Basic idea behind SEA is “ To change the way we

    address email .”

SEA lets user send emails to a semantically specified

    group of recipients.

SEA was successfully implemented in the StanfordComputer Science Department . Now , SEA is put to use

throughout the Silicon Valley University’s campus.

Genesereth says , Semantic email addressing would“ grow virally.”

Some pre-requisitesQ ] Where is the information (data) for searching obtained from ?

Ans :Information is obtained from private databases for

Company or Organization and publically available in FOAF Files.

FOAF (Friend - of - a - friend) is used in Social Networking Sites

like (Orkut etc.) which describe personal details of people.

By collecting information from FOAF files, one can build Large

collection of data about people and their interests.

Security and Privacy• Small to medium-sized organizations tend to be

self-regulating with respect to rules due to socialpressures.

    • Within larger communities, security policies

may need to be enacted to limit who is allowed tosend to whom.

•On the public Internet, however, SEA abuse is

much harder to control. It is open field of research

    till today.

    DEALING WITH SPAM

In a sense, SEA is the opposite of spam. While both SEA

and spam may involve unsolicited emails, spam is sent to

everyone, while SEA is targeted towards those who have

publicly announced they are interested in it.

SEA is a marketer’s dream come true. Unlike mailing

lists, there is no discovery required for either the sender or the

    receiver. It just works.

Semantic email technology will go against spammers byfiltering messages based on who's sending them.

    Related Work Microsoft Exchange 2003

    - Query Based Distribution Groups- Mailing list can be created by an

administrator only, so do not allow full power of

    SEA

Information Lens (Malone et al. 1987)

    - It allowed users to send email messages filter

    those messages using production rules.

-An interesting feature - it allowed users to sendto a special mailbox called “Anyone”.

      -Receive messages based on production

    rules.

    The Bottom Line

Semantic Email Addressing is a simple idea.

Is already in use in a multinational organization

     Particularly useful in organizational/corporate

    settings.

Targeted nature of a SEA is powerful and could be

    used to combat unintentional spam.

SEA could be the “killer app’’ of the Semantic Web.
