Keeping Your Spine Safe and StrongWhen it comes to caring for our bodies, the spine is one of the most important components

that you should protect and strengthen, especially as you age. The spine is made of 33

individual bony vertebrae stacked one on top of another. This spinal column provides the

main support for your body, allowing you to stand upright, bend, and twist, while protecting

the spinal cord and the neural system from injury. Strong bones and muscles, flexible

tendons and ligaments, and sensitive nerves contribute to a healthy spine, which delivers

information from the brain to the rest of your body, prompting movement in your limbs.

There are many specialists who treat different spine problems. The right specialist(s) to treat

your condition depends on the type and severity of the injury or disease.

“We often take the spine for granted,” says Michael C. Kachmann, MD, a neurological

surgeon with the TriHealth Neuroscience Institute. “A lot of people have poor posture

or lift in a bad way, they don’t protect their back, and end up with low back pain after

years of improper sitting or lifting.”

As the spine ages, it goes through degenerative changes, just like the rest of the body,

but Dr. Kachmann says there are things that one can do to protect the spine later in

life. The list includes staying active to keep your core muscles strong to support the

spine, asking for help with lifting and maintaining a healthy weight.

If you would like to know more about the spine, this month’s Focus On class features

the anatomy of your back and how to appropriately care for it through your daily

activities.

4. Pain Relief by Spinal Cord Stimulation Spinal cord stimulation delivers low voltage current to block the feeling of pain. A small device implanted in the body transmits an electrical current to the spinal cord. It helps patients with chronic pain better manage symptoms and potentially decrease use of pain medications.

Twin Lakes, Davies Community Center Thursday, November 15, 10–11 a.m.

5. Muscle and Bone! Lunch and Learn Strong bones, flexible muscles, good cartilage—All important to a pain free spine. How much protein do you need for building muscle? Are there foods that help with pain? We know inflammation is a big part of pain, anywhere in the body. Come hear our wonderful dietician tell us what foods will hurt and what will help!

Twin Lakes, Davies Community Center Tuesday, December 4, 11 a.m.–12:30 p.m.

1. Good vs. Bad Exercises to Protect Your Back

Back pain results when the spine is stressed by injury, disease, wear and tear, or poor body mechanics. Acute low back pain is abrupt, intense pain that subsides after a period of days or weeks. It typically resolves with rest, physical therapy, and other self-care measures. Learn good and bad exercises for the mature spine to prevent or ease pain. Come dressed to try a few!

Nathanael Greene Lodge Wednesday, September 19, 10–11 a.m.

Twin Lakes, Davies Community Center Thursday, October 4, 10–11 a.m.

2. Do I have to have Surgery?Maybe not! Spinal stenosis is the narrowing of the bony canals through which the nerves and spinal cord pass. Arthritis can cause the facet joints and ligaments to enlarge and thicken restricting the space for the nerves. The pinched nerves become inflamed and can cause pain, cramping, or weakness in your legs or arms. This talk will explore how diagnosis happens and non-invasive treatment options.

Nathanael Greene Lodge Wednesday, October 10 1–2 p.m. (Please note time change)

Twin Lakes, Davies Community Center Friday, October 12, 10–11 a.m.

3. Minimally Invasive & Complex Spine Surgery

As you age, the spine begins to show signs of wear and tear as the discs dry out and shrink. These age-related changes can lead to arthritis, disc herniation, or stenosis. Adult scoliosis (curvature of the spine) and kyphosis (“humpback”) can also be caused by age-related wear and tear or complications from past surgeries. Moderate deformity occurs when the facet joints and discs deteriorate over time and are no longer able to support the spine’s normal posture. Learn about the surgical treatments available for these problems.

Twin Lakes, Davies Community Center Thursday, October 18, 10–11 a.m.

Nathanael Greene Lodge Tuesday, October 23, 10–11 a.m.

Pick up that box—safely! There are several important steps to think about when trying to lift or carry something. They go beyond not bending over and just grabbing.

Warm up—do a few stretches before you put those muscles to the test. It will keep you from injuring a cold muscle with sudden movement.

Look before you lift—How heavy is this going to be? Is it full of towels or books? Where will your hands go? Are there holes in which to put your fingers?

Clear a path! Think about where you are going. What is in your way? Furniture? A door? A throw rug? Making a clear path will save a lot of injuries.

This is not a fashion parade! Wear sensible, sturdy, closed toed shoes. It will help you keep your balance, you won’t slip on the hardwood, you can negotiate stairs, and if you drop something, you won’t break a toe!

Get some wheels! A moving dolly or hand truck will save you a lot of pain! Borrow one if you need to. They are invaluable.
