The Centers for Medicare &Medicaid Services (CMS) hasannounced that as of the endof October, more seniors andpeople with disabilities onMedicare have seensignificantly lower costs forimportant health care –through both discounts onbrand-name drugs in theMedicare Part D "donut hole"coverage gap and freepreventive care.

“Thanks to the AffordableCare Act, millions ofAmericans are receiving freepreventive services and getting

cheaper prescription drugs,”said Acting CMSAdministrator MarilynTavenner.

Data show that 2.65 millionpeople with Medicare havesaved more than $1.5 billionon their prescriptions –averaging about $569 perperson. In South Dakota,7,766 people with Medicarehave saved $4,572,894 –averaging about $589 perperson.

And, as of the end ofNovember, more than 24.2million people with Medicare

have taken advantage of atleast one free preventivebenefit – including the newAnnual Wellness Visit – madepossible by the AffordableCare Act. In South Dakota,81,349 people with Medicarehave taken advantage of thefree preventive coverage.

Building on savings in 2011,Medicare also recentlyannounced that the Part Bdeductible will be $22 lower in2012 and average MedicareAdvantage premiums areprojected to drop four percentin 2012. Part B premiums,

which cover outpatientservices including doctorvisits, are estimated to increaseby only $3.50 per month formost beneficiaries in 2012, andsome will see a decrease.These changes will be morethan offset by the averageSocial Security cost of livingincrease ($43 per month forretired workers).

People with Medicare cannow review their drug andhealth plan coverage optionsfor 2012 as part of the annualMedicare Open EnrollmentPeriod. CMS is highlighting

plans that have achieved anoverall quality rating of fivestars with a high performer or“gold star” icon on Medicare’sPlan Finder –www.medicare.gov/find-a-plan.

Seniors, disabled seeing lower health care costs

Beginning Jan. 1, 2012, fiveSouth Dakota communities willimplement new municipal taxes orupdate their current city taxes.

The municipal tax changes thatwill take effect next month include:

• Bruce is imposing a 1 percentgeneral sales and use tax rate

• Camp Crook is imposing a 1percent general sales and use tax rate

• Frankfort is imposing a 1

percent general sales and use tax rate • Oldham is imposing a 2

percent general sales and use tax rate• Irene is imposing a 1 percent

gross receipts tax on alcoholicbeverages, lodging, eatingestablishments, and admissions toplaces of amusement, cultural andathletic events. This tax is inaddition to their 2 percent generalsales tax rate.
