Semex laboratory and genetic staff.
