I congratulate SEDF for organizing this seminar to highlight investment in poultry cluster value chain.

Inauguration of breeder farm at Tando Allayar and hatchery unit at Dhabeji is testimony to the fact that SEDF

intends to promote investment in value chain, where gaps in value chain turned into investment opportunities.

Presence of exiting players like Equipment Suppliers, Broiler Farmers, Feed Millers, relevant Government

Officials and most importantly large number of representatives of financial institutions showed their interest in

supporting poultry cluster. Pakistan is poised to be the primary food bucket for Middle East and establishment of

modern and state of the art enterprises in the agri sector is need of the day. I am looking forward to encourage

exiting players for expansion of their units and prospective entrepreneurs for restoring opportunities.

I feel elated to mention that seminar was organized during inauguration of Marhaba Protein Farm, breeder farm

and hatchery unit, to demonstrate support that SEDF is providing to various clusters in agri-sector of Sindh. The

seminar comprised of the presentations by Trade development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) to highlight the

export potential in poultry sector and provide resolve to challenges therein. Animal Quarantine Department

educated poultry players with requirements of importing countries. State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) presented

various incentivized financing schemes being offered under their umbrella. Mr. Kabool Muhammad Khatian

President Sindh Chamber of Agriculture/ Member SEDF Board of Directors encouraged exiting poultry farmers

to invest in poultry sector. Wherein, in my presentation endeavors of SEDF were highlighted. SEDF will hold

more cluster specific Seminars to fulfill the gaps in value chain in different sectors.

Event Brief:

SEDF, with its vision to promote agri businesses of Sindh, organized Inauguration Ceremony of Marhaba Protein

Farm at Dhabeji near Karachi. Marhaba Protein Farm is a state of the art facility, which was provided interest rate

subsidy by SEDF. The facility includes hatchery unit and breeder farm, with a purpose to cater poultry industry

of Sindh. Participants of the event were from diverse backgrounds and organizations, which included Bankers,

Farmers, Suppliers, and Government officials. Prominent presence was of Mr. Abdul Bari Pitafi, Minister

Livestock, Fisheries & Cooperative Department, Government of Sindh, and Mr. Aijaz Ahmed Mahesar, Secretary

to Government of Sindh, Livestock and Fisheries Department. Other key participants represented organizations

like State Bank of Pakistan, Trade Development Authority Pakistan, Ministry of National Food Security &

Research, Pakistan Poultry Association, Sindh Poultry Vaccine, and Sindh Chamber of Agriculture.

The event was formally started by recitation of Holy Quran, which was followed by a brief about Marhaba Protein

Farms and M. WALI group by Mr. Asif Riaz, General Manager, Marhaba Protein Farms. He mentioned some of

the key facts about the project and introduced company’s objectives as well as past achievements to the audience.

Mr. Asif elaborated that in Sindh 90% of day old chicks (DOCs) are procured from Punjab, which provided with

an opportunity to conceive a hatchery unit in Sindh. He expressed gratitude for the assistance provided by SEDF

and Government of Sindh in making this project viable. M. Wali group, further plans to build facilities to serve

different levels of poultry value chain.

After the conclusion of Mr. Asif’s introduction, Mr. Saeed Ahmed, Joint Director, AC&M Department, State

Bank of Pakistan informed the participants about current status of agri and poultry financing in Pakistan. He

articulated historical trend of financing and key institutions that are involved in financing of poultry sector. He

further mentioned policies adopted by State Bank of Pakistan for promoting Agri financing in Pakistan. Mr. Azhar

Ali Dahar, Director General TDAP, enunciated challenges faced by the poultry sector and different sectors in

Sindh. Furthermore, he contrasted export potential of poultry sector with current state of export from the country.

He also welcomed business community, seeking any kind of assistance from TDAP

Mr. Saeed Ahmed, Chairman Southern Zone, Pakistan Poultry Association, took the stage from Mr. Azhar. He

informed the audience about organizational structure of Pakistan Poultry Association. He also displayed statistics

regarding poultry showing current status and potential of the poultry sector. It was followed by presentation of

Director General, Animal Quarantine Department Mr. Muhammad Ilyas, who educated the audience about

nuances involved in livestock related export from the province. After that, Mr. Kabool Muhammad Khatian,

commented on the role of SEDF and Government of Sindh in promoting agriculture in the province. He also

enunciated support of Sindh Chamber of Agriculture for businesses.

Mr. Mehbbob Ul Haq, Managing Director, SEDF highlighted the untapped opportunities in poultry sector of

Sindh and apprise the audience regarding establishment of breeder and hatchery unit. He further informed that

price of Day Old Chick (DOC) is highly effected, as DOC is currently purchased from Punjab. It is also the reason

of volatile availability of DOCs. Establishment of more such breeder farms and hatchery units will bring stability

in supply and prices of DOCs. He also informed about other agri sectors in which SEDF is willing to support

business growth, he encouraged business people to invest in Agri-sector of Sindh.

Furthermore, Mr. Abdul Bari Pitafi, Minister Livestock, Fisheries & Cooperative Department, Government of

Sindh and chief guest of the event, gave the final remarks. He mentioned certain impediments for businesses in

Sindh. The honorable minister also elaborated Government efforts in improving business environment. He further

said that, despite the fact that Sindh pioneered livestock farming, its breeds have fallen behind in the pecking

order. He further mentioned that milk production of Sindh’s breed and America’s breed was equal few decades

ago, American breed yields far better now, while Sindh’s breed was reduced its yield. He appreciated efforts of

SEDF, and emphasized on the need to further support business community in agriculture sector of Sindh.
