Labor Department Warns New Yorkers About Online Employment Scams

Albany, NY (September 12, 2012) - Today State Labor Commissioner Colleen C. Gardner alerted all NewYorkers on the growing number of online employment scam promising high salaries for very little work.These solicitations are appearing on social media pages like Facebook and e-mail in boxes designed to luredesperate job seekers. The Labor Department was notified of this scam by several job seekers who use theLabor Department's Facebook page.

"In these difficult times, with so many New Yorkers desperately seeking employment, the idea of thesepredators targeting our vulnerable citizens is appalling," said Labor Commissioner Colleen C. Heating/Weatherization Technician$15.30/hr

RESIDENCY: Candidates must have been legal residents of Seneca County or one of the six contiguouscounties for one month preceding the date of the written test.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from High School or possession of a High School

Equivalency diploma, AND two (2) years of experience in heating systems repair and replacement. Thetwo years of experience shall consist of experience in forced hot air and hydronic systems.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ACCEPTANCE OF APPLICATIONS: Possession of a valid New

York State drivers license.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES (Illustrative only)

Perform the necessary duties to replace and repair heating systems to safety and code requirements. Thiswould include, but not be limited to:

1. Diagnose oil, gas, hydronic, and wood or coal systems for health, safety, efficiency and proper operations;

2. Identify necessary repairs or need for replacement and submit costs for parts and labor to complete the repairs orreplacement of that heating system;

3. Perform the necessary repairs and replacements after approval by supervisor.4. Clean and tune residential heating systems to maximize safety of client, and improve the efficiency of the heating

system. Complete and submit required paperwork to document the work done;5. Work with Heating sub-contractors and write up repair or replacement specs, oversee the work and inspect the

final completed sub-contractor work for state presentation;6. Work on and adjust other residential combustion appliances such as hot water heaters, cooking ovens and space

heaters:7. Be a part of and assist the Weatherization crew in weatherizing homes and other associated duties as required or

directed;
