Thisdocumentoutlinesthestandardtimelineforhonorsstudentscompletingtheseniorhonorsprojectinaccounting,business,economics,informationsystems,orsportmanagementandisdesignedforstudentswhoarepursuingafour-yearcourseofstudy.StudentsfollowingnonstandardgraduationtimelinesareexpectedtoconsultwiththeHonorsDirectorabouthowthistimelinecanbeadaptedtofittheircircumstances.SENIORYEAR:FALLSEMESTERStudentsmustbeenrolledinHP470(2credits).Aninitialgradeof“P”(pass)willbegivenuponcompletionofthiscourseinDecember.Thefinalgradeforthiscoursewillbedeterminedattheendofthespringsemesteronthebasisofanoverallevaluationofthecompetedproject.Atthattime,thegradeforHP470willbechangedtomatchthegradereceivedforthespring-semestercourse(HP471).I. InitialProgressReport

• Anabstractorexecutivesummaryoftheprojectofnomorethan200words• Afullroughdraft(20–25pages)oftheproject,intermpaperform.

Ø Theprojectmentormustalsosenda“letterofconfidence”toDr.SarahScott([email protected])indicating(1)thatthequantityoftheworkcompletedthusfarissatisfactoryand(2)thattheprojectshowssufficientpromiseatthisstagetowarrantanexpectationthatthestudentwillproduceafinalprojectworthyofpublicpresentationattheSPARCFestival.

III. FinalPaperSubmission

ThefinalpapermustbeuploadedtoCanvasin.pdfformatby4:00p.m.onSunday,May10,2020.Besuretoemailyourfinalpapertoyourprojectmentor.

Papersreceivedafterthedeadlinewillbeconsideredlate.Latepaperswillbeassessedapenaltyofa10%gradededuction.

Thisdocumentoutlinesthestandardtimelineforhonorsstudentscompletingtheseniorhonorsprojectinthevisualorperformingartsandisdesignedforstudentswhoarepursuingafour-yearcourseofstudy.StudentsfollowingnonstandardgraduationtimelinesareexpectedtoconsultwiththeHonorsDirectorabouthowthistimelinecanbeadaptedtofittheircircumstances.SENIORYEAR:FALLSEMESTERStudentsmustbeenrolledinHP470(2credits).Aninitialgradeof“P”(pass)willbegivenuponcompletionofthiscourseinDecember.Thefinalgradeforthiscoursewillbedeterminedattheendofthespringsemesteronthebasisofanoverallevaluationofthecompetedproject.Atthattime,thegradeforHP470willbechangedtomatchthegradereceivedforthespring-semestercourse(HP471).I. AninitialprogressreportshouldbeuploadedtoCanvasbyOctober1.Theprojectmentormustbegivenacopy.

Thereportmustbeatleastfivepagesinlengthandshouldincludethefollowingelements:• Projecttitle• Abstractorsummaryoftheproject• Tentativeintroductiontothepaperorelaborationoftheprojectbasedonthe

progressofsummerresearchorotherpreparatorywork.(2pageminimum)• Detailedplanofaction(inoutlineform),includingdates• Inthecaseofresearch-basedprojects,aliteraturereview(2pageminimum).Note:

Thisisnotsimplyabibliographicallistingbutshouldcontainsomediscussionofindividualsources,includinganindicationoftheirusefulnessfortheproject.(SeeaccompanyingVPAprojectguidelines.)

• Anexplanationofthepreciserelationbetweenthehonorsprojectandtheseniorprojectforthemajordetailingwhichworkisintendedtocounttowardthehonorsprojectandwhichtowardtheseniorcapstoneproject(7creditsintotal).

TheprogressreportwillbereviewedandevaluatedbytheHonorsCommitteeaccordingtothefollowingcriteria:

GreenLight:Inthejudgmentofthecommittee,theprojectisviableandconsistentwiththemissionoftheuniversity;alltherequiredelementsforthereportarepresentinadequateform.Workmayproceedontheproject.

YellowLight:Thismeansthatthecommitteehasconcernsabouttheprojectdescribedinthereportwhilestillfindingittobeviable,orthatone(ormore)oftherequiredelementsismissingorisinadequateinsomeway.Studentsreceivingayellowlightwillbegiventheopportunitytosubmitarevisedversionofthereport.ApprovalmustbereceivedfromtheHonorsCommitteebeforethefinalprogressreportcanbesubmitted.

ImportantNote:IfyoudecideduringthefallsemesternottocompleteyourhonorsprojectandtoexittheHonorsProgram,youmustwithdrawfromHP470bythewithdrawaldeadline.Failuretowithdrawbythisdatewillresultinagradeof“F”forHP470.

II. FinalProgressReport(RoughDraft)

AfinalprogressreportshouldbesubmittedtoCanvasbyDecember15.Besuretoemailthefinalprogressreporttoyourprojectmentor.

Thereportshouldbearrangedintwosections:• Anabstractorexecutivesummaryoftheprojectofnomorethan200words• Inthecaseofresearch-basedprojects,afullroughdraft(20–25pages)oftheproject,in

termpaperform.(SeeaccompanyingVPAprojectguidelines.)• Inthecaseofcreativeorapplied-artsprojects,adraftofthereflectionessay(5–10

pages),aswellasphotographsofworksamplesorrecordingsofperformanceexcerpts.

Ø Theprojectmentormustalsosenda“letterofconfidence”toDr.SarahScott([email protected])indicating(1)thatthequantityoftheworkcompletedthusfarissatisfactoryand(2)thattheprojectshowssufficientpromiseatthisstagetowarrantanexpectationthatthestudentwillproduceafinalprojectworthyofpublicpresentationattheSPARCFestival.

Thefinalprogressreportandmentor’sletterwillbereviewedbytheHonorsCommittee,whichwilldeterminewhethertheprojectshouldproceedtothefinalstage.ThereportwillbeevaluatedbytheHonorsCommitteeaccordingtothefollowingcriteria:

GreenLight:ThecommitteebelievestheprojectcanbebroughttoasuccessfulconclusionintimeforpublicpresentationtotheuniversitycommunityatSPARC.

YellowLight:ThecommitteehasconcernsabouttheprojectasdescribedinthereportwhilestillbelievingthatitcanbebroughttoasuccessfulconclusionintimeforpublicpresentationatSPARC.Ayellowlightwillalsobegivenifarequiredelementismissingorinadequate.Studentsreceivingayellowlightwillbegiventheopportunitytosubmitarevisedversionofthereport.ApprovalmustbereceivedfromtheHonorsCommitteebeforetheprojectcanproceedtothefinalstage.

RedLight:Inthejudgmentofthecommittee,theprojectaspresentedinthereportcannotreasonablybeexpectedtobecompletedsuccessfullyintimeforpublicpresentationatSPARC.Workshouldnotproceedontheproject;thestudentmustwithdrawfromthehonorsprojectandexittheHonorsProgram.

SENIORYEAR:SPRINGSEMESTERStudentsmustbeenrolledinHP471(2credits)duringthespringsemester.Thegradeforthiscoursewillbebasedonthementor’sevaluationofthecompletedproject(75%)andanevaluationofthepublicpresentation(25%);thelatterevaluationwillbedividedequallybetweenthementorandamemberoftheHonorsCommittee.ThefinalgradeassignedtoHP471willalsobeassignedretroactivelytoHP470,asdescribedabove.

Duringthistime,allseniorhonorsstudentswillpresenttheirprojectstotheMountcommunity.Presentationsshouldlastroughly25minutes,followedbyafive-minutequestionandanswerperiod.Apodium,projector,computer,andscreenwillbeavailable.

III. FinalPaperSubmission

ThefinalpapermustbeuploadedtoCanvasin.pdfformatby4:00p.m.onSunday,May10,2020.Besuretoemailyourfinalpapertoyourprojectmentor.

Papersreceivedafterthedeadlinewillbeconsideredlate.Latepaperswillbeassessedapenaltyofa10%gradededuction.

IV. SeniorHonorsBanquet

AttheSeniorHonorsBanquet,wewillcelebrateyoursuccess!GraduatingseniorswillreceivecertificatesandmedalsforcompletingtheHonorsProgram.Detailsaboutthedateandtimeofthebanquetwillbeannouncedasthedateapproaches.
