Challenge:Is there any actual evidence to suggest that Transition
Year has a positive effect on Leaving Cert Results?
Peadar surveyed current TY participants and analysed Leaving Cert Results over a 6 year period
- 3 years pre TY- 3 years post TY

Timetable Changes & Rational
• Work Experience every Wednesday - opportunity to access
a variety of work experience
• Classes in English, Irish, Maths, MFL.
• Trebles in PE(including option to study LC PE) ; Activities
(Tourism; Life Skills; Young Scientist & Future Leader
Programme) and Electives (Chinese; Local Culture; Safe
Food and Music)
• 3 classes in 4 different option subjects.
• Option blocks will rotate mid-year - as a result students
will experience 8 of 18 option subjects.

● Every effort will be made to accommodate student preferences however○ a minimum number of students is required for option
subjects to be offered and ○ we are governed by a maximum number of students per
subject eg 24 for Science subjects, 20 for Home Economics and 30 for academic subjects.
● Completed Application Forms must be submitted by 4pm on Monday 26th February, 2018.

Student Supports
❑ Irish exemption - only with reports/certificate of exemption, career implications- updated report needed.
❑ Dropping a subject - only in extreme cases, career implications.
❑ Resource hours/Learning support - generally only given to those with reports and where there is availability.
❑ Stress and anxiety - report it to the school before too late - seek help at earliest opportunity.
❑ Reading at home - very important for students to have access to local and national newspapers, magazines, so that they can continue building word literacy. Big gap at this age.

Leaving Certificate Applied
❑ The Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA) is designed for those
students who do/do not wish to proceed directly to third
level education.
❑ It is designed to cater for the differing educational needs of
today’s students.
❑ The aim in the LCA programme is to prepare students for the
transition from the world of school to that of adult and working
life.
Course Content
The course is a self contained two year programme that requires
students to participate in three main areas.
1.Vocational Preparation & Guidance: (preparing for interviews,
job search, mini companies, pay, tax, etc.)
2.Vocational Education: (mathematics, IT, hotel catering and
tourism, graphics and construction, sport and recreation etc.)
3.General education: (gaeilge, french, science, english, music
etc.)
❑ It also involves Work Experience every Wednesday
An Overview
❑ Credits awarded for modules and tasks at the end of each session.
❑ 90% Attendance.
❑ An interview for six tasks.
❑ 200 credits over the 2 years. (divided into 4 sessions)
