Topics in Medical Sciences (TMS) (Basic Science Options)

Evaluations from students in past very positive – “some of the best courses I taken during my 4 years”.

Examples of courses: Anatomy for Surgeons Tropical Medicine and International Health Physiologic Foundations of the Kidney People and their problems (psychiatric issues, addictions) Applied Physiology – physiology in ICU settings ETC.

Page 8: Senior Clerkship for class 2010

TMS TMS courses count as elective time towards the

required 20 weeks. However, they do not count as a separate discipline

for the requirement of 3 different disciplines. If you do not notify us of an elective booked (for

March, 2010) by mid November, and will not have completed 20 weeks of elective by March, 2010 we will register you in TMS We will ask you for your choice of TMS course early in

December, 2009

Page 9: Senior Clerkship for class 2010

Options:Both July and Jan vacations can be switched with electives.

Core rotations cannot be switched with vacations or electives.

If you need to attend a conference during senior clerkship (such as IFMSA), consider selecting an elective during this time.

If you are interested in a research project, request the research sequence.

For those of you who wish to do Sequence 5 (research): we will give priority to those who have a research project at McGill planned. Submit to Nicole a confirmation letter from your supervisor, which includes his/her contact information and a brief description of the project.

US Students/ApplicantsInterviews for US programs are often held in December – if you are applying to the US, consider requesting an elective during this time.

Some US programs like to see USMLE Step 2 CK results as part of the application process

If you are applying to the US, look at the requirements for some of the programs you are interested in, and consider doing Step 2 CK by summer 2009.

If you are Canadian and wish to apply to a US program, remember that only some disciplines are eligible for support for J-1 visas.

Page 12: Senior Clerkship for class 2010

If you do not get your first choice sequence, or change your mind about your career choice after you have been assigned to a sequence, you can use your elective time to do relevant rotations.

Page 13: Senior Clerkship for class 2010

Please use electives to broaden your medical education – no matter how narrow the specialty you choose, you will be better at it if you have a solid background in general medicine.

Those of you choosing more generalist careers, you will be better at it if you develop some depth in specialized areas.

Reminder: your electives must be done in a minimum of three different disciplines To review electives and their corresponding parent

disciplines, please see: http://www.medicine.mcgill.ca/ugme/electives/electives_list_en.htm

Page 14: Senior Clerkship for class 2010

Register on line, with your choice of sequence, by Oct. 21st, 2008 midnight.

Registration opens as of Oct. 6th. Go to www. medicine.mcgill.ca, go to medical education, undergraduate, then curriculum, then Intro to Senior Clerkship, then senior clerkship form. http://www.medicine.mcgill.ca/ugme/curriculum/seniorclerk3_form_en.htm Please note: Go to Intro to Senior Clerkship NOT Senior Clerkship (Senior

Clerkship still has forms for the class of 2009)

All registrations received before Oct. 21st are treated equally.

Page 15: Senior Clerkship for class 2010

Surgical subspecialty Surgical subspecialty is not an elective. However, within certain constraints you may make

requests. We will do our best to accommodate requests, but

once assigned, you will not be able to trade. You will submit your request in January, 2009. You

will receive an email with information regarding how to submit your request.

Page 16: Senior Clerkship for class 2010

Other points Exam at the end of senior surgical subspecialty covers

all of surgery. It is a USMLE “Shelf Exam” similar to the medicine clerkship exam.

USMLE Step 2 CK OR MCCQE 1 (LMCC) must be passed to received your degree.

Students with core clerkship electives starting Jan 12, Feb 9, April 6, May 4, June 1 or June 29 (all 2009) may request to do geriatrics in their third year instead of 4th. Contact [email protected] and obtain written permission if you wish to do this.

You must have ACLS certification in order to graduate.

Page 17: Senior Clerkship for class 2010

Physicianship (Feb. 8 to March 5, 2010)

Mornings: Medicine and Society Afternoons: Public Health, Professionalism,

Communications Skills.

Page 18: Senior Clerkship for class 2010

Professionalism Section on Dean’s letter Reminder: If a category under physicianship is

noted as “not consistently” on more than one clinical rotation (ICM or clerkship) a notation will be made on the Dean’s letter. Any major incident would be noted even if it occurred

only once.

Comments from your Osler Fellow, on Physicianship 3, may be included.

Back up planAsk yourself the question: If I don’t match to

my field of choice in 2010, what do I want to do for the year?

If it is another field of medicine, do you look reasonably attractive to that field?

Remember – after you graduate, you cannot do electives as a medical student – only as a resident.
