Newstalk ZBA day visit to Auckland’s

radio station

The senior school’s radio

presenters were going on a trip

to visit the radio station,

Newstalk ZB.

The trip into the city was fun and we

managed to overtake the train

going in from Papakura.

We arrived a little early and had

time for a photo shoot outside the

station.

“Look at all the famous people. Is

that Dora the Explore!” exclaimed

Caci.

Niva Retimanu was so kind to take

us on our tour of the radio stations.

First we went to visit the

place where they

record adverts, a voice

over called John King.

He had the coolest job

in the radio department

(apart from the talking

bit). He asked Mrs

Dunbar to talk into the

microphone with a

script she had to read.

That was cool because

he made her voice

sound like a chipmunk

then a star wars

character.(Tyson reading an advert)

Then it was Tyson’s

turn and he

sounded even

more funny. I think

it is sort of hard

because first you

have to know

what buttons to

push to transform

the voice.

John must have a

tricky and

fantastic job at

the radio station

advert

department .

Next we went to see

Glenn. He is one of the

DJ’s who gets

calls for all the

competitions for

ZM. He got three

callers ready.

The callers had to

answer a question

about Twilight to

go into a draw to

go to L.A. Cool!

Then we got a big

bag of lolly pops

and ZM stickers.

Thanks Glenn!

Soon, we were off to see Josh. This was the third

place we went to.

Josh was so cool. He

showed us his part of

the radio station. He was in charge of

playing all the music

so people can listen

to them. Josh put

some sounds on. Josh only likes to play hip

hop and RnB music.

We had a great time

here!

We got to see where all the advertising jingles

were written and where all the radio presenter

lines were made.

Then it was time to see

Hayden, the producer.Niva took us into a

room where a man

works, his name

was Hayden.

Hayden’s job is to

produce people

when they are on

the radio. He has

to make sure that

everyone works

together on time.

He doesn’t do his

job alone, other

people help.

Soon it was time to see Andrew.Next we went to the

big room where we

found Andrew. We

learnt that when you

call the radio station

you get put on hold

while listening to the

music. But you get

connected to another

line and another

person when the

speaker is ready for

them. There was lots of

competitions and lots of computers.

After this we went to traffic

and control.We went into

traffic and met a

lady called

Evanka. She told

us a lot about the

position she was

doing and how

she found out

about the travel.

Then she showed

us some pictures

that the traffic

cameras took on

the motorway

outside.By Caci Room 17

Finally, we got to see Niva

Retimanu in action.

Niva was telling us to be quiet while

she was doing the bullet points.

When she was doing the radio

station, she was talking about a lady

and her baby in Tauranga

house. She talked about the

farmer in trouble with the

Prime Minister and the farmer

had to go to prison. She also

told us the name of the All

Blacks team.

Then it was time to come home!

What an awesome day!
