For mature people who enjoy life!

&

THE answer is that there are MANY reasons why you should make a Will!

If you die without a Will (Intestate), all your money and possessions (your Estate) will be distributed, according to strict, legal rules and regulations; called the Laws of Intestacy, these distribute an Estate in a way the deceased would not have wanted - sometimes with disastrous results!

And the time to write your Will is (without doubt) NOW!

There may be plenty of life in you yet, but accidents and illness have absolutely no respect for age; also, bear in mind that a modern Will is written in such a way that it shouldn’t need much changing, so it’s not something you have to think about often (only in the event of a major change in circumstances [such as marriage, birth of a first child or divorce]).

If you die Intestate, your circumstances will fall into one of the following categories: MARRIED, COHABITING and SINGLE.

MARRIED: In the event of the death of a married person, the Intestacy rules divide the Estate into shares, with a share going to the surviving husband or wife (the spouse).

The popular belief that a spouse automatically inherits everything is SIMPLY NOT TRUE, because your nearest blood-relations (children, parents, brothers, sisters etc.) are also entitled to take a share under the Intestacy Rules, and the spouse’s share could be the smallest one.

COHABITING: If you live with another person unmarried (including single-sex couples), with respect to finance and inheritance, you do not have the same rights as a married person, so the following information applies more to you:-

SINGLE: If a singleton dies without a Will, the line of Inheritance can be complicated, and can often involve relatives you have never even seen! It will take months (possibly even years) to sort out your affairs, and the solicitors who sort this out will charge THOUSANDS OF POUNDS for their work - money, which for the sake of making a Will (£89), you could have left your children!

Professionally Written WillsWriting a Will may be something you’ve been thinking about for many years and the reasons for a having a Will are many but if for no other reason a Will could save those you leave behind a small fortune in Solicitor’s fees!

A Property Trust Will can be your saviourUNSURPRISINGLY, few of us have considered what the effect might be on our savings and investments, or even our home, if (as is most probable) we ever needed residential care later in life.

Most people assume that we shall pass on our assets to our children or other relatives in due course; yet, this may not always be the case, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect our assets from being taken to pay care home fees.

In recent years, it has become increasingly apparent that the State will only provide for those with little or no savings or assets; everyone else is expected to pay at least part (if not all) of his or her own costs.

Currently, anyone with assets in excess of £22,250 (this figure includes the family home) is not eligible for any state help with his or her residential care fees; if you have more than £12,000, but less than £22,500, you are only entitled to partial assistance.

The net result is that anyone, who owns his or her own home, is unlikely to receive assistance, even if they do not possess large amounts of cash-assets.

Even if you DON'T have the cash readily available, the Department of Social Security can still place a charge against the family home, which enables it to recover the monies owing, when the property is eventually sold!

Bear in mind that average residential care fees start in the region of £500 per week, so it is clear how quickly assets can be eroded.

The DSS has often become the sole, outright owner of the family home after the death of an elderly parent, who had been living in a nursing home.

However, there is a solution - in the form of Property Trust wills

A 'Property Trust' is based around three, basic elements: the basis on which you own your property, the Trust terms and your Wills, which contain the Trust investment.

The Property Trust can only be created, while both partners remain alive and the property must be owned as Tenants in Common (the Trust instrument is, then, included in both Wills, but does not come into force

until the death of the first).

Upon the first death, their share of the property (typically 50%) is placed into the Trust to be adminstered by the Trustees nominated in the Will, and this, usually, includes the surviving spouse.

The Will also specifies who is to be the ultimate beneficiary of this share in the property, and the Trustee's duty is to protect the property for the beneficiaries' benefit.

The surviving spouse, under the Trust's terms, has the right to remain living in the property for the rest of his or her life; on the death of the second spouse, the Trust comes to an end, and the

property passes absolutely to the beneficiaries.

CONTENTSOCTOBER 201511 The eagerly-awaited return of the top-class Soul and Motown singer, Diane Shaw, and her fabulous, seven-piece band to Baddeley Green WMC takes place on Friday, October 9th. Diane is one of the country's most experienced, live performers, with her own, loyal following, and was once called "the UK's most famous, unknown singer"! Having toured Britain and overseas for almost 20 years, she has performed in front of more audiences than chart artists today, supporting various Soul artists, such as Motown legends, Martha Reeves, Brenda Holloway and Chris Clark; Northern Soul icons, Tommy Hunt, Sidney Barnes and Geno Washington; and Disco legends, Sister Sledge and George McCrae.

13 New Vic favourites, Northern Broadsides, return to the Newcastle theatre-in-the-round with a beautiful and beguiling love story, 'The Winter's Tale' by William Shakespeare. Running from Tuesday, November 3rd, to Saturday, November 7th, the play is a rich, romantic fable of jealousy, love and redemption. King Leontes falsely accuses his Queen of infidelity. He proclaims their new-born daughter a bastard, and condemns the innocent to death. But the child, Perdita, survives. You will be transported from the dark Court of a jealous king to the bright sunshine of a rustic festival, where country girls sing saucy songs and a Prince can utter marriage vows to a lowly shepherd's daughter.

14 It's that time of the year again! On Saturday, October 31st, many readers will be celebrating Hallowe'en, marking the the definitive end of the Summer (with the onset of the season of darkness, cold, withering and dread). It's period of ghosts, ghouls and things (most explosively) that 'go bump in the night'! Hallowe'en (or All Hallows Eve, to give it its correct, religious nomenclature) was, for our ancestors far more than an opportunity to dress up in appositely- ghoulish costumes. It was 'the most haunted night of the year', summoning up images of dread and danger! Nowadays, very few of us anticipate the spirits of the next year's dead processing through our local churchyard at midnight; nevertheless, witches and supernatural beings are still remembered (and impersonated) by bands of disguised children roaming the streets with turnip-lanterns, knocking on doors to beg for sweets and 'pennies'.

Auto Enrolment - Is Your Business Ready?WE have all seen the Government's advertising campaign, 'We're All In', delivered by celebrities we all recognise, and many employers will have received a letter from the Pensions Regulator asking to appoint a contact, and explaining the date that their business is required to stage for auto enrolment, but, often, the staging-date is many months in the future and the letter gets filed away to be revisited at some time nearer the event - first mistake!

Auto Enrolment is compulsory for the vast majority of businesses which have employees and who operate a PAYE scheme. More than 1.3 million businesses will go through the auto enrolment process during the next, three years; yet, many employers are being slow to realise exactly what their responsibilities under the new regime.

On a practical level, employers must nominate a contact, develop initial plans, evaluate their workforce and ensure that their payroll software is able to deal adequately with auto enrolment: it must be able to make the appropriate deductions from each, qualifying employee's wages on a weekly, or monthly, basis, and generate information to be uploaded to the business's chosen pension provider.

The employer needs to review any existing pension arrangements, and, if necessary, source a suitable auto enrolment-compliant pension scheme which, given that, already, the number of pension providers offering these facilities to smaller employers is already quite restricted, will only become more difficult, as time goes by. The employer must also decide the basis on which he or she is going to calculate contributions, a decision which can result in considerable, additional costs to the business, if care is not taken to assess properly the business's pay structures, and keep their employees fully-informed of their option during the process.

The additional costs and administration burden involved for the employer can be significant, as can the potential

Pension Regulator imposed fines for non-compliance. This, combined with the huge volume of businesses going through the auto enrolment process in a reatively-short period of time is going put extreme pressure on service providers. For this reason, our auto enrolment team, here at Walletts Chartered Certificated Accountants, are advising all businesses which approach us for advice to take steps to ensure that they have an auto enrolment facility fully-researched and confirmed at least six months before their staging-date.

Professional advice (especially around the areas of potential postponement and contribution options) can save businesses significant amounts of money. During the last, two years, Wallets, at our offices in Hanley, Biddulph and Rugeley, have developed a speciaist team, working with a national provider of quality auto enrolment advice to assist local businesses in making sure that they get the process right. We have, through our specialist advisors and auto enrolment-compliant payroll bureau, helped many

businesses to meet their legal obligations under auto enrolment and successfully to install, operate and administer their auto enrolment schemes.

Walletts now offer all businesses free, no-obligation auto enrolment advice clinics at our Hanley office, which explain auto enrolment, evaluate your business's individual needs and provide employers with an indication of the potential costs involved. To book a place, please call Keith Salt or David Bould on 01782 212326, or, alternatively, email us at [email protected]

DO YOU NEED A LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY

If you ‘lose capacity’ all of your financial arrangements will be ‘locked’. even those you held jointly. your bank and other institutions have no choice but follow the rules mCA and deny your spouse/family access to your accounts.

to ‘unlock’ your accounts, and also be able to sign and act on your behalf someone has to either produce a previously arrange LPA or make an application to the Court of Protection.

An application to the Court is neither cheap (£2,000 to £3,000 are typical) or quick (3-4 months) and this is no guarantee of success.

the Court may reject your families application and instead appoint a local deputy (a local solicitor) who will take over all of your finances.

From your estate, the deputy will deduct all court fees as well as his own fees and expenses, which in some cases has been known to run into £1000’s

DO YOU WANT ONE?Erase the the stress of coping with bills & accounts!

THE vast majority of us do not like to think about the possibility of losing our mental capacity, and consider how we would cope with our financial affairs in that eventuality.

It is, therefore, eminently prudent to look to the future and plan ahead, in order to ease the potential burden on your relative, should this occur - by creating a Lasting Power of Attorney.

An LPA is is a legal document that allows you to choose other people whom you wish to make decisions on your behalf, including a time when they you lack the requisite, mental capacity to do so.

It is crucial that an LPA is 'completed' while you are still mentally capable, well before you require it.

There are TWO types of LPA:-

* Property and financial affairs (allowing an attorney to make decisions about paying bills, dealing with the bank, collecting benefits, selling your house etc.).

* Health and welfare (allowing decisions on treatment, care, medication, where you live etc.).

An LPA allows you to plan in advance the decisions you want to be made on your behalf if/when you lose the capacity to make them yourself; the people you want to make these decisions; how you want the people to make these decisions.

Having an LPA is a safe way of maintaining control over decisions made for you because: 1) It has to be registered with the Office of

the Public Guardian before it can be used (if someone else tries to register if you and your attorney[s] will be able to make an objection); 2) You choose someone to provide a 'certificate' confirming that you understand the significance and purpose of it; 3) You can choose 'people to be told' about your LPA

when it is registered (so that they have an opportunity to raise concerns); 4) Your signature, and the signatures of your chosen attorneys must be witnessed; 5) From a legal perspective, your attorney(s) must follow the code of Practice of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 - if

they don't always act in your best interests, the OPG can step in, and your attorneys(s) may be held accountable; 6) The OPG provides helpful support and advice.

Fireworks Display will be setting the sky alight!

Sponsored by Madeley Heath Motors, in association with Signal 1 Radio, and run completely by a group of dedicated volunteers to raise money for local organisations, this event is the biggest of its kind in the region.

It is taking place, once again, at Betley Court Farm on the A531 in the charming village of Betley on the Staffordshire/Cheshire border, with the natural amphitheatre of Betley Mere parkland providing a perfect venue for viewing the many and varied attractions.

With a chill in the air, wrap up warm, put your Wellingtons on, then head to one of the finest bonfire and fireworks displays in the whole of the country.

THE GATES OPEN AT 4PM, EXPECT A LOT OF TRAFFIC, SO COME EARLY!

Starting at 7.30pm, fireworks from Pain's Fireworks (one of Europe's leading, professional display companies) will provide

an amazing, breathtaking aerial display - once the sky has developed velvet blackness!

Stanworth's Funfair is, once again, supporting the event, with giant rides for the brave and gentle ones for the young, and there will also be plenty of aromatic food-stalls, roast pork, beefburgers, hot-dogs, chips and ice-cream.

All of this comes at the terrific, value-for-money admission-charge of £3 for children (under-14s) and £7 for adults; youngsters under the age of five come free, and, don't forget, there's FREE parking, too!

There'll be fun for ALL the family, as this great tradition is kept alive!

Well-supported event continues to grow

THE sun shone on the morning of Saturday, August 1st, for the 158th Betley Show, reports Sebastian Daly, of Pool Farm Veterinary Surgery, one of the event's main sponsors.

"The showground quickly filled up with people enjoying the various attractions of what is

becoming an increasingly-rare, traditional country show," he tells us.

"This year saw live cookery-demonstrations, the internationally-acclamed Electro Swing Circus. horticultural and agricultural displays, falcontry and traditional craft-workings amongst other attractions and displays."

Donkey-rides were another addition to this show in 2015.

Betley Show continues to grow on traditional roots, and is run by Betley and District Horticultural Society, a group of dedicated voulunteers who endeavour to continue to improve the event, with all its heritage.

"The show was well-supported, even if the rain later on deterred a few who missed out on the annual egg-throwing competition," added Sebastian.

Readers wishing to help Sebastian in raising funds for the Children's Liver Disease Foundation can visit the website, http://www.justgiving.com/sebdaly2015

All support for this very worthy charity, however large or small, is greatly appreciated.

Diane sings Soul & Motown classicsFRIDAY, October 9th, sees the eagerly-awaited return to Baddeley Green WMC of top-class Soul and Motown singer, Diane Shaw, and her fabulous, seven-piece band!

One of the country's most experienced live performers, with her own, loyal following, Diane (once called 'the UK's most famous unknown singer') has recorded her first album, since her last visit twelve months ago.

Having toured Britain and overseas for nearly 20 years, she has performed in front of more audiences than chart artists today, supporting such artists as Motown legends, Martha Reeves,

Brenda Holloway and Chris Clark; Northern Soul icons, Tommy Hunt, Sidney Barnes and Geno Washington; Disco legends, Sister Sledge and George McCrae; and Grammy-winning jazz legends, Kirk Whalum and Peter White.

The soul and spirit of the great divas (Gladys Knight, Aretha Franklin, Dians Ross and The Supremes) runs through Diane, and music with the classic sounds of a time gone-by is freshly delivered to a new audience.

In addition to premier venues, theatres and festivals throughout the UK, she has performed in Cyprus, Dubai, France, Spain and Turkey.

Tickets, priced at £8, are available from Baddeley Green WMC on (01782) 541246/07794-552342.

Sounds of SeanPOPULAR vocalist, Sean Haven, will be entertaining at Kidsgrove Labour Club on Saturday, October 24th.

Sean is appearing, courtesy of MJE Entertainment Agency, which can be telephoned on 01785 824824 (Tel) or by emailing: [email protected]

creative force, Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, who unveiled a stunning, new tableau on the Cliffs at the north end of the display.Drawing upon the story of 'Alice in Wonderland', the design features an enchanting water garden, an eight-feet-long bridge and a version of the Mad Hatter's Tea Party, featuring a very unusual guest in the shape of Harry The Hound, the mascot of the tableau sponsor, Houndshill Shopping Centre.2015 will see yet more innovative designs, as the Illuminations' offer is refreshed and reinvented for

yet another generation of visitors.Holidaymakers' first experience of the Illuminations was back in 1879, when just EIGHT arc-lamps lit up the seafront in what was, then, descibed as "artificial sunshine".The principle might be the same, but the sheer scale, style and professionalism of the fantastic, free show make it something very different! It now features miles of festoons and tableaux, creating one of the most iconic sights in British popular culture. 2015's Illuminations run from Friday, September 4th, to Sunday, November 8th, and further details are available by visiting the website: www.visitblackpool.com/illuminations

Forgiveness, harmony & happinessNEW Vic favourite, Northern Broadsides, returns to the Newcastle theatre-in-the-round with a beautiful and beguiling love story from the Bard of Avon.

'The Winter's Tale' is a joyous, heart-warming work, culminating in forgiveness, harmony and happiness, performed by a charismatic cast of actor-musicians.

The play is a rich, romantic fable of jealousy, love and redemption, in which KIng Leontes falsely accuses his Queen of infidelity.

He proclaims their new-born daughter a bastard, and condemns the innocent to death, but the child, Perdita, survives.

Readers will be transported from the dark Court of a jealous king to the bright sunshine of a rustic festival, where country girls sing saucy songs and a Prince can utter marriage vows to a lowly shepherd's daughter - and we believe it!

"The best Shakespeare around" enthused The Independent on Sunday about Northern Broadsides.

Directed by Conrad Nelson, this new production of 'A Winter's Tale' runs at the New Vic from Tuesday, November 3rd, to Saturday, November 7th, at 7.30pm, with a 2.15pm matinee performance on Saturday 7th.

Tickets (priced at £13-£22, with group-discounts of £2 for parties of ten or more, £2 off for concessionaries and Under-26s Go Free) can be purchased from the New Vic Box Office on (01782) 717962,or online at www.newvictheatre.org.uk

23 High Street, Biddulph

FABULOUS 'FRIGHT NIGHT'!ON Saturday, October 31st, myriad readers will be celebrating (with gusto) the cultural phenomenon, known colloquially as Hallowe'en.Traditionally, this marks the definitive end of the Summer, with all that this entails: the onset of the season of cold, darkness, withering and dread!Hallowe'en (or All Hallows Eve, to give it its correct, religious nomenclature) was, for our ancestors, far more than an opportunity to dress up in appositely-ghoulish costumes - it was 'the most haunted night of the year', summoning up images of dread and danger!Nowadays, very few of us anticipate the spirits of the next year's dead processing through our local churchyard at midnight; nevertheless, witches and supernatural beings are still remembered (and impersonated) by bands of disguised children roaming the streets with turnip-lanterns, knocking on doors to beg for sweets and 'pennies'.In fact, some areas of Britain (especially North Yorkshire and the North-East of England), the custom of 'Punky Night', deriving from

either pumpkin or 'punky' (meaning a lighted taper) still prevails. We have (inevitably) been invaded by American cultural imperialism, in the form of 'Trick or Treat' (remember the obnoxious brats in John Carpenter's movie, 'Hallowe'en'?), but this is, in any case, initially emanates from Britain (where it is known as 'Mischief Night').Our ancestors believed that Hallowe'en was a night when spirits walked the earth and could be seen by prophetic (and hyper-imaginative!) folk.It was an evening when it was expedient to carry out all kinds of superstitious practices to ward off the powers of darkness and bring good fortune. This, of course, harks back to Roman times, when Celtic druids used their powers to protect their brethren from the imaginative from the rampaging God of Death (come to claim his victims!). The last day of the year in the old Celtic calendar, it was also, traditionally, the night of all witches, before All Saints' Day (November 1st), when the Christians retaliated with a general celebration of all their faith's martyrs.Five days later, on Thursday, November 5th, comes Guy Fawkes Night; however, bonfires were also, once, associated with Hallowe'en!Fire was thought to the great deterrent to the powers of darkness, and, so, in olden times, bonfires were lit, and farmworkers paraded around fields with flaming torches, chanting rhymes which were believed to have the capacity to drive off malevolent creatures, such as devils and hobgoblins, and human agents, like witches and warlocks, from harming next year's crops. Now, that's something to consider during Hallowe'en 'fright

nights' and 2015's impressive firework-displays!

1ST ANNIVERSARY FOR JENNIE & MATTHEW!'MINE hosts', Jennie and Matthew, have plenty to celebrate soon - and so do their many regulars!

For, the popular couple are marking their first anniversary at The Regent, Fenton, on Tuesday, October 6th, and their experience in-charge of their first pub has, indeed, been a happy one.

"It's been good; the pub was run down, and we have built it up again," explained licensee, Jennie, adding: "We're getting there!"

As part of the celebrations, The Regent is presenting a special performance by Oasis tribute, So Oasis, on Friday 16th, starting at 9pm.

Top-class live entertainment is already a regular attraction at the Old Whieldon Road venue,

with Jennie and Matthew offering groups (rock, tributes etc.) most Saturday evenings, plus perennially-popular discos on Friday nights and Poker Nights each Thursday.

"We have people following the bands to our pub from all parts of Staffordshire, including Wolverhampton," Jennie told us.

Running The Regent is a 'labour of love' for the couple, because it was previously their 'local'.

"Being a licensee is something I've wanted to do since I pulled my first pint, when I was working here as an 18-year-old," said Jennie.

Forthcoming attractions include a Hallowe'en fancy-dress party on Saturday, October 31st; a performance by group, Southbound, on Boxing Day; and discos on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.

The Punch Taverns hostelry majors in traditional, cask-conditioned beers, with acclaimed 'real ale', Marston's Pedigree (ABV 4.5%),

as its regular brew, complemented by rotating 'guest beers'.

Naturally, a full range of drinks is offered, and 'house-doubles' (whisky, brandy, vodka) come at a mere £2.50 (£2.90 with additives [lemonade, coke etc.]).

Regulars and visitors can enjoy traditional pub-games like crib, darts and pool, and all the big games are available, via Sky Sports.

Commemorations of VE and VJ DaysTHIS year occasioned the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, with commemorations of VE ('Victory in Europe') Day on Friday, May 8th, and VJ ('Victory over Japan') Day on Saturday, August 15th.

On April 30th, 1945, Adolf Hitler committed suicide in Berlin, and, eight

days later, the Germany surrendered to the Allies, bringing the hostilities in Europe to an end.

Under new president, Harry S. Truman, the USA dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima (on August 6th) and Nagasaki (August 9th), forcing Japan finally to surrender that month.

"We have resolved to endure the unendurable and suffer what is insufferable," declared Emperor

Hirohito in his broadcast to the nation, on accepting the Allied terms of surrender.

The year began with the Germans defeated by Allied forces advancing through France.

The Colmar Pocket was an area in the Vosges Mountains, where the German 17th Army was trapped by the French taking

Mulhouse and US troops capturing Strasbourg during the preceding November.

Both French and American forces set about clearing the area in January, 1945; numbers of German troops were able to escape across the Rhine into friendly territory, but they left some 36,000 casualties behind them.

In February, the Allies attached the Reichswald, a German state forest, situated around Cleve, close to the Dutch border and about 15 miles west of Nijmegen, between the Waal and Maas rivers.

During the Winter of 1944-45, the Germans released the sluices on these rivers, so that the areas north and

south of the forest were flooded and impassable.

As part of the advance into Germany, the 2nd Canadian Corps and the British 30th Corps were required to advance through this area during February.

Unable to manoeuvre due to the floods, the attack was preceded by an immense artillery-barrage, over 6,000 tons of shells being fired on the first day of the onslaught.

In spite of the difficult terrain, the attack went well, and

took the initial objectives, after which German resistance stiffened and it was not until February 21st that the entire area was cleared.

Commenting on his tactics in the Reichswald, General Sir Brian Horrocks wrote: "There was no room for manoeuvre and no scope for cleverness. I had to blast my way through three defensive systems, the centre of which was the Siegfried Line."

The principal obstacle in the Allies advance into Germany was to cross the river Rhine, and, in March, the first crossing was a bridge at Nijmegen in Holland, acquired as a by-product of the previous year's Arnhem operation, and held by the Canadian Army.

The US 3rd Army, under General

George Patton, then, crossed near Mainz on March 21st.

The main crossings were planned to give access to the Ruhr, in order to

threaten Germany's industrial base.

On March 23rd, the British crossed at Wesel and the Americans near Rheinberg; both these crossings were

preceded by heavy artillery and air-bombardment of the German side, parachute-landings to secure bridgeheads, and preliminary attacks by British commando and US Ranger forces.

The same month of 1945 saw the last, major German offensive on the Eastern Front, when the 2nd Army and 5th SS Panzer attacked the Soviet 3rd Ukrainian Front at Lake Balaton on March 3rd, both to pre-empt a threatened Russian assault and also to safeguard Hungarian oilfields.

The Germans advanced some 20 miles into Soviet lines, but a Russian counter-attack,on

'Our commitment to you is second-to-none'THAT is the promise made by this Crewe-based, high-quality care-provider.

Appositely-named Betamindes offers specialist day-care in its specifically-designed bungalow for people of all ages experiencing memory-problems.

Its domiciliary staff will assist with all the daily activities which aren't as easy as they used to be in your own home.

Whether help is needed for one hour up to 24 hours a day, staff are available to assist seven days a week (including weekends and holidays).

Indeed, Betamindes' commitment to you is 'second-to-none', and includes both personal care and home-help services, in addition to companionship.

Day care at Betamindes gives individuals the opportunity to meet others in a relaxed homely setting (its bungalow is situated in a splendid position, integrated within the local community of Wistaston and within easy reach of Crewe, Nantwich and surrounding areas).

"We offer a diverse range of occupational activities, which stimulate, engage and enable the individual to recognise his or her potential and regain and maintain confidence, positive image and social skills,"

explained a spokesperson.

"Engaging in the activity is more important than the end-result."

Located at 1a, Rope Lane, Wistaston, Betamindes provides a range of non-medical services for people who want to live independently, but find everyday-living activities not as easy as they used to be.

Examples of the extensive list of services provided include companionship, personal care, medication-reminders, meal-preparation, light housekeeping, local transportation and convalescence and respite care.

All Betamindes' staff complete a thorough training-programme, aimed specifically at continuously improving every aspect of the service which they provide.

This comprises enhanced criminal bureau check; personal introductions to carers by management; and carers matched to your needs.

Betamindes also conducts regular quality assurance visits to ensure the relationship with your carer is meeting (and exceeding) expectations.

March 16th, routed the Hungarian 3rd Army which was guarding the Germans' left-flank.

This left the German units exposed, and the operation was hastily halted, with them falling back, after losing

more than 40,000 troops and 500 tanks and assault-guns.

In April, the Argenta Gap was a heavily-defended strip of dry land, between Lake Comacchi and the Lombardy marshes in northern Italy, blocking the rpute to the Lombardy plain and the North-East of the country.

The British 5th Corps used amphibious, armoured vehicles to outflank the German positions and breach the Axis lines, allowing the 6th Armoured Division to pass through the gap in the final Allied advance in Italy.

Across the globe, during the war in the Pacific, US forces captured the Japanese-held island of Iwo Jima, in the Bonin group, about 900 miles south of Tokyo, following intense fighting during February-

March, 1945.

Fortified by the Japanese, Iwo Jima held two airfields (with a third under construction), and was a valuable, strategic target for American forces, since it would provide a station for land-based bombers to raid Japan's mainland.

It was assaulted by US Marines on February 19th, after a prolonged, air and naval bombardment.

The 22,000 Japanese troops resisted fanatically, but the island was finally

secured on March 16th; US casualties came to 6,891 killed and 18,700 wounded, while only 212 of the Japanese garrison survived.

This was followed by another, hard-fought operation (lasting from April 1st to June 21st), when the Americans captured Okinawa, the principal island of the Japanese Ryukyo

Islands in the West Pacific.

During the invasion, more than 150,000 Okinawans (mainly civilians) died - many massacred by Japanese forces - and there were 47,000 American military casualties (including 12,000 dead) and 60,000 Japanese (only a few hundred survived as prisoners); the USA returned the island to Japan in 1972.

May, 1945, saw the only paratroop operation of the British Burma Campaign, involving Elephant Point, a peninula commanding the the

sea-entrance to Rangoon.

The 2nd/3rd Gurkha Parachute Battalion dropped at Elephant Point, eliminated the Japanese defences, thus clearing the way for an amphibious landing in Rangoon by the 26th Indian Division.

Surrender at Lüneburg HeathAT Lüneburg Heath (to the east of Hamburg), Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery accepted the unconditional surrender of the German forces in the Netherlands, in North-West Germany

(including all islands), Denmark, and all naval ships in these areas on May 4th, 1945.The capitulation preceded the end of World War II in Europe, and was signed in a

carpeted tent at Montgomery's headquarters on Timeloberg hill at Wendisch Evern.Lüneburg had been captured by by British forces on April 18th, 1945, with Montgomery establishing his HQ within a villa at Häcklingen.A German delegation arrived there by car on May 3rd, having been sent by Gross Admiral Karl Dönitz, who had been nominated President and Supreme Commander of the German Armed Forces by Adolf Hitler in his last will and testament on April 29th.Dönitz was aware of the Allied occupation-zone, intended for Germany, from a plan that had fallen into German hands. He, therefore, hoped that protracted, partial and local surrender negotiations might buy time for troops and refugees in the east to seek shelter from the Red Army, whilst holding a pocket to provide sanctuary on the west bank of the River Elbe.

Dönitz did not think it was appropriate to negotiate personally with a Field Marshal, since he had become the head of state, following the death of 'The Führer'; he, therefore, sent the delegation, comprising General Kinzel and Rear Admiral Wagner, and headed by the Commander-in-Chief of the German Navy, Admiral Hans-Georg von Friedeburg,Montgomery refused an initial offer to surrender Army Group Vistula, which was being cut off to the east by the Red Army, and demanded the unconditional surrender of all forces on his northern and western

flanks. The Germans stated that they did not have the authority to accept Montgomery's terms; however, they did agree to return to their HQ to obtain permission from Dönitz. They returned the next day at 18.00 with an

additional delegate (Colonel Fritz Poleck) representing the Oberkommando der Wermacht (the German armed forces high command).Von Friedeburg was ushered into Montgomery's command caravan for confirmation that they were ready to sign. For the surrender ceremony, Montgomery sat at the head of a table with an army blanket draped over it, and two BBC microphones in front of him; he, then,

called on each delegate in turn to sign the instrument of surrender document at 18.30.The surrender ceremony was filmed by British Pathé News, and recorded for broadcast on radio by the BBC, with a commentary by the Australian war correspondent, Chester Wilmot. The American CBS correspondent, Bill

Downs, was awarded the National Headliner's Club Award for his broadcast coverage of the surrender after months of following Montgomery's campaign.Downs described the surrender thus: "When Monty

entered the tent, the Germans snapped to attention like puppets. He put on his spectacles, took up the papers and said: 'I will now read out the terms of the surrender.'"The Germans sat like statues, not a

flicker of any kind of emotion on their faces. Solemnly, but with a note of triumph in his voice, Montgomery read the terms of surrender. And, then, one by one, the Germans signed."Admiral von Friedeburg went on to sign the German Instrument of Surrender preparatory to the ending of World War II in Europe on May 7th at Reims, in France, and signed again on May 8th with the Supreme

High Command of the Red Army, French and US representatives, in Berlin.

OUT & ABOUT in 2015

RICHARD Stacey, Emma Manton, Terenia Edwards, Stephen Billington, Russell Dixon and Elizabeth Boag in a scene from

'Hero's Welcome'. Photos: Tony Bartholomew.

An Ayckbourn world premiere!ALAN Ayckbourn's 79th play, 'Hero's Welcome', is enjoying a world premiere at the New Vic Theatre, Newcastle, in October.

This is a real privilege for the local theatre-in-the-round, since most of the most-performed, living, English dramatist's works are first presented at home base in Scarborough, the Stephen Joseph Theatre, and, then, because of its special relationship with this great writer, at the New Vic.

Seventeen years ago, war hero, Murray, fled the neighbourhood under something of a cloud.

Moreover, certain local folk have long memories - not least Alice, the mayor, whom he left standing at the altar.

Indeed, once the the welcome flags have stpped waving, few of his friends seem particularly happy to see him back.

Murray's declared intention of staying put and settling down with his new bride threatens to stir up all sorts of old rivalries and resentments.

Suddenly, the couple, in search of some peace, find themselves once more in the firing-line.

"'Hero's Welcome' is about the prodigal son, Murray, coming back to his home town," said the dramatist. "He's one of my anti-heroes, really; a squaddie who has all the good qualities that I like, although he has got trapped in his early days by the machinations of sexual politics, and ran away at the altar.

"It explains the male rivalry between Murray and an old friend, Brad, who is fiercely competitive and will go to any lengths to win."

Ayckbourn was described by The Wall Street Journal as "a playwright of real stature, one of the very best we have".

Directed by the playwright, 'Hero's Welcome' runs at the New Vic from Thursday, October 8th, to Saturday, October 24th, at 7.30pm, with a 2.15pm matinee performance on Saturday 24th.

The play is running in combination with Ayckbourn's much-earlier work, 'Confusions'.

Tickets are priced at £13-£22 (with group-discounts of £2 for parties of ten or more, £2 off for concessionaries and Under-26s Go Free), and can be purchased from the New Vic Box Office on (01782) 717962,or online at www.newvictheatre.org.uk

Both Admiral von Friedeburg and General Kinzel committed suicide on May 23rd.After the war, a monument was erected by the British on what they now call Victory Hill. It was dismantled in 1958, and rebuilt at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst.Today, the spot lies in an out-

of-bounds military area, and is inaccessible to the public. In 1995, another monument was erected on the edge of the Timeloberg. outside the restricted area. The last survivor of the negotiation was one of Montgomery's interpreter, Derek Knee, who died, aged 91, in 2014.

Meet the scaffolders from hell!!ONE of the country's most popular playwrights, John Godber returns to the New Vic Theatre, Newcastle, in October, with his scorching, new comedy.

In 'Poles Apart'. two worlds collide, when the scaffolders from hell descend upon a quiet theatre.

Phil, Fat Glen and Polish Jan deliver a breathless rant of life, art and sausage sarnies, amid desperate efforts to mend the leaking roof.

When they race off to their next job, leading lady, Abi, and theatre manager, Grahame, unleash their real feelings about the men with hard hats.

Uncompromising and unflinching, this visually exciting world premiere takes a deliriously funny look at life from the top of a 'scaff' tower - and it's never over until the fat man sings!

Lauded by The Guardian as "one of the unsung heroes of British theatre", John Godber is the acclaimed author of such works as 'Bouncers', 'Teechers', 'On the Piste' and 'Up 'N' Under'.

Directed by the dramatist himself, 'Poles Apart' is a John Godber Company and Theatre Royal Wakefield production, and runs at the New Vic from Tuesday, October 27th, to Saturday, October 31st, at 7.30pm, with a 2.15pm matinee performances on Saturday.

Tickets (priced at £13-£22, with group-discounts of £2 for parties of ten or more, £2 off for concessionaries and Under-26s Go Free) can be purchased from the New Vic Box Office on (01782) 717962,or online at www.newvictheatre.org.uk

Canine saviours!STOKE-on-Trent-based voluntary group and registered charity, Animal Lifeline, was founded almost 40 years ago.

Its purpose is to save abandoned and unwanted dogs and puppies, and, then, find them new homes and loving owners.

Each year, the charity rescues and re-homes around 300 canines, and has saved more than 1,000 over the years; it always has at least 100 dogs in its Serendipity Kennels, awaiting re-homing.

It never has any dogs put down (unless on veterinary grounds), and those that cannot be found new homes are kept in the sanctuary as part of the Animal Lifeline 'family'.

Normally re-homing dogs only in North Staffordshire and South Cheshire, the charity is self-supporting, and relies on its own fund-raising efforts and (much-appreciated) public donations to maintain its vital activities.

Animal Lifeline's work can only be achieved through your generosity, either be volunteering to help it, giving goods or via donation (enquiries about which can be made on 07790-079025 [9am-5pm, Monday-Friday]).

5 Security, longevity AND style!FOR 47 years, Congleton Glass Co Ltd has taken great pride in adhering to its original ethos of good service, premier quality and excellent workmanship.

Since the family business was founded in 1968, it has acquired a nonpareil reputation for providing its customers with the highest-quality windows and doors (including top-rated brands like KAT, Nova and Rockdoor) at eminently-affordable prices.

The Royle Street-based company, then, installs all products to correct standards, adhering to strict guidelines on energy-efficiency and ventilation (as set out by FENSA [the Fenestration Self-Assessment Scheme]).

Originally comprising just one man and a single van, it is, now, one of the busiest glazing companies in the town, serving clients not only in Cheshire, but also throughout the North-West.

The business’s insistence upon first-class products AND service has, of necessity, meant that it has outlasted numerous, other companies unable to match its sheer skill and invaluable, decades-long experience, which has allowed it to identify the quality and values that will enhance and protect a client’s property.

Quite simply, customers may located cheaper products on the market, but these lack the service, support and longevity which Congleton Glass offers.

Pay a visit to the company (located by the River Dane, close to the town centre), and you will discover that its stock represents the very latest in window-technology, while its doors provide security, longevity and style.

All its PVCu products come with a redoubtable, 10-year warranty.

As an additional bonus, Congleton Glass features a pleasingly-diverse range of miscellaneous services, including the supply of materials, broken-window-repairs and cut-glass and plastics.

The folk-rock legends are back!"DON'T miss them..." enthused The Independent about folk-rock pioneers, Steeleye Span, who are visiting Newcastle's New Vic Theatre with a new, live show in November.

Maddy Prior, the voice of Steeleye, leads a line-up, featuring faces old and new, performing new gems alongside the classics that have made one of the most successful, British folk-rock bands.

The performance (on Wednesday, November 25th) commences at 7.30pm, and tickets (priced at £18.50, £20.50 and £22 [with concessions]) are available from the New Vic Box Office on (01782) 717962 or online at www.newvictheatre.org.uk

OCTOBER 2015 | 29sales: 01782 461711

AUTUMN MOTORINGCar-registrations boostAUGUST featured the highest figure of new car-registrations for the month since 2007.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) stated that new car-registrations rose by 9.6% to 79,060 vehicles, with the Ford Fiesta, Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf models leading the way.

It extended the record run of rising sales to a 42nd month, and brought the number of new registrations for the year so far to £1.6 million, with industry officials predicting more growth to come.

There was also very strong demand for

"alternatively-fuelled vehicles", such as plug-in hybrids and pure electric cars.

Sales were up by 52%, although these cars still only represents 2.4% of the market.

There was an even higher jump in sales of commercial vehicles, such as vans and 17,500 (this coming at a time when European and global markets are relatively flat).

"August's strong performance has, again, been driven by attractive, financial deals and a diverse range of technologically-advanced models," said Mike Hawes, SMMT's chief executive.

"Britain's budget-conscious buyers are taking advantage of of low, regular, monthly payments that provide certainty."

The SMMT expects full-year, new car-sales to rise by nearly 4% on last year.

In the first, eight months of the year sales were up by 6.7%, but the increases are expected to taper off in the New Year.

Some sales-growth over the past three-and-a-half years has occurred, because motorists desisted from buying such big-ticket items, following the crash of 2008.

However, much has also come from businesses buying either individual cars or whole batches of vehicles.

In August, there was a 12% rise in fleet-sales and the same percentage increase in business transactions.

It has also provided a boost for Britain's strong motor industry: Nissan has announced plans to invest a further £100 million in its Sunderland plant to build the next generation of its Juke crossover car.

The Ford Fiesta was the top-selling car last month (4,753), followed by the Ford Focus (2,673), Volkswagen Golf (2,456), Vauxhall Corsa (2,154) and Volkswagen Polo (1,911).

Optimum advice at a time of personal griefIT is an indubitable truth that the healing process is something which each and every person in the country must experience at least once in his or her life.

For, bereavement is, quite simply, one of the great immutables in quotidian life.

It is, however, equally true that, when it impinges on our consciousness, the overwhelming majority of us are completely unprepared for the demands which it makes upon us.

It is, of course, essential that we are able to cope with the practical and emotional demands encountered at this potentially harrowing time.

The subject of death was a constant theme in conversation and thought in Victorian and Edwardian society, prior to World War I.

But, now, in the early-21st century, it is something that is (to put it mildly) assiduously avoided.

Accordingly, when we losed a loved one (be it a partner, relative or a very close friend), it is imperative that we acquire the support, help and care of a reputable, well-established firm of funeral directors.

This company should possess the requisite experience of dealing with all the arrangements and, at the same time, providing optimum advice at your time of personal grief.

Its professional standards ensure that kindness, sympathy and understanding combine to lift the inexorable burden imposed upon the bereavedas is humanly possible, providing help, comfort and support, when it is most required.

In truth, grieving is a healing process, and, whilst our sense of loss will never disappear

entirely, it will diminish, as a return to normalcy (in terms of working and social life) reasserts itself.

FRIENDLY RELIABLE SERVICE EVERYTHING YOU NEED FOR

YOUR HOME.

Excellence is Martyn's trademarkMARTYN Stanyer strongly believes in offering customers a service so excellent that it would even satisfy himself!

"I treat my customers as if they were members of my own family, and I don't stand for the 'It'll Do' attitude that is prevalent in so many trades," he told us.

Moreover, his business, MS Services, offers such a wide-ranging remit in terms of home improvement (both internal and external) that it encompasses everything from changing a washer to building a house!

M.S. Services encompasses bathrooms, bedrooms, windows, doors and loft-conversions, with exemplary kitchen and bathroom work being Martyn's particular fort'e, as he utilises his wealth of experience and expertise.

However, 2013 saw his business enhanced by moving into the gardening sphere (including,

naturally, fencing).

Unsurprisingly, MS Services enjoys an abundance of customers' recommendations!

Of course, caring genuinely about your clients has its positive aspects.

"If you treat customers well, you have them for life; they start out as a customer and end up as a friend," commented sole proprietor, Martyn, who is very flexible in his approach to clients.

"I don't give the usual, massive quotes (which are often unfairly inflated to the tune of about 20%), with the result that most established customers never ask for a price. Also, they can buy their own materials, using my own trade-discounts."

MS Services operates over a wide radius, taking in Staffordshire (including the whole of Stoke-on-Trent) and parts of neighbouring Cheshire.

IN ADDITION, MARTYN'S WEBSITE WILL SOON BE AVAILABLE!

SPRATSLADE HOUSE

Belgrave Avenue, Dresden, Stoke-on-TrentTel: 01782 311531 www.pearlcare.co.uk

A care home for the older physically disabled or people with dementia

Single en-suite rooms, regular entertainment, excellent food,

choice of menu.Long/short term stay.

A HOME THAT REALLY CARESRESIDENTS at this care home are assured of only the highest standards of residential care services, offered within a warm and homely environment.

Indeed, it is the mission statement of the management and staff of Spratslade House (a splendid, neo-Italianate mansion, dating from the mid-19th century) at Dresden, near Longton, to ensure that all needs are identified and addressed in a holistic manner on an individual basis.

First and foremost, it is their aim to provide a friendly ambience, which each and every resident can regard as their own, personal 'home', where their requirements and wishes are paramount, to be honoured and respected at all times.

Here, all residents are treated with respect (regardless of age, sex, race or religious belief), and it is a place, where, in comfort, safety and security, each guest is encouraged to be the same person which he or she has always been!

Spratslade House is a 30-bed home which is registered for elderly residential care for both male and female residents over the age of 65 years.

Its 30 single rooms are fully furnished, but residents are encouraged to bring their own items of personal belongings (subject to them meeting safety-regulations).

A wide range of activities is provided by the home's staff, and this programme is devised, following discussion with residents and relatives.

Moreover, residents with any suggestions can discuss them with Care Manager, Janet Bentley (who has worked at Spratslade for an impressive 26 years), or one of the home's senior carers.

The home offers breakfast, lunch and an evening meal, with snacks and drinks provided each day and night (a varied menu-cycle has been advised, via consultation with residents, to meet their dietary and nutritional needs).

Additional facilities (including weekly hairdressing-visits; optical and dental services, and visits by a private chiropodist) are also available.

Importantly, Pearlcare (Spratslade Ltd.) is consistently committed to its staff, and supports their personal development through training and career-progression, believing that this will allow the company to continue to focus upon developing standards of excellence in all of its homes.
