Today, the world has come underenvironmental degradation due to many humanactivities such as excessive exploitation ofnatural resources and indiscriminate discardingof hazardous wastes and sewage.

World population is growing day by day,calling for increasing supply of safe water.Similarly, demand of water for the people,factories, farmlands and other enterprises is onthe increase. So, the government is seekingmore ways apart from constructing dams tomeet the nation’s demands of irrigation waterand potable water.

So, it is required to utilize and conservewater sources systematically. In particular,factories near rivers and creeks have to treatsewage and hazardous chemicals beforethrowing them away. Waste water fromdistilleries, leather factories, peas mills, coldstorages, prawn processing plants, textile plants,fish sauce factories, soft drink factories andchemical factories contains harmful chemicalagents.

Water in a river or creek contaminatedwith such chemical agents is fatal to aquaticcreatures in it and harmful to the health of thosewho use that water. Indiscriminately throwingaway untreated sewage to water sources, settingup latrines on banks of rivers and creeks andtaking bath and washing clothes on edges ofrivers and creeks are some causes of waterpollution.

Household waste is also consisted ofperishable chemical agents, and that causeswater pollution if it is thrown away to watersources.

Water pollution, air pollution, soilpollution and deforestation lead toenvironmental deterioration. Therefore, theentire people have to do their bit inenvironmental conservation tasks for the betterworld.

WASHINGTON, 22 Feb—An American held on murdercharges in Pakistan after a shooting worked as a CIAcontractor but was not involved in covert operations,US sources closely following the case said on Monday.

Deepwater Horizon gulf oil spill hada “devastating” effect on life on theseafloor that could need years torecover, a US marine scientist says.

Samantha Joye of the Universityof Georgia says studies using asubmersible discovered a layer of deadanimals and oil in the Gulf of Mexicoas thick as 4 inches in some places,the BBC reported Monday.

ATHENS, 22 Feb— A statin drug — brand-name Lipitor —may help prevent blindness in people with diabetes, researchersat the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy say. Leadauthor Azza El-Remessy and colleagues say diabetic retinopathyis a leading cause of blindness in adults who have had diabetesfor 10 to 15 years, and there are no government-approved oraltreatments. women who have cardiovascular issues, such ashigh cholesterol and high blood pressure, may notonly be at risk for heart disease, but for an increasedrisk of developing early cognitive and memoryproblems as well, according to a study releasedMonday.

For the study, 3,486 men and 1,341 women withan average age of 55 underwent cognitive tests threetimes over 10 years. The tests measured reasoning,memory, fluency and vocabulary. Participantsreceived a Framingham risk score that is used topredict 10-year risk of a cardiovascular event. It isbased on age, sex, HDL cholesterol, total cholesterol,systolic blood pressure and whether they smoked orhad diabetes. The study found people who hadhigher cardiovascular risk were more likely to havelower cognitive function and a faster rate of overallcognitive decline compared to those with the lowestrisk of heart disease. A 10-percent highercardiovascular risk was associated with poorercognitive test scores in all areas except reasoning formen and fluency for women. For example, a 10percent higher cardiovascular risk was associatedwith a 2.8 percent lower score in the test of memoryfor men and a 7.1 percent lower score in the memorytest for women.—Xinhua

beef surged a whopping 97 percent in 2010 comparedwith the year earlier, the Ministry for Food,Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said Tuesday.The ministry said the country imported 125,681 tonsof beef from the United States last year, up 97percent from 63,817 tallied in 2009. The figurestands at 63 percent of the record 199, 409 tons of USbeef imported in 2003 before South Korea bannedUS beef imports due to concerns over mad cowdisease.

The ministry, which based its findings on dataprovided by the US Department of Agriculture, alsosaid South Korea was the fourth-largest importer ofUS beef, after Mexico, Canada, and Japan. US porkimports, however, fell 14.7 percent last year. SouthKorea bought 99,901 tons of pork from the US lastyear, down from 117,157 tons reported in the yearearlier, the ministry said.—Xinhua
