Daytime naps can affect how you sleep at night. But if you are taking short afternoon naps and still sleeping well at night, it’s fine to keep doing this. Just remember it all contributes to your daily sleep requirements.

Try to go to bed at the same time each night and wind down in the hour before bed. Taking a warm bath or reading can be beneficial.

Caffeine should be avoided for at least four hours before going to bed and alcohol can also make it difficult to stay asleep. Stimulating activities such as exercise, computer games and television should be avoided in the hour before going to sleep.

Warmth is also important – both thetemperature of the room and having enough blankets.

the requirement for sleep is the same. There are many things you should,

and should not, do to ensure you get a good night’s sleep.

Comfort in the bedroom is paramount, and the most important item is a good-quality mattress.

We spend up to one third of our livesasleep, and getting enough is important for physical and mental health. But how much is enough?

Individuals vary in their sleep needs, but most adults generally require 7-9 hours every night to feel properly refreshed and able to function their best the next day. Contrary to popular belief, this remains similar beyond the age of 65; older adults often spend more time in bed than younger adults, but usually

At the end of her life, Australian author, historianand ecologist Jackie French

(pictured) is aiming to look plain old worn out.

“When I’m in my coffin, I don’t want any smooth, unused bits,” she says with a smile in her voice. “I want everything to be worn out.”

It’s a fitting attitude from the author of 200 books and winner of

more than 60 literary awards, who does not believe in retirement.

French has seen too many peopledo the world trip – or, as she puts it, ‘the cruise up the Danube’ – and then come back and wonder what to do.

On the other hand, she has also seen friends turn their attention to study and find lasting value.

One friend, for example, has takenup a long-held wish to study astronomy, with huge satisfaction.

“We are all living so much longer now, there is time for a second career,” French says. “It used to be that at 60 you were old, at 65 you retired and then you died. Now, we can have another 30 years to go, and it is a great chance to take on the career you couldn’t do when you wereyoung because you were tied down with mortgages and family.”

French is one who walks her talk. She is still writing and releasing her

award-winning books and working. For more than 40 years she has

lived at the top of the gorge in the Araluen Valley. Her short biography reveals she has built a house and power system, planted thousands of trees and studied 400 wombats.

Some of Jackie’s books have soldmillions of copies and won more than 60 awards in Australia and internationally. Others, she writes, have been eaten by the wombats.

Treat retirement like an adventure

well as items such as chips and chocolate, are usually high in saturated fat and may also contain dangerous trans fats.

Instead, consider fresh fruit with low fat yoghurt asa sweet treat, and choose wholegrain or oat-based options for crumbles or cakes.

A good diet also goes a long way towards achievinga balanced lifestyle. It helps to maintain a healthy weight, which places less stress on weight-bearing joints such as hips, knees and ankles, further aiding activity.

And always be sure to follow food safety guidelinesas foodborne illnesses can be particularly severe in older people.

For more advice on achieving a healthy diet, discuss your individual nutritional needs with your GP or an accredited practising dietitian.

Sticking to a diet high in nutrients andwide in variety is the best bet for maintaining strength, health and

vitality as you age.In fact, while a healthy diet is crucial at any stage of

life, it becomes particularly so the older we get. While the amount of nutrients required is similar to

that of other adults, older people often need fewer kilojoules as activity decreases.

For this reason, consideration needs to be given tomeals to ensure they are high in nutrients without being too energy dense.

Enjoying a wide variety of nutritious foods from the five food groups every day is important in maintaining a balanced food intake.

There are, of course, some key elements of any diet to be aware of.

Calcium is an important nutrient that is essential for good bone health. Along with fluoride, vitamin D

and exercise, it is essentialin protecting againstosteoporosis, whichcommonly affects olderpeople.

Milk and milk productssuch as yoghurt and cheeseare high in calcium, as arefish with soft edible bones, such as tinned salmon andsardines.

The Australian DietaryGuidelines recommend fourserves of dairy a day forwomen aged over 50, whilemen aged from 50-70should consume two-and-a-half serves and those agedover 70 should have three-

and-a-half serves of dairy on a daily basisDrinking enough water is also key to a healthy diet.

Water supports many of the body’s vital functions, including hydration, digestion and blood volume.

It also helps to prevent constipation, particularlywhen combined with a high fibre intake. Wholegrain cereals, wholemeal bread, fresh and dried fruit, dried peas, beans and lentils are all good sources of fibre.

There are also, of course, foods to avoid or limit. Too much salt can increase the risk of high blood pressure and heart disease. As such, older adults should restrict their intake of high salt foods and always choose reduced-salt products.

Consider flavouring meals with herbs and spices, instead of adding salt.

Likewise, saturated fats should only be eaten veryoccasionally. Pastries, fried and battered foods, as

Herbs and spices bring out the flavour in salmon while yoghurt with muesli and chia seeds (inset) makes a great breakfast.

A good diet uses the five food groups.

Want to know a secret? Ahappy retirement is asmuch about keeping

your brain in good health as it is about the body.

“It’s human nature to take what you’vegot for granted, and only when it’s lost do we appreciate it,” says Brainpower Training managing director Nina Sunday.

The good news is, you don’t need to be a sudoku whiz to reap the benefits of a healthy mind. Read on for our top tips for keeping your ol’ grey matter in the black.

Do something new“For a garden to grow, you have to water it, and it’s the same with your brain,” says Sunday. A lazy brain does the same thing day after day, whereas challenging your brain with new and different activities builds new neural pathways and strengthens existing connections, allowing it to store and retrieve information more easily. Try swapping the hand you brush your teeth with or changing your route to work to give the brain a much-needed workout.

Move moreA healthy body helps ensure a healthy mind. “The more you move, the better your brain is,” says Sunday. Numerous studies show regular exercise increases brain function by stimulating the formation of new cells in the hippocampus – the area of the brain vital to memory and learning – and can also reduce your risk of cognitive decline and dementia. As they say, move it or lose it.

Get enough sleepEver been told to sleep on something? Well it’s right. Not only does sleep deprivation stop you learning efficiently, sleep has also been shown to be crucial in memory consolidation. But how much is enough? A 2014 Harvard University study found those who both underslept and overslept performed worse on memory tests than those who received seven to eight hours’ sleep. So go to bed if you’re serious about keeping in tiptop condition.

Just dance!Whether you salsa, tango or plie at ballet, there are few better brain-boosters than busting a move. Rather than simply using one part of the brain, dancing requires you to use many simultaneously, such as the areas responsible for co-ordination, planning and judgment, along with having to synchronise your movements with the beat. Turn up the music!

Laugh out loudIf you’ve ever needed proof a hilarious

engaging with people is the secret to staying healthy.

Read a bookIf the only thing you’re reading these days is the news headlines, it’s time to slow down. “Reading these days has been replaced by referencing,” says Sunday, who explains constantly flipping from link to link online never allows your brain to focus on one topic. “Reading a book lets you fully explore an idea and gives the brain cells a chance to connect at a deeper level,” she says. Whether you choose Kindle or print, read a book and save your brain.

MeditateThe effects of meditation on stress relief are well documented, but did you know meditation can also improve memory? In one recent study, the brains of 16 volunteers were scanned before and after an eight-week mindfulness course, with the later scans showing significant growth in parts of the brain associated with learning and memory, self-awareness and empathy. That’s definitely another reason to build some quiet time into your day as often as possible.

Tips to boost the brainMental health is key to wellbeing

can even help to stave off Alzheimer’s and dementia. A study at Toronto’s York University found those people who are fluent in more than one language may delay the onset of symptoms of these conditions by up to four years.

Meet a mateVisit a friend, join a club, or volunteer – whatever it takes to get you out of the house, as those with the most active social lives also have the slowest rate of mental decline, according to a Harvard School of Public Health study that focused on individuals in their 50s and 60s. It doesn’t matter whether the interaction is with family members, friends, a volunteer organisation or an interest group – just getting out there and

session of Monty Python or Blackadder can be good for you, this is it. A study at Loma Linda University in California found the anticipation of laughter can reduce stress hormones by up to 70 per cent, while listening to jokes activates the creativity and learning areas of the brain. Not laughing yet? Try laughter yoga or fireup YouTube to get your share of LOL videos involving everything from cats to babies.

Learn a new languageA second language is the superpower of the brain-boosting world, improving memory and attention, making you betterat multi-tasking and even expanding your first language skills by making you more conscious of vocabulary and grammar. It

Brush up on computer skillsCOMPUTERS are becoming more important, not less, so if you can’t – or won’t – operate them, you’re at a big disadvantage. “An inability to operate a computer is the new disability; it’s almost the same as being illiterate,” says Brainpower Training managing

director Nina Sunday. If you’re serious about engaging with your community and enjoying retirement to the full, you’ll need to use them, so head to your local community centre or ask a friend or family member for a lesson or two.

Tips to boost the brainAre you aiming to idle away your retirement years or

make every day count? Don’t really see yourself as agrey nomad?

Tasmania has some of the finest waterways in Australia, so why not explore them from the deck of your own boat? We're talking a real boat, with all the comforts of home, such as the renowned Jeanneau sail or power craft. Jeanneaus can be found in every harbour of the world, and are a popular choice among the cruising fraternity. With performance, quality build and easy handling, a Jeanneau is well within the capabilities of a senior couple. Queensland coast, here we come!

Is one of you a bit past sailing? Maybe not as nimble as you’d like? After something more substantial? The Integrity range of powerboats is descended from a long line of seaworthy, trawler-style hulls. From the solid rails on the duckboard, to the walk around decks and single-level living space, these boats suit even the most mobility-challenged. With comfort levels similar to your average home unit, you can live aboard as long as you like. Why not skip the gardening, lose the power bills, and move aboard permanently?

You also want to leave a bit of your hard-earned to the kids, don’t you? Here’s how: buy new. New boat, new systems, minimal maintenance and replacement costs compared with buying pre-loved. Reputable brands hold their value, so you get all the benefits of a boat that is truly yours – your own choices of decor, instrumentation and options – plus a high percentage of your money back when you sell. A favourable exchange rate means this is an excellent time to buy new.

Paul Nanscawen from Boat Sales Tasmania has noticed a rise in salesto retirees who want their senior years rich in lifestyle and shared experiences, and realise the time to act is now. Why not give him a call?

Rema Jago loved nothingbetter than sitting in hergarden enjoying nature

and listening to the birds. But at 85, a mild stroke and increasing arthritis had spelled an end to these small pleasures.

Turn the clock forward six years, and enter Jenna Davie, an accredited exercise physiologist from Care Forward’s Launceston office. Mrs Jago had been referred to Care Forward for a Home Independence Program.

She recalls: “Beginning with simpleexercises and progressing to more difficult ones, my mobility has improved dramatically.

“Although I still use my walker I have learned to stride instead of ‘tottering’. I can get in and out of bed … and even go down two steps to get to the sun porch, where I can now sit to enjoy reading the paper, which I

haven’t been able to do in over five years.”

Jenna remembers the first day MrsJago went down the stairs: “I actually experienced a life changing moment … After she got down, she sat in her sun room looking over a nature reserve and cried with happiness (I cried too).”

Mrs Jago is one of many Tasmanians to benefit from a Home Independence Program delivered by the locally owned and operated firm.

Care Forward employs nurses andother allied health professionals to provide similar services and programs across the state, focusing on working with you to regain lost abilities or learn new skills that can help you maintain your independence at home.

Find the right hike for any ageThere comes a time when all good backpackers

need to lighten their load. Even hardcore devotees will recognise there comes a time

when downsizing is inevitable. But, rather than closing the gate on outdoor

adventures, trading a large-capacity rucksack for a smaller version can open up a variety of opportunities, especially in Tasmania.

The change of regimen provides a fresh and even welcome approach to staying fit and healthy and, at the same time, allows for the renewal of a connection with our diverse and magnificent backyard.

There are numerous day walks and wilderness experiences to be enjoyed in the state’s national parks and reserves, without the burden of bulky necessities for overnight camping.

Of varying grades and distances, the tracks are withineasy reach of population centres and cover a range of terrain right across the state – from gentle forest strolls and seaside rambles to more challenging mountain and clifftop paths.

Walk for half an hour, half a day or even from dawn todusk and discover natural attractions ranging from glacial lakes and tall trees through to elements of Aboriginal

culture, waterfalls, seascapes, history and wildlife. Most hikes listed in the Parks and Wildlife Service

(PWS) brochure 60 Great Short Walks can be accessed from the state's major roads, but there are exciting destinations beyond the bitumen for adventurous daypackers.

Maria Island is a 30-minute crossing from Triabunnaon the new year-round ferry service called Encounter Maria Island.

A day trip is an ideal opportunity to get up close andpersonal with the local wildlife – forester kangaroos, pademelons and wombats. Twitchers will be impressed by the stunning variety of birds, including the rare forty spotted pardalote.

The settlement of Darlington with its World Heritage-listed convict probation station also reflects the island’s more recent history of wine, silk, timber, fishing and cement industries. Wander around Darlington and imagine when it was a bustling township with a school, shops and a population of more than 250 people. Stride out and walk to the Fossil Cliffs or south to the magical Painted Cliffs.

Further afield is Melaleuca in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. This remote and

beautiful place is only a one-hour flight from Hobart with Par Avion.

Explore the area on foot and visit the Deny King birdhide to catch a glimpse of an endangered orange-bellied parrot. Share the stories of the traditional owners on the 1.2km Needwonnee Walk, a boardwalk that weaves throughout the forest and buttongrass plains beside Melaleuca Lagoon.

There is also an opportunity on this day trip to exploreBathurst Harbour and Port Davey.

For those who can still manage a middle-weight pack, the Three Capes Track in the Tasman National Park has some creature comforts. The overnight cabins have bunks with mattresses, heating, USB charge stations, gas cooktops, basic cookware and running water.

Much of the dry boot track is boardwalk, and nearly half the walkers on the Three Capes Track are aged between 51 and 70. It is popular with families, particularly with seniors escorting grandchildren.

It has been very noticeable at MillingtonsFuneral Services during the last five or six years that there has been a dramatic

increase in people making arrangements for their own funeral.

Generally, people fix the price of a funeral by paying in full or paying an initial deposit then paying the remainder off over three years via Centapay or monthly direct debit. Occasionally, no payment is made and people just want to record their wishes.

On having discussions with this group to find out their motivation, the answers are varied. Generally it is discovered that it will quite simply be easier if they choose the funeral options so there is no discussion or

debate among family members on where the service is going to be held, what style of coffin is to be used, and even the content of the death notice. This notice can sometimes be challenging to write where there are extended families involved.

When we meet with families to arrange a funeral, they are greatly relieved when they see the arrangements have been done. The point is always made to the funeral director about “how terrific it was for Mum to have had the foresight to do that”.

We will continue to provide a service to our clientsby meeting them in their own home or our office to provide an obligation-free quote or just to have a chat to enable them to be more informed regarding all the options available.

Music to the earsThe award-winning

Tasmanian SymphonyOrchestra (TSO) enjoys

national and international prestige.

The TSO performs more than 80 concerts annually, including seasons in Hobart and Launceston, as well as appearances in Tasmanian regional centres.

Based in Federation Concert Hall, close to the Hobart waterfront, the TSO offers concerts that are varied and entertaining.

Among the artists who will appear with the orchestra this year are stunning violinist Karen Gomyo, performing Bruch’s ever-popular Violin

Concerto No 1, soprano Sara Macliver singing dazzling arias by Handel, and the father-and-son team of Howard and Alexander Shelley performing the complete piano concertos of Rachmaninov in two concerts in July.

For a gala night out, look no furtherthan the concert performance of

Carmen, featuring an all-star cast, on August 12. Russian mezzo-soprano Elena Maximova, who has sung the role of Carmen to acclaim around the world, will be joined by Teddy Tahu Rhodes and Argentinian tenor Marcelo Puente.

If movie soundtracks are your cup oftea, don’t miss Sounds of the Silver Screen on September 7, with music from Star Wars, Pirates of the Caribbean, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and many more.

You can put your Seniors Card to work at the TSO Matinee Series and Family Classics concerts.

As the name suggests, Matinee Series concerts are held in the afternoon, a perfect time to hear an

orchestra. Tickets for Seniors Card holders start at $32.

Family Classics concerts are in the early evening and are popular with children of all ages. Looking for an outing with grandchildren? Look no further. Music and storytelling come together in Sir Scallywag and the Golden Underpants, and The Snowman, on May 16 and August 24. Ticket prices for Seniors Card holders are $26 and $10 for children.

Full details of all TSO concerts are inthe 2017 season brochure. Get a copy from the TSO box office, download it at tso.com.au or call the box office on 1800 001 190 to have one mailed. All 2017 tickets are currently for sale.

Waxing lyricalGet expert help with hearing

Why should we worryabout ear wax? Mostof the time, we do not

need to.Ear wax is a naturally occurring

substance in our ears that protects and lubricates the ear canal.

But for up to 15,000 Tasmanian residents, ear wax can build up to the point of leading to unwanted symptoms such as loss of hearing, ringing in the ears, a feeling of fullness, itching and pain.

For those wearing hearing aids, a wax build-up in the ear canal can cause the aid not to seal properly or lead to whistling noises from feedback.

A reduction in the intensity of soundreaching the ear drum can result.

There are also studies showing thathearing loss can lead to cognitive decline, something we all worry about as we age.

Earworx, an AHPRA-regulated service that proudly employs only staff who are qualified in the process, uses dry and gentle micro suction to remove built-up wax.

The first dedicated wax removal clinic of its kind in Hobart, the technique used by Earworx was endorsed by the AMA Tasmania last year, and was previously only available through ear, nose and throat surgeons’

rooms. “Where the use of

softening drops at homedoes not effectivelyremove wax, or where adry technique is preferred,we can help,” says directorand founder LisaHellwege.

“We work alongsidegeneral practitioners,

audiologists and the general public to provide a safe and effective service.

“The key to this for us is a focus onqualified staff, evidence-based practice,

and the provision of a high-quality service.”

And what about the best expert recommendation Ms Hellwege can Earworx’s Lisa Hellwege.

enables the Archdiocese of Hobart to thank you for your gift, in your lifetime.

After you have looked after your loved ones, a gift in your will is a

significant way for your legacy to live on into the future.

be transformational in the lives of Tasmanians, contact Kalli McCarthy on 6208 6230 or send an email to [email protected].

Launceston Parish priest Fr Mark Freeman and (inset) Richmond Parish priest Fr Terry Rush embody the Catholic Church’s culture and spirit.

The Catholic Archdiocese ofHobart improves the livesof thousands of people

across Tasmania every day through the good works of its organisations.

Catholic Church agencies operate with a distinctive culture of care, inspired by the example of Jesus Christ, and guided by the church’s teachings.

Exponential growth in the deliveryof services has occurred in recent years, spurred on by the decision of governments to entrust the provision of social programs and services to Tasmanian Catholic agencies.

The involvement of the church in these areas is done out of a fundamental concern for the poor, marginalised, and those at risk in the community.

The church seeks to offer not only the delivery of social services and spiritual nourishment but, importantly, to approach people in a particular way.

The church teaches that every human being is precious, and that people are more important than material possessions. This gives the Catholic Church and its agencies their distinguishing culture and spirit.

Ever since the arrival of Hobart’s firstBishop, Robert Willson, in Tasmania in 1844, philanthropic gifts have played a vital role in supporting the ministry of the Catholic Church.

A bequest to the Archdiocese of Hobart will contribute to the continuation and delivery of programs and services to Tasmanians, and bequestors are invited to join the Archdiocesan recognition program named in honour of Bishop Robert Willson.

• Ease into retirement – if you would like to reduceyour working hours but continue to earn the same, this strategy can allow you to ease into retirement without reducing your post-tax income.

A TTR strategy can have benefits if you are gettingclose to retirement, but it may also have superannuation, tax and social security implications. To find out whether a TTR strategy may suit you, contact Simon Ashman from Strategic Financial Planning on 6220 8330 or visit strategicfp.com.au. We can help you plan a smooth transition to retirement. This article has information that is general in nature. It does not take into account the objectives, financial situation or needs of any particular person. You need to consider your financial situation and needs before making decisions based on this information. Strategic’s Simon Ashman.

you can earn the same after-tax income but contribute more to your super than you would without a TTR strategy.

2) Reduce work hours and soften the drop in income: If you decide to work fewer hours, you can start a TTR pension, which will allow you to earn the same after-tax income as working your full-time hours.

Some of the benefits of using this strategy include:• Boost your super balance – your super will

continue to grow as your employer continues to make compulsory contributions on your behalf. Salary sacrificing some of your pre-tax income will further increase your super savings;

• Pay less tax – employer and salary sacrifice contributions into your superannuation are taxed at a low rate and, once you turn 60, you won’t pay any tax on your pension income; and

As we near retirement age, we want tomake sure the transition from full-time work to full-time retiree is

smooth and gradual. Historically, the transition was rather abrupt – full-

time work one day and nothing the next. These days, however, more and more people are moving to part-time or contractual work in the lead-up to retirement to ease themselves into it.

The good news is that by setting up a transition toretirement pension (TTR) in the few years prior, you can start to draw an income from your retirement nest egg while continuing to work, and contribute to your super. There are two ways to use a TTR pension:

1) Keep working full-time and boost super: By increasing your salary sacrifice contributions to super, and supplementing your income with a TTR pension,
