Senior School Activities
CELEBRATING GANDHIJI’S 150 BIRTH ANNIVERSARY
The 73rd Independence Day of our glorious nation holds special significance for all of us as it
also happens to be the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the Nation. To
make this Independence Day truly memorable and meaningful, a plethora of fun-filled events
and creative activities were conducted across classes in the school. The objective of these
events, thought-provoking special assemblies and activities was to highlight the essence and
morals espoused by Gandhiji not only in his relentless struggle for Indian Independence but
also in his glorious life. Gandhiji’s values of non-violence, truth and honesty, righteousness
and cleanliness were also emphasised by teachers in their interactive classroom sessions.
73 Hours of Social Change: Post Card Writing Activity
The Gandhi Samiti and Darshan Samiti, introduced CHANGE 150: a youth-powered
celebration of Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary. In pursuance of this initiative, all the
students of Classes VI to X of our school participated in a Post Card Writing Activity. On a
simple post card provided by the school, the students articulated one civic change that they
passionately wished to see in India. They wrote, drew and painted their ‘Social Change Idea’.
The said postcards were later posted to Change 150, Letter Farms, Post Bag No. 1683, Kochi,
Kerela 682015.
Essay Writing Competition at the Middle School and Senior School Level
Under the aegis of the Delhi Public School Society, DPS Vasant Kunj organised an Essay
Writing Competition for its students, leading to Gandhiji’s 150 years of birth anniversary
celebrations. The Competition was conducted at the Middle School and Senior School Level
and the topic for the same was ‘Swachhata Hi Sewa’. Students expressed their concerns on
cleanliness and hygiene in our environment. The participants proved that the pen is indeed
mightier than the sword, as the young enthusiastic scholars wrote strongly worded essays in
Hindi as well as in English.
Class VI
(a) A Special Class Assembly was conducted on 30 July, 2019 commemorating the birth
anniversary and the immense contribution of Mahatma Gandhi in the building of our nation. A
wide array of programmes were conducted to pay tribute to the Father of the Nation. The young
students sang Gandhiji’s popular bhajans, recited poems in his praise and spoke about his
exemplary life. The choir serenaded the audience with a melodious patriotic song.
Another Class Assembly on 1st October, 2019 was conducted by the students celebrating
Gandhi Jayanti. A Hindi prayer sung at Sabarmati Ashram was recreated beautifully by the
students. The assembly highlighted the Gandhian principles of ‘Practice before you Preach’
and ‘Dignity of Labour’.
(b) Class VI also conducted a Book Mark Making Activity for its students. The students
participated with élan in the activity and showcased their creative talents with great gusto.
Class VII
‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan Assembly’
A Cleaner India will be a Healthier India! The students of Class VII conducted two special
assemblies in which an inspiring skit was presented by students stressing on the urgent need to
support and encourage the ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’. The special assembly also saw a
powerful speech read out by students urging every student to contribute whole-heartedly in the
development of a Clean and Beautiful India. In the end, the children and teachers took pledge
to keep the school and the country clean.
Class VIII
(a) A Poster Making Competition was conducted for Class VIII on 18 April, 2019 celebrating
150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. All the appreciated entries were displayed on the
Class corridor board.
(b) A Class Assembly was conducted on 1st May, 2019 highlighting Gandhiji’s principles. A
patriotic song, ‘Ae Watan’ was sung by the students. A short skit was also presented stressing
on Gandhiji’s role in the freedom struggle.
Class IX
(a) Special Assembly Highlighting His Principles of Non- Violence and Truth
On 9 May 2019, Class 9 presented a special assembly to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of
Mahatma Gandhi, The Father of the Nation. The assembly commenced with the morning prayer
followed by The Thought for the Day and the News. The children showcased a skit highlighting the
principles of non- violence and truth preached by Bapu throughout his life. A brief speech was also
delivered outlining his achievements as a great leader. The assembly ended with the National Anthem.
(b) Special Assembly Highlighting Gandhiji’s Contribution to India’s Freedom Struggle As a part of the ongoing celebrations of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi,
Class 9 presented a special assembly on 8th August 2019, wherein the students played the
melodious tune of Gandhiji’s favourite bhajan ‘Raghupati Raghav’ on harmonium and
tabla. A very brief poem was also recited appreciating his contribution to India’s freedom
struggle. The assembly ended with the National Anthem.
Class X
Special assemblies were held on 26th July, 2019 and 9th August, 2019 for the students of Class
X. The aim of the assemblies was to spread awareness about the importance of cleanliness and
to promote a healthy, hygienic and safe environment. The theme of the assembly was
‘Gandhiji and Cleanliness’. The students presented a short skit on Mahatma Gandhi’s
life. All the students and teachers then pledged to devote 100 hours towards maintaining
cleanliness and to encourage at least 100 people to do the same, thereby spreading the core
Gandhian principles.
Classes XI and XII
A pen and paper Quiz on Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation was conducted for
Classes XI and XII. The quiz was conducted on 8th August, 2019. Students took part in the
Quiz with much excitement. The quiz covered the life and works of Gandhiji, such as his
early childhood, his education and his invaluable contribution to India’s Struggle for
Independence.
Zero Tolerance to Single Use Plastic
An engaging assembly was organised by the students of DPS Vasant Kunj on the balmy
morning of 1 October, 2019. The assembly was attended by the officials from the South Delhi
Municipal Corporation. The assembly was part of the school’s 150th Birth Anniversary
celebrations of Mahatma Gandhiji.
The theme of the assembly was ‘Zero Tolerance to Single Use Plastic’ and making South
Delhi a ‘Plastic Free Zone’. Emphasising this path breaking initiative of the Government of
India, the students presented a thought-provoking skit. The skit stressed on the complete ban
on the use of single-use plastic products from our lives. The young, enthusiastic students shared
powerful views and news reinforcing the urgent need to preserve our Mother Earth and make
it completely plastic free.
After the compelling assembly by the students, the MCD officials took centre stage and
educated the young minds about the menace of plastic and the health hazards it is posing to the
world at large. They later took an ‘Anti Plastic Pledge’ urging the student to vow
to be eco-warriors discarding the rampant use of PET bottles, plastic cups, straws and other
thermocol items.
FIT INDIA PLOGGING -2nd October, 2019
In compliance with the directives of DOE and the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s call for a mass
movement, DPS Vasant Kunj organized a FIT INDIA Plogging Run for the students, staff and
Heads of Schools on 2 October, 2019. This laudable and unprecedented initiative of the
Government of India is to promote the habit of fitness and cleanliness in all its citizens.
Early morning on the eventful day, around 200 students and 30 teachers, along with the
Principal and the Vice Principal assembled in the school’s big Football field for the same. The
Principal along with the students and staff, took the pledge to become eco-warriors and make
earnest efforts to keep the surroundings clean and make the school, country and the world a
plastic-free zone. The students, teachers and staff of the school then jogged and walked the 2
km distance around the Bio Diversity Park near the school and collected the Single Use Plastic
Waste from around the dedicated path.
The teachers also took the brooms in their hands and swept the grounds of the school
displaying their will to implement Mahatma Gandhiji’s principle of cleanliness.
‘Fit India Campaign’- 2019
Delhi Public School Vasant Kunj, made necessary arrangements for viewing/ hearing of the
launch function of the Fit India Movement for its students and staff members. Elaborate
arrangements were made for students as well as staff of the school to view/ hear the PM
Narendra Modi’s speech and reap the benefits of the wellness movement. A total of 2250
students from Class Nursery to Class XII viewed/ heard the address and enthusiastically
participated in the launch of this worthy initiative. All the students were inspired by the
PM’s impassioned address and took the pledge to adopt a healthy lifestyle.
‘No Tobacco Drive’
To reinforce the government's emphasis on the issue of second-hand smoke and the
implementation of smoke-free policies in India, an anti-tobacco pledge was undertaken
on 2nd October, 2019 by the staff of Delhi Public School, Vasant Kunj. As per the
guidelines of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, this was part of the drive that may
be undertaken during 2nd October, 2019 to 26th January, 2020 to make all Educational
Institutions ‘Tobacco Free’.
Celebrating Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th Birth Anniversary this year, we at Delhi Public
School, Vasant Kunj are committed to ensure that the school campus is totally Tobacco-
Free’. Our school has been strictly declared a ‘Tobacco Free Zone’ with absolutely zero
tolerance for the violators.
