your student know what is right for them.

❑ Do recommend TY as an opportunity to grow and explore.

However you have to want to do TY - ‘you get out of it what

you put it to it.’

non-participants

❑ A difference of TWO grade points per subject

❑ A net benefit of 26 CAO points

❑ TY seen as positively affecting academic

performance, irrespective of school factors or

the academic ability of the student

Challenge:Is there any actual evidence to suggest that Transition

Year has a positive effect on Leaving Cert Results?

Peadar surveyed current TY participants and analysed Leaving Cert Results over a 6 year period

- 3 years pre TY- 3 years post TY

Peadar’s Findings – Leaving Cert Results

❑ 15 subjects analysed at Higher

Level

❑ Increase in As & Bs in 9

subjects

❑ 1 subject remained unchanged

❑ 5 subjects showed a decline in

reduction can be accounted

for by the increase in

student numbers taking HL)

❑ 4 subjects analysed at

Ordinary Level

❑ As & Bs rose in Irish & Maths

❑ As & Bs fell in English &

French (more students taking

these subjects at HL)

❑ TY facilitates uptake in subjects for LC not previously

studied at JC
