Seminar 8. Activitatea terminologica - standardization - organisms;language planning
Terminology standardizationcan be subdivided into two distinct activities:
standardization of terminologies,
standardization of terminological principles and methods
terminology standardization precedes subject standardization
Beginnings of standardization: - the International lectrotechnical !ommission "I!# - was founded in $ondon, %&'(
following a recommendation passed at the International lectrical !ongress, in )t*
$ouis, +), on % )eptember %&'.
im: to standardize the terminology of electrotechnology for the sa/e of the 0uality of
its subject standards12

re-activated only in %&%
the !ommittee started operation in %&= "after I#* )ince then the secretariat of ISO/TC

Standardization rel. to terminology!"
Institutional standardization1 a body sets the preferred use for a designation
International standardization1 an international body sets the characteristics that a
product should have and the term"s# appropriate for it
(non-interventionist) standardization1 a terminological system monitors itself by
mutual accord of its end-users

6he >I!E8 will follow these steps to develop the harmonized terminology:
1. Identiy #on#epts and reeren#e terminology"
8etermine the terms that will re0uire harmonization*
Identify which of the terms are uni0ue concepts*
Geference terminology resources to find matching concepts*
). e%elop model"
8evelop a model for concepts as a terminology that depicts concepts and their attributes and
the relationships between concepts*
@repare terminology to be incorporated into a reference terminology, such as the >!I
6hesaurus*
3. Annotate model"
+se terminology curation tools, such as the >!IKs )emantic Integration or/bench ")I# to
annotate the model with the reference terminology*
. *e%ie0 #on#epts 0it, t,e #ommunity"
Inform eAperts in pediatric community of terminology development effort and facilitate
collaboration*
)olicit input and feedbac/ on proposed concepts from the pediatric community and
harmonize with model*
. 2oad metadata and generate tools" $oad metadata from the annotated model to a metadata repository, such as the >!IKs cancer
8ata )tandards Gepository "ca8)G#*
$everage open source clinical research tools to eAtract metadata to generate content specific
clinical research tools*
6he terminology development process includes the following steps:
%* Terminology Planning:
6his phase includes identifying and prioritizing subsets based on >I!E8 scientific visioning
and other initiatives or use cases, identifying clinical research use cases and defining the
scope of the terminology, and identifying and engaging )ubject Catter Aperts ")Cs# to
provide input into the terminology, as described below*
=* Terminology Development:
6he development of the terminology is a collaborative effort, which includes soliciting input
and feedbac/ from )Cs into the proposed concepts, and then resolving conflicts and
