Introduction Learning can be measured in many and varied ways. At LORDS, we aim to provide opportunities that suit each individual learner and tailor programs to ensure that each student is supported in their chosen learning pathway. While some students may be interested in a university pathway, others have interests and talents that will lead them on different journeys. Other students may want to keep their options open and prepare for both university and vocational pathways. The aim of Vocational Education and Training (VET) Pathways at LORDS is to provide a purposeful and meaningful vocational experience. A VET pathway provides students with a range of career and learning opportunities and is an excellent pathway into the world of work, further training or university entry.

What is Vocational Education and Training (VET)?

VET allows students to undertake nationally recognised vocational qualifications while still at school. Qualifications are available at Certificate I, II, III, IV and Diploma level. Students combine general and applied subjects with vocational studies. This provides opportunities to explore career options and pathways, learn in the workplace and develop skills that prepare them for the workforce and further study. VET aims to give students workplace skills and knowledge for a career they are passionate about. It can enhance young people’s chances of obtaining employment/further study upon leaving school. We aim to cater to each individual’s needs and help assist students to navigate their career interests. As part of this VET pathway, we offer a number of opportunities:

Top 10 Reasons to explore a VET Pathway at LORDS

1. You can do the subjects you enjoy as well as doing your vocational courses 2. You can still achieve your QCE which includes your VET qualification 3. You can continue studying with your current group of friends 4. You can still attend your formal, valedictory and final assembly with your friends 5. You can get an ATAR and a VET qualification, and the VET qualification can even count

What does the VET Program involve?

Work Experience Block (Years 10)

As part of the Year 10 ‘Futures’ Career Development Program, Year 10 students will be involved in Work Experience for one week at the end of Term 2. Work Experience provides students with invaluable, real-life workplace experience, which can play a significant role in helping students to consider their future pathways. This short placement in the workplace can help students confirm their goals or correct any misconceptions of a job they may have. Students often return more motivated to work toward future career goals. Work experience gives students a strong advantage in the workplace as they start looking for part-time work, for apprenticeships, traineeship or as full-time work, post-school. Through work experience, students have first-hand insight into industry practices and expectations before they walk in the door for an interview. Students in Year 10, 11 and 12 are able to complete work experience at any time in consultation with the Pathways Coordinator. If opportunities arise to experience different industries through Year 11 and 12, we encourage participation with minimal distraction to senior subjects.

TAFE at School VET students are able to participate in the TAFE at School program and complete a TAFE Queensland qualification while still at school. They can choose from a variety of Certificate I, Certificate II, Certificate III and Certificate IV qualifications. All TAFE at School qualifications, upon successful completion, count towards the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). Completing a “TAFE at School” course of Certificate III or higher can present possible opportunities that open up new pathways to university.

Benefits of TAFE at School

Fits around high school studies

TAFE at School courses work in with the student’s existing high school studies. It can also count towards their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). TAFE at School allows students to join the workforce sooner by giving them a nationally recognised qualification while still at school. Students build practical skills and graduate job ready, giving them a head start in the job market.

Direct entry to a TAFE Queensland course

Completing a TAFE at School qualification gives students direct entry into any related TAFE Queensland course. Plus, if they continue on to a diploma qualification, they can take advantage of TAFE’s articulation arrangements with some of Australia’s top universities. If students decide to continue their studies at university, they may receive credit for study at TAFE Queensland, taking time off their degree.

Pathways to a trade qualification

Students considering a trade qualification can get a head start with their training while still at school. TAFE at School offers a variety of pre-apprenticeship qualifications in Plumbing, Electrical, Automotive, Construction, Engineering, Marine Technology, Hairdressing and Beauty.

TAFE at School program.

TAFE courses are offered on varying days of the week and every effort is made to accommodate student choices. Students must be aware that they will be out of the School one day per week and will need to catch up on studies missed. It is important to note that we have no control over:

• selection of courses offered • days and times offered • venue

• eligibility e.g. Year 11 or 12 • costs

Students need to make their own transport arrangements to and from TAFE.

Certificate courses offered through Vocational Education Pathways are selected based on current research into industry trends regarding the workforce of the future. At LORDS, we have students attending both the Gold Coast and Brisbane campuses of TAFE depending on the course of study they intend to pursue. Please note: Certificate courses listed in this handbook are accurate at the time of publishing.

School-based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SATs) SATs allow students to commence an apprenticeship or complete a traineeship while at school. They combine paid work, training and school as well as an industry recognised qualification and points towards the QCE. The main advantage of SATs is the on-the-job training. There are two main differences between a school-based apprentice and a school-based trainee. A school-based apprentice is trained in a skilled trade such as electrical, plumbing, hairdressing, cabinet making and automotive just to name a few. At the end of Year 12, school-based apprenticeships roll over into full-time apprenticeships. School-based trainees are trained in a vocational area, such as office administration, information technology, hospitality and childcare, and upon completion will receive a minimum of a Certificate II in the chosen vocational area. Traineeships are usually completed by the end of Year 12. A highly successful work experience placement is often an effective stimulus for employers to make an offer of employment. It is important to remember, however, that not all employers are in a financial position to engage an apprentice or trainee. SATs allow students to work as paid employees (usually 1-2 days per week) and obtain nationally recognised qualifications, all while at school. It should be noted that in some instances students may be required to work during their holiday periods as up to 100 days of employment over 24 months may be required. Students are expected to catch up on all schoolwork missed and if required.

More flexibility and variety in learning

The variety provided by SATs can have enormous benefits for young people who prefer hands on learning to traditional schooling pathways.

Head start in a career

Young people employed in SATs develop workplace skills, knowledge and confidence and have a competitive edge when applying for jobs. A SAT can lead directly to full-time employment once a student has left school. They give students realistic exposure to the workplace.

Nationally recognised qualification

All SATs participate in vocational training that contributes to a Certificate II, III or higher vocational qualification which can count towards the student’s QCE. A Certificate III or higher can be included in the ATAR calculation.

An opportunity to learn and earn

Students are paid while they learn workplace skills, gain confidence, and adapt to a work environment. It gives the student the opportunity to put skills learnt into practice in a real work environment.

Diploma of Business LORDS has partnered with Propel Education to offer students in Year 12 the Diploma of Business. Students may choose to complete this study in addition to their ATAR pathway or as part of their vocational education studies while at school. The course is heavily subsidised for school-based students however, there is an out of pocket expense to complete this qualification.

Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) All senior students are working towards a QCE. The QCE is a qualification based on specified minimum requirements of the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA). To be eligible, students must achieve:

• A set amount of learning by gaining 20 credits o For subjects, 1 credit point is generally equated to passing 1 unit of study. o For certificate study: 4 credits for a Certificate II

8 credits for a Certificate III 12 credits for a Diploma (8 can be used for a QCE)

o If multiple certificates are obtained, total QCE credits may be reduced due to completion of the same competency across both courses.

o A maximum of 8 credits from certificate study will contribute to the QCE, the remaining 12 credits must come from completed subjects (either General or Applied).

• A set standard of learning

o Students are to achieve to the required standard: Sound Achievement ‘C’ in General or Applied courses or the completion of a certificate course.

• A set pattern of learning

o 12 credit points from completed core subjects. In most cases this would be completion of three General or Applied subjects across two years of study.

o If students transfer between subjects, this will still contribute towards a set pattern of learning.

o Units 3 and 4 must be studied together and two credit points are given upon completion of both units at a ‘C’ standard.

• The literacy and numeracy requirements

o A 'C' or better in any Mathematics or English unit.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) This is to acknowledge skills/abilities already held, regardless of how, when or where the learning occurred. When applying for RPL, an individual’s skills would be assessed to determine the extent to which that individual satisfies the necessary requirements. Evidence might include:

• letters or testimonials from employers, and/or • samples of work.

Unique Student Identifier (USI) A USI - Unique Student Identifier is a reference number that creates an online record of your training and qualifications attained in Australia. If you are a new student undertaking nationally recognised training, you need a USI in order to receive your qualification or statement of attainment. A USI is for life! You only have to create it once. You will need to provide identification to create a USI. The following are acceptable forms of ID to create a USI. You will need at least one of the identity documents listed below: • Australian Passport • Non-Australian Passport (with Australian Visa) • Australian Birth Certificate • Australian Driver's Licence • Medicare Card • Certificate of Registration by Decent • Citizenship Certificate • ImmiCard You can create your USI by going to https://www.usi.gov.au/students/create-usi and following the directions.
