I. Introduction
Therapeutic communication is the establishment of connection between a patient
and a health care provider. It is a key component of health care delivery, used to ensure
that patients understand their conditions and recommended course of treatment. Patient
also tend to be feel more comfortable when they feel more comfortable and supported
and attended to by the people around them. This can create a trusting relationship, which
may lead to more open discussion on their part of the patient, including disclosure of
symptoms, that may be of concern for the medical team.
Health care providers learn about the fundamentals of therapeutic communication
in training and have an opportunity to practice in clinical skills labs. Sometimes referred
to as bed side manner, communication involves consciously thinking about word
choices, body language, tone, and other signals. Care providers who are brusque or
appear judgemental are less likely to establish trust. Others may not feel supportive if
they seem edgy, nervous, r worried. Someone who communicates calmly and effectively
can make a patient feel comfortable and relaxed.
This seminar will examine all aspects of therapeutic communication within the
context of all nurse- patient relationship. Traditional therapeutic techniques will be
discussed in details. Emphasis will be given to nurse behaviours that promote therapeutic
communication, as well as potential barriers to effective communication. Many examples
of therapeutic communication will be presented throughout.
The main objectives upon completion of this seminar is that the students will be
able to distinguish therapeutic communication from social interaction. Upon identifying
situations when limit- setting, assertiveness, and conflict resolution, they would
distinguish behaviours that promote therapeutic communication from those that hinder
effective interaction. Also identifying the influence of culture, spirituality, and
boundaries on therapeutic, they could select effective communication techniques for a
variety of situations.
