SeniorNet Mar lborough Sounds March 2014
Greetings,
For those of you who are interested in keeping up with technol-
ogy I would recommend an email/blog that comes out weekly
called ‘Ask Leo”. A week or two back he posted a very thought
provoking piece called “You are never too old” which struck a
chord with me.
Should you wish to follow this further Google for
askleo.com/20433 and while you are there, and if you like what
you see, you can sign up to receive the blog on a regular basis.
Senior Net Marlborough Sounds has just about wound down for 2015.
There are sll some courses open for November and the schedule for
those is elsewhere in this newsleer. As usual we will be shung down
over December and January. Not only is it the fesval season and the
summer holidays but I suspect that for many of you Grandchildren loom
large in the reckoning.
By now many of you will have downloaded and installed Windows 10.
The New Zealand Federaon of SeniorNet Sociees, to give it it’s full
name, has produced a “How To” DVD on Windows 10 and we will be
using it for workshops at the Learning Centre. If you would like to learn
more about Windows 10 and partake in a workshop let us know and we
can arrange a (some?) date.

Computer housekeeping.
Keeping your computer dy and running faster.
Basically, you’ll be keeping your computer in good running order by giving it a
regular “wash & brush-up”. If you do this regularly – and the frequency is a
reflecon of how much use your computer gets – it keeps the machine run-
ning smoothly and minimises e-infecons. You’ll possibly have seen this pro-
cess referred to as “opmising your computer”. Three Hours

Addional course informaon.
Apart from the course schedule for November there are a three other courses
that have been requested. We are working towards making these happen.
We have been asked to run a Mac course and Forbes Wilson has agreed to take it at Linkwater. It will be
someme in November and we already have 2 students ready and willing. So all you Mac, iPad and iPhone
users get in touch with Forbes who wants to hear from you to set a me and date. His phone number is 03
573 6299.
There has been a request for a spreadsheet course using Excel and although it’s a bit late to sort it for this
year we have it on the calendar for February. If you are interested call Brian Cameron on 03 574 2267.
Is anyone interested in a PowerPoint course? Donald McIver is keen to hear from you if you are. His phone is

SCAMS
Sadly there are a lot of them about. The internet has made it much easi-
er for criminals to rob you of your valuables. No need to hold you up at
gunpoint anymore; just phone or email you and say that they are from
some reputable company and ask you for some details. One of my fa-
vourites is the very Asian voice who aer a long pause when you think
that there is no-one there will tell you they are from Microso and that
there is a problem with your computer. Microso will never repeat never phone you.
There are several ways to deal with this.
The simple way is simply to hang up. However if you have the me and want to spend some of their money on
the phone call, try asking which computer. When they answer the one connected to the internet tell them
that you have five computers and that they are all connected. Be invenve and string them along as long as
you can, just for fun but whatever happens do not give them any personal informaon.
If you really can’t be bothered, I heard of a lady who kept a referee’s whistle next to the phone!
If you get an email from a friend with just a link to another website – Blow it away.
If you get an email from a friend saying that they are stuck in some outlandish place with no money and ask-
ing you to help. Blow it away – It’s a Scam.
And Banks will NEVER contact you by phone or email either unless of course you ask them to and even then
make certain that it’s really your bank and they will NEVER ask you to confirm details either on the phone or
internet, except, of course, security quesons.
And sadly one other thing. If you find a CD/DVD or Flashdrive lying somewhere like a car park, do not exercise
your curiosity about it’s contents. They are almost certainly a means of hacking into your computer. Bin it at
the first opportunity.
The Department of Internal Affairs has a website where you can check on the latest reported scams
– so if you have any suspicions it is a good idea to visit

John Herbert
At the September commiee meeng John advised that he would be stepping down from the com-
miee in November. His departure will be a huge loss to SeniorNet Marlborough Sounds.
As our senior technician since not long aer SNMS started he has given his me and energy to our
cause. He has kept our equipment in working order, built new machines for us from scratch, advised
on the purchase of new gear and provided us with a wealth of technical informaon. He has been on
call when problems arise and has been generous with his me and know how. In purely monetary
terms he has saved us thousands of dollars.
We thank you John for your years of dedicated service to SeniorNet Marlborough Sounds and wish
you and Barbara well for the future.
The Digital Imaging Group (Camera Club)
The October meeng was a busy one. Nine members were present and
showed many interesng photos on the subject of cobwebs. A difficult sub-
ject that proved challenging. The best liked photo was the stunning one
shown here by Sigrid.
In addion we covered the first part of a course on Eight Condions of Light. There will be some busy
photographers around as
they complete homework
assignments before the next
meeng.
The second part of the
course will be presented at
the November meeng. If
you would like to join us at
1:30 pm on November 5 at
St Luke’s community room
you would be most wel-
come.
SOS for SeniorNet Commiee Members
Next year the commiee will be unable to funcon unless we get some new members. It is inter-
esng that although women make up three quarters of our students there are just two ladies on the
commiee. As well, a third of our members come from Picton but there are none on the commiee.
Our treasurer Faye Daken has been a member of the commiee since its incepon and has indicated
that she will not be standing for the commiee next year. Without a treasurer we cannot connue to
run classes and workshops. Would some of those who have benefied from classes please put their
names forward now, this is really urgent. Phone Bryan 574 1311 or Donald 574 2326

Profile Donald McIver Deputy Chairman
My early years were spent in Dunedin, and I was educated at Otago Boys
High School, during ww2, and later at Dunedin Teachers’ Training College. I
was fortunate to study music privately under some very able teachers and
was appointed organist and choirmaster at St John’s Roslyn at the age of
seventeen. The first service I played for was broadcast—quite some ordeal.
It was a steep learning curve, at that age, training choristers aged from
eight to eighty. I went on to similar roles at All Saints’ Dunedin, St Luke’s
Oamaru, All Saints Palmerston North and Nelson Cathedral and was fortu-
nate to obtain teaching posions to compliment these roles including a
year’s secondment to lecture in music at Palmerston North Teachers Col-
lege. I can claim to have taught students and choristers from the age of five
to eighty five. I was also lucky enough to be part of a small choral group who made regular broadcasts for
which we each received the handsome sum of two guineas.
I was involved in conducng choral sociees in Palmerston North and Nelson including works as diverse
as The Messiah, Bach’s St John’s Passion, and Ceremony of Carols by Benjamin Brien. Conducng large
performances with choir and orchestra was parcularly challenging. In schools my involvement included
producons of The Pirates of Penzance, Oliver, The Daniel Jazz and many others including the vast work
“Under the Sun” by Jenny McLeod where I was one of six conductors with thousands of performers in a
huge stadium.
I was also involved with the Royal School of Church Music, a world-wide organisaon, and was a special
commissioner for a number of years conducng choir schools throughout the country. A highlight of my
work in this field came in 1987 when I was invited to Addington Palace to receive an RSCM honorary di-
ploma. (Hon RSCM)
In 1988 it was me to rere, coming to live in the Sounds, and was one of those involved in seng up
SeniorNet Marlborough. However it was a long trek to town to tutor classes. Keeping one page ahead of
the students was also quite a challenge. In 2001 Margaret Rodley and I held discussions with a number of
Sounds residents and decided it was me to form a Sounds SeniorNet group. Early classes were held in
the old Grove motels and then at Linkwater school, before moving to St Luke’s.
I have three children living in Nelson and Christchurch, three grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Sadly my wife, Daphne, whom I met in the Choir at All Saints Dunedin, passed away in 2014 aer a bale
with cancer. She had been a wonderful supporter, as well as an arst, embroiderer and poer. I had to
give up my associaon with SeniorNet while she needed my care. We were fortunate to have sixty two
years together.
I don’t pretend to be a computer whiz- quite the opposite. My computer is full of gremlins and some sit
on my shoulder poised and waing to pounce. I do enjoy helping people learn about some computer ap-
plicaons and belong to both the SeniorNet Photographic Group and the Genealogy Group.
I believe SeniorNet Marlborough Sounds has a role to play bringing advances in technology to the local
community. I would like to see more seniors acvely involved in learning and tutoring about the age in
which we live.

Have you oen wondered
why the Help Menu pro-
vides so lile useful help?
Is this where your ques-
ons are answered?
Working people frequently ask rered people
what they do to make their days interesng. ..
Well, for example, the other day my wife and I
went into town and went into a shop. We were
only in there for about 5 minutes. When we
came out, there was a cop wring out a parking
cket. We went up to him and said, "Come on
man, how about giving a senior cizen a break?"
He ignored us and connued wring the cket. I
called him a storm trooper. He glared at me and
started wring another cket for having worn
res. So my wife called him a ****-head. He fin-
ished the second cket and put it on the wind-
shield with the first. Then he started wring a
third cket. This went on for about 20 minutes.
The more we abused him, the more ckets he
wrote.
Personally, we didn't care. We came into town
by bus. SeniorNet Otago

A Poem by Valerie Waite
The computer swallowed Grandma,
Yes, honestly it’s true!
She pressed 'control and 'enter'
And disappeared from view.
It devoured her completely,
The thought just makes me squirm.
She must have caught a virus
Or been eaten by a worm.
I've searched through the recycle bin
And files of every kind;
I've even used the Internet,
But nothing did I find.
In desperation, I asked Mr. Google
My searches to refine.
The reply from him was negative,
Not a thing was found 'online.'
So, if inside your 'Inbox,'
My Grandma you should see,
Please 'Copy, Scan' and 'Paste' her,
And send her back to me ..
This is a tribute to all the Grandmas & Grandpas, Nannas &
Pops, who have been fearless and learned to use the Com-
puter.........
They are the greatest!!!
We do not stop playing because we grow old;
We grow old because we stop playing ...
NEVER Be The First To Get Old!

Discounts for Members
Noel Leeming has been a particularly good supporter of
SeniorNet. If you are purchasing goods from them make
sure you let the sales person know you are a SeniorNet member. They will then check on the cost price of the
item you are interested in and sell it to you at cost plus 12.5 % . The amount you save on items will vary con-
siderably— from nothing to quite considerable sums.
Now, it is possible to get a discount using a gold card, but what you may not realise is that if you make a pur-
chase as a SeniorNet member the Federation receives a payment of 2% in addition to your reduced price. If
you use your gold card the Federation receives nothing.
This extra funding will become increasingly important next year when we receive no further
funding from the Tertiary Education Commission. Unfortunately their funding criteria has
changed and it is impossible for us to qualify under the new conditions.
Computer Food was formed in 1996 to be a discount supplier of:
Ink and Toner Cartridges - both original OEM and a wide range
of reliable, low priced compatible cartridges.
A wide variety of Photo papers including NZ's lowest priced
range
CD and DVD Media
Flash Cards for Digital Camera's, Cell phones and MP3 players
Ordering can be done by phone or through its popular and easy to use web site
www.consumables.co.nz.
For SeniorNet Federation members we offer a discount of 5% off all our already discounted Ink &
Toner cartridges, Paper and Media - even discounting items already on special. We deliver them
Freight free to anywhere in New Zealand.
All you need to do is, when buying online, enter 6789 in the "Discount or Gift Certificate Code" box
in the Checkout Screen to get your discount. If ordering by phone via our Free Phone line 0800
003663 just mention you are a Member of the SeniorNet Federation.
These are just two of a number of benefits available to SeniorNet
members. To see the full range visit the SeniorNet NZ web site and
