A Property Trust Will can be your saviour UNSURPRISINGLY, few of us have considered what the effect might be on our savings and investments, or even our home, if (as is most probable) we ever needed residential care later in life. Most people assume that we shall pass on our assets to our children or other relatives in due course; yet, this may not always be the case, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect our assets from being taken to pay care home fees. In recent years, it has become increasingly apparent that the State will only provide for those with little or no savings or assets; everyone else is expected to pay at least part (if not all) of his or her own costs. Currently, anyone with assets in excess of £22,250 (this figure includes the family home) is not eligible for any state help with his or her residential care fees; if you have more than £12,000, but less than £22,500, you are only entitled to partial assistance. e net result is that anyone, who owns his or her own home, is unlikely to receive assistance, even if they do not possess large amounts of cash-assets. Even if you DON'T have the cash readily available, the Department of Social Security can still place a charge against the family home, which enables it to recover the monies owing, when the property is eventually sold! Bear in mind that average residential care fees start in the region of £500 per week, so it is clear how quickly assets can be eroded. e DSS has oſten become the sole, outright owner of the family home aſter the death of an elderly parent, who had been living in a nursing home. However, there is a solution - in the form of Property Trust wills A 'Property Trust' is based around three, basic elements: the basis on which you own your property, the Trust terms and your Wills, which contain the Trust investment. e Property Trust can only be created, while both partners remain alive and the property must be owned as Tenants in Common (the Trust instrument is, then, included in both Wills, but does not come into force until the death of the first). Upon the first death, their share of the property (typically 50%) is placed into the Trust to be adminstered by the Trustees nominated in the Will, and this, usually, includes the surviving spouse. e Will also specifies who is to be the ultimate beneficiary of this share in the property, and the Trustee's duty is to protect the property for the beneficiaries' benefit. e surviving spouse, under the Trust's terms, has the right to remain living in the property for the rest of his or her life; on the death of the second spouse, the Trust comes to an end, and the property passes absolutely to the beneficiaries. Are you a Wise Owl or a Head-Burying Ostrich when it comes to that d-word?IF you're an Ostrich, you prefer not to think about the inevitable. Being an Ostrich means trusting the fortunes of your loved ones to chance, once you've gone, and having no control over what happens to your possessions and who should benefit from them.

TO an ostrich, death is a five-letter word and a load of stigma.

IF, however, you're a wise owl, you take the time to think, question, and act in order to write a will, and take steps to protect your loved ones, when you're gone.

WHY BOTHER MAKING A WILL? MY FAMILY WILL GET EVERYTHING WHEN I DIE! WON'T THEY?

WRITING a Will may be something you've been thinking about for many years. The reasons for having a Will are many, but, if for no other reason, a Will makes life a lot easier for those you leave behind at a time of sorrow. If you die without a Will (Intestate), your family has to sort out many administrative items and are obliged to the decisions made by law as to who inherits what, decisions you should have really made by writing a Will.

AS to when you should write a Will, the answer is NOW. There may be plenty of life in you yet, but accidents and illness have absolutely no respect for age. Also, bear in mind that a modern Will is written in such a way that it shouldn't need much changing, so it's not something you have to think about often, but only in the event of a major change in circumstances, such as marriage, birth of a first child or divorce.

SO, why do many people put off the task of writing a Will?

EXCUSES: there are many excuses for putting off writing a Will. Here are the most common ones:

1. "WRITING A WILL IS TEMPTING FATE": One in three adults in Britain have already written a Will - so, if writing one has fatal results, the population would soon be reduced by 18 million people! In fact, the British annual death-rate is surprisingly stable and definitely bears no relation to the number of people who write Wills.

2. "I'VE GOT NOTHING TO LEAVE": Everybody leaves something. It may not be much, but, surely, that's even more reason to make sure it goes to those you care about? Also, it is not just making sure your worldly goods go to the right

people. As mentioned, a Will can mean a lot less inconvenience for those left to sort things out.

3. "I JUST HAVEN'T GOT ROUND TO IT": This is normally because the job doesn't rate high enough on your list of priorities. If the roof leaks, no matter what you're doing or how tight your finances, you get it fixed fast! We can honestly say that the vast majority of clients feel great after we have written their Wills.

We often receive comments, such as "What a relief" or "I've put it off for years, but, at last, I can rest easy."

THE ALTERNATIVE

IF you die without a Will, all your money and possessions (your Estate) will be distributed, according to strict legal rules and regulations. These rules are called the Laws of Intestacy. In many cases, the Intestacy Laws distribute an Estate in a way the deceased would not have wanted, sometimes with disastrous results.

Your circumstances will fall into one of the following categories: Married, Cohabiting and Single.

Many complexities can arise, and we shall cover these in full detail (as well as dispelling many unfounded, but popular, beliefs about them) in our next issue.

CONTENTSJANUARY 20156 It's the 'Show of the Year' on Saturday/Sunday, January 17th/18th, as, once again, Blackpool stages its world-famous 'Pigeon Weekend'! The resorts Winter Gardens is, as ever, the venue for the largest gathering of pigeon-fanciers in the UK, organised by the Royal Pigeon Racing Association. The event attracts 'flocks' of enthusiasts of the avian family, Columbidae. The Blackpool show is, indibitably, one of the biggest in the world, attracting around 25,000 visitors, and is the town's busiest weekend of the year.

9 The latest charity night to be staged at Baddeley Green WMC features a Ladies' Fresh Air Pink Night on Friday, January 23rd. Entertainment will be provided by drag queen, the fabulous Miss Angel Delight, and wonderful Soul & Motown singer, Randy. Tickets, priced at £25, are available by telephoning Karen on 07854-548670 or Carli on 07468-575227.

16 Come back to the 1980s with Congleton Players as they stage John Godber's worldwide hit, 'Bouncers', at Daneside Theatre next month! Meet our eponymous heroes: your 'friendly', neighbourhood law-enforcers (if you have ever been out at night, you will know the type - black-suited and bow-tied, standing at the entrance). Four, high-energy actors portray over 20, different characters in one. crazy night on the town. Directed by Simon Wain, the show runs from Tuesday, February 3rd, to Saturday, February 7th.

18 As heard on BBC Radio 4, John Shuttleworth returns to Newcastle's New Vic Theatre with his latest show, 'A Wee Ken to Remember', on Wednesday, February 18th. He wanted to share memories of favourite weekends, but, by mistake, the poster said: 'wee Ken', instead of 'Weekend'. So, John has to spend the evening, paying homage to his next-door neighbour and sole agent - the diminutive Ken Worthington! In his brand-new show, "Sheffield's funniest man" will perform classic tunes, along with newer ditties.

20 Cold, damp weather can unmask signs of arthritic change in dogs and cats, and, now is a great time to take a good look your pets and make sure that they are comfortable. Do they have difficulty getting up and lying down? Do they seem stiff or lame? Does it take a while for them to get going in the morning? If so, your pet will benefit from a check-over to identify any problems and work how best to treat them. If your pet is showing any signs of arthritis call into The Croft Veterinary Clinic, Newcastle-under-Lyme, today.

'Show of the Year' at The Winter GardensBLACKPOOL'S Winter Gardens is, once again, the venue for the fabulous event that is the Royal Pigeon Racing Association's 'Show of the Year'!

Best-known (in colloquial parlance) as the 'Pigeon Weekend', this is a legendary, three-day event, which will induce myriad pigeon-fanciers and fellow enthusiasts of the avian family, Columbidae, to 'flock' to England's most popular seaside resort on Saturday/Sunday, January 17th/18th.

The largest gathering of pigeon-fanciers in the UK, this show offers something for the whole family; whether you are a new member, curious about pigeons or a veteran pigeon-fancier (from trade-stands, various groups and organisations, talks, films, young fanciers areas, to the main event [the

showing and judging of thousands of the country's top pigeons]).

More than that, it's an amazing chance for pigeon-fanciers to meet up.

The Blackpool show is, indubitably, one of the larget in the world, and regularly attracts around 25,000 visitors.

It is regarded as the resort's busiest weekend of the year, when hoteliers, restaurateurs, taxi-drivers and shopkeepers welcome pigeon-fanciers and their families with open arms!

Aficionados can buy anything from a £25,000 mahogany loft to a bag of pigeon-corn at one of the 200 or so

trade-stands.

Thousands of avians chamnges hands at sales and auctions, where sums of £10 to, perhaps, £10,000 can be paid for a pedigree racing pigeon or its offspring.

Events are held for young fanciers, and wives and partners go off to the variety of shops.

There is a real brotherhood of fanciers and friends who will meet up from various parts of the country, having not seen their pals since the previous show!

Of course, there is a serious side to the show and in what

can be termed the 'Crufts of the Pigeon World' , approximately 2,500 birds are on display, all attempting to win 'best in show', with the winner going on to the

Supreme Champion class.

When all the hard work is done, the money is counted; all the profit from the show is donated to various charities.

The event supports the British Fanciers' Pigeon Lung Research Team with a sizeable grant each year, enabling it to continue research into this respiratory disease, and it is also the largest, single donor to

ASBAH (Association for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus) with over £440,000!

Your Country Needs - Seniors!THAT'S the message from the Ministry of Defence which has decided that some over-50s can join the British Army Reserve, thanks to a new recruitment drive. The upper-age-limit for former regular army soldiers has been raised from 43 to 52 and the ceiling for ex-commissioned officers is now 57, as opposed to 35.The changes have been made to reflect the demographics and health of the population, and (avers the MoD) "consequently widens the potential recruitment pool".There were an additional 590 recruits to the army reserve in the year to October, compared with the previous, twelve months, bringing the total to 3,840.However, attrition meant that the total number of reservists rose by just 20 to 19,310, despite a multi-million pound television and online advertising

campaign to attract more recruits to the three armed forces reserves.David Cameron has pledged to raise the number of reservists to 30,000 during the next, four years, as the regular army continues to shed soldiers (its numbers having fallen by 8,000 to just over 94,000).Commented an MoD spokesperson: "We make no apology for revising the age-requirements for ex-regular soldiers to join the reserves, and share their wealth of knowledge and expertise.

A better quality of lifeA TEAM of scientists at Britain's leading Human Performance research universities discovered that a major cause of breathlessness is the weakness of the inspiratory or breathing muscles.

Their studies showed people, who strengthen these muscles tend to feel less breathless when undertaking physical activities; this could mean walking up the stairs or doing some essential garden maintenance could feel much easier.

Specific breathing training or Inspiratory Muscle Training (IMT) involves breathing against an inspiratory load (generated by a training device), which strengthens the

inspiratory muscles in the same way that lifting a dumb-bell strengthens the biceps.

This form of training has been used extensively in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD, e.g., emphysema and chronic bronchitis) and also athletes looking to improve performance.

The concept is simple but very effective; by breathing against a resistance, the diaphragm and intercostal muscles between the ribs adapt and become stronger, resulting in some astonishing health-benefits.

Researchers find that 'vaping' can help smokers to quit

NEW research appears to undermine fears that 'vaping' will encourage non-smokers to take up the habit.

A review by the medical research group, the Cochrane Collaboration, finds that controversial electronic cigarettes, on the contrary, help those who wish to stop smoking (either to quitor by reducing the amount they consume).

Researchers from the UK and New Zealand analysed two, previous, randomised controlled trials on e-cigarettes' role in quitting, and concluded that they had beneficial effects.

They found that almost one in ten (9%) smokers who used e-cigarettes containing nicotine gave up within a year - more than double the 4% wh used nicotine-free vaporisers.

When the review's authors looked smokers using e-cigarettes who had not quit, they discovered that 36% of vaporiser-users had halved their intake of cigarettes, compared with the 28% who did not (despite being given a placebo).

Co-author, Peter Hajek, a professor of clinical psychology at Queen Mary, University of London, admitted that findings were not definitive, because the two trials included only 662 smokers.

"Both trials used electronic cigarettes with low-nicotine-delivery, and it is likely that more recent products are more effective, since previous research suggests that higher and faster nicotine-delivery facilitates treatment-effects," he said.

Commented Ann McNeill, professor of tobacco addiction at the Institute of Psychiatry at King's College, London: "While the studies included were limited in number and used e-cigarettes which are now largely obsolete, the results are clear: e-cigarettes are helping smokers to quit or substantially cut down."

LEADING a 50+ weekly, low-mobility exercise group is no sweat for Age UK mentors, Doreen (88) and Sandra (65), who have put members through their paces every Thursday at Longton Central Hall, since training in 2008.Said Sandra: "Helping older people improve their mobility and reduce the risk of falls is extremely rewarding. Our members have fun getting fit, whilst making new friends."Regular exercise boosts energy, increases confidence and self-esteem, not to mention reducing the risk of heart-disease and strokes.By offering low-cost exercise, walking groups and walking football sessions, the Ageing Well Project encourages older people to keep physically, mentally and socially active.Added Doreen: "The fact that members report significant improvement in their health and well-being through attending our exercise sessions makes my role as a group leader very worthwhile. The exercise helps my arthritis, too."With FREE training available in Spring 2015, Age UK is looking for people like Doreen and Sandra to fill

volunteer vacancies in areas, including Cobridge, Meir, Stoke, Leek Town, Biddulph Moor and Ipstones.Additionally, there are volunteer vacancies, both for walk leaders and for administrative staff (particularly data base input). For further information about our activities programme, project membership or volunteering opportunities:CONTACT: The Ageing Well Team, Age UK North Staffordshire, on (01782) 200739 or 286207.

HEALTH & WELL - BEING IN 2015Unusual beauty spray launchedA NEWLY-launched product may help millions of women around the country appear more beautiful overnight.

It is not, however, an anti-ageing moisturiser, a wonder cleanser or concealer, the latest must-have beauty product comes in a more unusual form....

We've all heard of the term, 'beauty sleep', but a recent study, published in the scientific journal, Sleep, confirmed 'officially' that a lack of sleep makes you less attractive.

Last year, researchers at Stockholm's Karolinska Institute looked into how forty people viewed subjects deprived of sleep.

Help may be at hand, however, from what could turn out to be the most effective beauty product on the market, in the form of Helps Stop Snoring Spray (which was launched in selected Boots stores and on Boots.com), and has been clinically proven to reduce snoring in 80% of users.

Helps Stop Snoring Spay contains a number of essential oils, which, in combination, offer an easy and effective way to help reduce night-

time noises.

You simply spray Helps Stop Snoring to the back of your throat before you go to bed,

where it works to help tone the soft tissues at the back of the throat - snoring often occurs when these soft tissues relax and vibrate as we breathe during sleeping.

Note: Help Stop Snoring Products use essential oils, and should not be used by pregnant or breast-feeding women.

CONGLETON IN 2015It's time to meet Lucky Eric - and the 'Bouncers'!

IT'S FRIDAY night: it's disco night - time for 'Bouncers' to come alive!

Yes, Congleton Players' first production of 2015 is the most popular, internationally-acclaimed work of playwright, John Godber (BAFTA-winning author of 'On The Piste', 'Up 'n' Under' and 'Teechers').

Come with the Players back to the '80s, and meet the bouncers - your 'friendly', neighbourhood law-enforcers (well, the law, according to them!) at Congleton's Daneside Theatre in February.

Don't mess with them, though; they may just throw you out.

If you have ever been out at night, you will know the type - black-suited and bow-tied, standing at the entrance.

Four, high-energy actors portray more than 20, different characters in one, crazy night on the town.

Meet giggly girls and lads on the make as they prepare

for their big night-out.

Later, in the tatty, glitzy glamour and flashing lights of the nightclub, follow their progress to the disco-floor, where an entire cross-

section of disco-goers, including a smooth-talking DJ, lipstick and lacquered girls, 'Hooray Henrys', the over-indulged and many more gyrate to the pulsating beat of the '80s nightclub scene.

And, so begins the journey into Friday night under the ever-watchful, ever-ready,

ever-observant - BOUNCERS!

NOTE: THE PLAY CONTAINS STRONG LANGUAGE.

The four-strong cast comprises Martin Daniel (as Lucky Eric), Andrew Tooth (Les), Daniel Masterson (Ralph) and James Hulme (Judd).

Directed by Simon Wain, 'Bouncers' can be enjoyed from Tuesday, February 3rd, to Saturday, February 7th, starting at 7.30pm.

Tickets, priced at £6 (Tuesday), £8 (Wednesday-Saturday) and £7 (concessionary), are available from Congleton Tourist Information Centre, Tel: (01260)

271095.

BRITISH BREWING INDUSTRY IS "IN EXCELLENT HEALTH", AVERS NEW REPORT

THIS country now boasts the most breweries per head of any country in the world.

That's the message from the Good Beer Guide 2015, pubished by CAMRA (the Campaign for Real Ale), which reports there are are 1,285 breweries operating in this country - one for every 50,000 people and the largest number since the 1930s and '40s.

During the past, twelve months, 170

breweries have opened in the UK, maintaining a growth-rate of over 10% per annum.

Neddless to day, nearly all new breweries are producing cask-conditioned 'real ales' as their core products, giving an even wider choice of beers for drinkers and a welcome boost to the embattled pub sector.

The guide lists breweries throughout the UK, including the 8,000-plus 'real ales' which they produce, alongside 54,940 real ale venues.

Before falling into decline, London was once one of the world's greatest brewing centres, but 2013 saw brewery numbers double.

"Real ale is the only success-story in a declining beer-market," said the guide's editor, Roger Protz (one

of CAMRA's founders).

"New breweries, making hand-crafted beers, continue to come on stream, while many, long-standing regional and family breweries are expanding with new equipment and brands."

Indeed, the continued growth across the whole of the country has been driven by small, independent breweries.

"This latest Good Beer Guide portrays a British brewing industry in excellent health," averred the managing director of the Society of Independent Brewers, Mike Brenner.

"New brewery openings over the last year take the total number of brewers in the UK to over 1,200, a figure that would have been unimaginable to readers of this guide in the 1970s."

The publication also highlights a major swing to real ale among younger imbibers, mocking the image of its aficionados as 'old fogies'.

More than a third of young people aged 18-24 have sampled real ale, and, of those, 87% say that they plan to quaff it again!

The Good Beer Guide 2015 is available for £15.99 (RRP) from all good book shops.

'A Wee Ken to Remember'NEW Vic favourite, John Shuttleworth, returns to Newcastle-under-Lyme on Wednesday, February 18th, with his latest show.

As heard on BBC Radio 4's 'John Shuttleworth's Lounge Music', our hero wanted to share memories of favourite weekends.

But, by mistake, the poster said 'wee Ken' instead of 'weekend'; so, John has to spend the evening paying homage to his next-door neighbour and solo agent - the diminutive Ken Worthington!

In his brand-new show, 'A Wee Ken to Remember', "Sheffield's funniest man" will perform classic tunes, along with newer ditties.

Tickets for the performance (commencing at 7.30pm) are priced at £19 and £20.50, and can be purchased from the New Vic Box Office or online at www.newvictheatre.org.uk

England's greatest folk musician at NewcastleLAUDED by Q Magazine as "the greatest English folk-song performer of them all", Martin Carthy will be making his first solo visit to Newcastle's New Vic Theatre on Wednesday, January 14th.

A unique singer, a ground-breaking guitarist and a master, musical innovator, Martin has (for almost 50 years) inspired generations of artists - from the likes of Bob Dylan and Paul Simon to Richard Thompson, Martin Simpson and many more - and a special night is assured.

Tickets for the performance (which starts at 7.30pm) are priced at £18.50 and £20.50 (with concessions and Under-16s Go Free), and are available from the New Vic Box Office or online at www.newvictheatre.org.uk

Were you BORN to PERFORM?WHATEVER your age, if you, your child or student is a born performer, enter the Newcastle-under-Lyme Festival for Music, Speech and Drama!

This annual event, organised by volunteers, provides excellent opportunities for ALL ages of amateur performers, and features a wide range of competition classes, with written and verbal adjudication by experts for competitors (and trophies for winners).

"We aim to provide a well-organised and enjoyable festival; a platform for amateur performers of any age age, from far and near, to demonstrate their talents," explained Publicity Officer, Steve Hughes.

The Festival with take place at Newcastle College and St. John Fisher Catholic College on Saturday, March 14th; Friday, March 20th, and Saturday, March 21st, 2015, and ENTRIES NEED TO BE IN BY MONDAY, JANUARY 26TH, 2015.

For anyone who can act, recite, play an instrument or sing, or is in a band or choir, this chance to perform in front of a live audience should not be missed.

Budding composers and poets are also catered for, with competitions to perform their own creations, or have them performed on their behalf.

Competitors are given a verbal and written adjudication by carefully-chosen and respected adjudicators of international standing, and these 'words of wisdom' should help the competitors in the development of their art.

"For the visitor, whether connected to a competitor or not, we provide a pleasant (and, at £1.50 per day), a cheap

day-out, one in which you can see and appreciate the talent of others, matching your conclusions with those of the adjudicator," said Peter Hughes.

"There is a friendly atmosphere at our festivals, and this is reflected in the favourable feedback that we receive from competitors and audience alike.

"In 2014, a total of 1,257 performers took part, and they were supported by an audience of at least an equal number of family, friends and other visitors."

Visit the event's website (www.newcastlefestival.org.uk), which gives details of the 2015 Newcastle Festival for Music, Speech and Drama, and from which the syllabus for the Festival can be read, printed or downloaded.

If no internet and printing facilities are available, contact Steve Hughes on (01782) 787935 for a printed version.

DELICIOUS DEVILRY WILL LEAVE YOU SPELLBOUND!

LAUDED as "completely enchanting" by The New York Times, John Van Druten's famous comedy, 'Bell, Book and Candle', will weave its own, idiosyncratic magic at Newcastle's New Vic Theatre in February.

Take three witches, a bewildered, young man and a rather wicked cat. Mix with a good glug of humour, stir in a dollop of desire.

The result? A deliciously dark tale of treachery and enchantment which will leave you spellbound.

Gillian Holroyd leads a charmed life. And, when her

eye falls on the man upstairs, she soon has him under her spell.

But the family is far from impressed, and gets down to some hocus-pocus of its own. It's a war of the warlocks, with a hapless human playing mortal in the middle!

What begins as an amusing game rapidly becomes more devilishly dangerous.

Torn between two worlds, Gillian is forced to answer the age-old question - is love always

worth the sacrifice?

'Bell, Book and Candle' by London-born playwright,

John Van Druten (1901-57),received its premiere on Broadway in 1950,and the 1958 film (directed by Richard Quine) starred James Stewart, Kim Novak, Jack Lemmon, Elsa Lanchester and Hermione Gingold.

Van Druten is, probably, best-known for the play, 'I Am A Camera',

based on Christopher Isherwood's 1939 short stories, 'Goodbye to Berlin'; it formed the basis of Joe Masteroff's book for the 1966 Kander and Ebb musical, 'Cabaret'.

(When 'I Am A Camera' opened on Broadway in 1951, The New York Time's Walter Kerr wrote a famous, three-word review, "Me no Leica"; however, it went on to win the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for 1951-52!).

Directed by Gwenda Hughes, 'Bell, Book and Candle' runs from Saturday, February 14th to Saturday, February 28th, at 7.30pm, with 2.15pm matinee performances on Saturdays 21st and 28th.

Tickets (priced at £13-£22, with group-discounts of £2 for parties of ten or more, £2 off for concessionaries and Under-26s Go Free) can be purchased from the New Vic Box Office on (01782) 717962, or online at www.newvictheatre.org.uk

ACHES & PAINS - IS YOUR PET AFFECTED?COLD, damp weather can unmask signs of arthritic change in dogs and cats, and, now, is a great time to take a good look at your pets and make sure they are comfortable.

Do they seem stiff or lame? Do they have difficulty getting up and lying down? Does it take a while for them to get going in the morning?

If so, your pet will benefit from a check-over to identify any problems, and work how best to treat them

The joints that are most susceptible to arthritis are those permitting limb movements - called synovial joints.

The ends of the bones that meet at these joints are covered by very smooth, articular cartilage and lubricated with synovial fluid.

In pets with arthritis, the protective cartilage is damaged and worn away, resulting in exposure of the underlying bone, causing pain and inflammation.

Secondary, 'fluffy', new bone is commonly deposited around the joint, and may be seen on X-ray.

Affected joints commonly appear stiff, swollen and painful.

Although arthritis cannot usually be cured, there are several things that The Croft Veterinary Clinic can do to help.

* WEIGHT-CONTROL: overweight pets tend to struggle far more with stiffness and arthritis than slender ones, as the extra weight puts more strain on diseased joints and weight-loss can really help.

* EXERCISE REGIMES can also make a difference. Most stiff dogs benefit from two or three,

shorter walks every day, rather than one, long one from time to time. Other forms of exercise may also be helpful, and hydrotherapy may be useful in some cases.

* FOOD SUPPLEMENTS AND MEDICATION may also be required. The Croft can can advise on appropriate food supplements, such as those containing EFAs (essential fatty acids) and glucosamine, and can prescribe anti-inflammatory

treatments, as required.

IF YOUR PET IS SHOWING ANY SIGNS OF ARTHRITIS, PLEASE CALL THE CROFT AND MAKE AN APPOINTMENT FOR A CHECK-UP TODAY.

Every guarantee honoured over 46 years!

FOR more than 40 years, Congleton Glass has taken great pride in adhering to its original ethos of good service, premier quality and excellent workmanship.

Since the family business was established in 1968, it has acquired a nonpareil reputation for providing its customers with the highest-quality windows and doors.

When the business first opened its doors 46 years ago, it comprised just one man and a single van; however, it has (deservedly) expanded to the point where it is, now, one of the busiest glazing companies in the town, serving clients not only in Cheshire, but also throughout the North-West.

As a double-bonus for readers, Congleton Glass sells the very best in windows and doors from such top-rated brands in the industry as KAT, Nova and Rockdoor, but offers them at eminently-affordable prices.

The Royle Street business, then, complements this by installing all

products to correct standards, adhering to strict guidelines on energy-efficiency and ventilation (as set out by FENSA [the Fenestration Self-Assessment Scheme]).

This insistence upon first-class products AND service has, necessarily, meant that it has outlasted numerous, other companies unable to match its sheer skill and invaluable, decades-long experience, which has allowed it to identify the kind of quality and value that will enhance and protect a client's property.

Quite simply, customers may locate cheaper products on the market, but these lack the service, support and longevity which Congleton Glass offers.

Pay a visit to Congleton Glass (located by the River Dane, close to the very heart of the town centre) and you will discover that its stock represents the very latest in window-technology, while its doors provide security, longevity and style.

All of the company's PVCu products come with a redoubtable, 10-year

warranty.

Additionally, Congleton Glass features a pleasingly-diverse range of miscellaneous services, including the supply of materials, broken-window-repairs and cut-glass and plastics.

The merits of quality workmanshipIT is self-evident that a high-quality, tailored 'finish' can add instant value and appeal to any property (be it your domicile or business).

Whether you require the fixing of a leaky tap or a complete refurbishment, it is always advisable to consult an expert (i.e., an experienced, professional plumber, carpenter, roofer, plasterer etc.).

Indeed, readers are obviously seeking a qualified tradesperson to fit your bathroom, replace decking, install a radiator, tile walls or floors, unblock drains and/or fix guttering - all carried out both reliably and accurately.

Standard painting and decorating includes wallpapering, tiling, repainting and plastering, while carpentry involves fitting doors, floors, skirting-boards, fencing, decking, joists, fascias, staircases (and much more!).

Plumbing and drainage tasks include carrying out thorough roofing-assessments (essential for older properties and those with slow leaks).

Expert roofers can advise on roof-care, and also make repairs to your roof, chimney and guttering.

Using experienced professionally-

trained carpenters/joiners make a real difference to the finish of your property.

Traditional carpentry and joinery techniques, using modern materials, ensure a permanent repair to even period properties.

Examples of carpentry repair-work undertaken include replacing floorboards and decking, securing staircase-spindles, expoxy resin repairs,

replacements and refinishing skirting-boards.

Hard-hitting video tackles drink-driving

STAFFORDSHIRE Police, in partnership with the Staffordshire Safer Roads Partnership, has launched a hard-hitting video to tackle the problem of drink-driving.

The video has been selected as part of a national campaign, co-ordinated by the Association of Chief Police Officers, to target drink- and drug-drivers in a bid to drive down fatal and serious road-traffic collisions, and protect other road-users.

The video tells the story of Harrison King, who, after a night-out, drove at speed through the centre of Uttoxeter - a ride which ended with his Ford Fiesta crashing into a house and railings, from which a metal pole crashed through his windscreen.

A severe wound to the side of his

head was one of a catalogue of injuries he suffered, requiring him to be put into an induced coma. On arrival at hospital,

it emerged that had suffered a broken cheekbone, nerve- and ear-damage, making it difficult for him to walk and even sleep for a while.

He said: "The last thing I remember is eating my tea at about 8 o'clock that evening. I don't remember how I ended up driving that night, it's just a blank."

Commented PC Jason Hughes, a Uttoxeter-based officer, who was on duty that night, saw Harrison speed by just moments before the crash, and was first on the scene: "Harrison nearly lost his life. He could have killed someone else. He narrowly missed a

Page 29: Seniors jan 2015 web

january 2015 | 29sales: 01782 461711

van coming in the opposite direction, before he crashed."

PC Hughes, who rescued Harrison from the burning car, before raising the alarm, added: "This is something I don't think I will ever forget, simply because I saw this from start to finish."

Convicted of drink-driving, Harrison was banned from driving, and had to pay court-costs and complete a community service-order at a riding school for disabled people.

Harrison stated: "I want to share my story to discourage people from drink-driving to use me as a learning-curve and not make the same mistakes I made. My advice to other people is: don't take the risk of drinking and driving. It's not if, it's when. You will get caught out."

Between 2011 and 2014, Staffordshire Police arrested nearly 5,000 drink-drivers - 95% of these were

convicted.

Said Chief Superintendent Jeff Moore: "We urge people to 'Stop and Think' - to plan their nights-out beforehand, especially sorting out how they are going to get home, appoint a designated driver that won't be drinking or pre-booking a reputable taxi firm.

"Harrison's predicament happened, because he hadn't made those plans. Thankfully, he survived and did not harm anyone else, but the next person to take the wheel under the influence may not be so lucky."

The video is available to view on the Staffordshire Police You Tube channel. Posters featuring Harrison will be distributed to all licensed premises in Staffordshire to create a stark reminder of the consequences to all those drinking and considering driving home.

Staffordshire Police is increasing uniformed and plain-clothed

officers in and around licensed premises to identify drivers that may not be fit to drive and conduct breath-tests.

The drink-drive campaign is

supported by the Staffordshire Safer Roads Partnership, which includes Staffordshire Police, Staffordshire County and Stoke-on-Trent City Councils and Staffordshire Fire and Rescue as members.

F U N E R A L S E R V I C E SOptimum advice at a time of personal griefIT is an indubitable truth that the healing process is something which each and every person in the country must experience at least once in his or her life.

For, bereavement is, quite simply, one of the great immutables in quotidian life.

It is, however, equally true that, when it impinges on our consciousness, the overwhelming majority of us are completely unprepared for the demands which it makes upon us.

It is, of course, essential that we are able to cope with the practical and emotional demands encountered at this potentially harrowing time.

The subject of death was a constant theme in conversation and thought in Victorian and Edwardian society, prior to

World War I.

But, now, in the early-21st century, it is something that is (to put it mildly) assiduously avoided.

Accordingly, when we losed a loved one (be it a partner,

relative or a very close friend), it is imperative that we acquire the support, help and care of a

reputable, well-established firm of funeral directors.

This company should possess the requisite experience of dealing with all the arrangements and, at the same time, providing optimum advice at your time of personal grief.

Its professional standards ensure that kindness, sympathy

and understanding combine to lift the inexorable burden imposed upon the bereavedas is humanly possible, providing help, comfort and support, when it is most required.

In truth, grieving is a healing process, and, whilst our sense of loss will never disappear entirely, it will diminish, as a return to normalcy (in terms of working and social life) reasserts itself.

FRIENDLY RELIABLE SERVICE EVERYTHING YOU NEED FOR

YOUR HOME.

Excellence is Martyn's trademarkMARTYN Stanyer strongly believes in offering customers a service so excellent that it would even satisfy himself!

"I treat my customers as if they were members of my own family, and I don't stand for the 'It'll Do' attitude that is prevalent in so many trades," he told us.

Moreover, his business, MS Services, offers such a wide-ranging remit in terms of home improvement (both internal and external) that it encompasses everything from changing a washer to building a house!

M.S. Services encompasses bathrooms, bedrooms, windows, doors and loft-conversions, with exemplary kitchen and bathroom work being Martyn's particular fort'e, as he utilises his wealth of experience and expertise.

However, 2013 saw his business enhanced by moving into the gardening sphere (including,

naturally, fencing).

Unsurprisingly, MS Services enjoys an abundance of customers' recommendations!

Of course, caring genuinely about your clients has its positive aspects.

"If you treat customers well, you have them for life; they start out as a customer and end up as a friend," commented sole proprietor, Martyn, who is very flexible in his approach to clients.

"I don't give the usual, massive quotes (which are often unfairly inflated to the tune of about 20%), with the result that most established customers never ask for a price. Also, they can buy their own materials, using my own trade-discounts."

MS Services operates over a wide radius, taking in Staffordshire (including the whole of Stoke-on-Trent) and parts of neighbouring Cheshire.

IN ADDITION, MARTYN'S WEBSITE WILL SOON BE AVAILABLE!
