!Señor, ten compasión de mí!

Our Christian life is a life of prayer. Our Lord Jesus Christ spent a lot of time in

prayer. He prayed at every important moment of his life. He prayed alone at

night and at dawn, Mk1:35//Lk5:17//Mt 13:23.

He prayed before meals, Mt 14:19. He prayed before his baptism Lk3:22. He

prayed before choosing the twelve apostles, Lk 6:12. Before teaching his disci-

ples the prayer of our father he prayed, Lk11:1//Mt6:5 and before Peter’s con-

fession at Caesarea Philippi, he prayed Lk 9:18. At transfiguration, Jesus prayed

Lk 9:28-29. At the garden of Gethsemane, he took his time and prayed and lastly,

when he was on the cross, Mt27:46//Lk 23:46, he prayed.

Jesus prayed for his persecutors, Lk 23:34, he prayed for his disciples and

those who will follow them, Jn17:9-24. He also prayed for himself, Mt26:39, and

he still prays for us, Rm8:34//Hb7:25. His prayers shows his closeness to the Fa-

ther Mt11:25-27, who listens to him always, Jn11:22;44. And lastly he taught us how to pray, the prayer of

Our Father, the prayer of the church.

We learned from Jesus that prayers are offered to the Father and they are specific expressions of praise

and thanksgiving to God, confession and petition, supplication and intercession. Prayer is a matter of the

heart, in which we express to God our unspoken feelings, our joys, tensions in our hearts and sorrows that

we feel as a result of our particular situation in life.

This weekend readings tell us some beautiful ideas of prayer. That prayer is a conversation between us

and God and that when we pray, we should not give up until our prayers are answered. The gospel tells us

about a Canaanite woman, who followed Jesus and asked him to heal her sick daughter. This woman entered

into a conversation with Jesus even when the disciples intervened to restrain her from following Christ, she

did not give up. When Jesus saw her perseverance in her request, he granted her her heart’s desire.

So we also should pray without ceasing. Praying without ceasing does not mean to think about God in con-

trast to thinking about other things or to talk to God instead of talking to other people. Rather it means to

think, to speak and to live in the presence of God. Also, prayer can only become unceasing when all our

thoughts-beautiful or ugly, high or low, proud or shameful, sorrowful or joyful can be thought and expressed

in the presence of God. Thus converting our unceasing thinking to unceasing prayer moves us from a self-

centered monologue to a God-centered dialogue as the woman did. Prayer, therefore, is not introspection. It

does not look inward but outward. Prayer is an outward, careful attentiveness to the other who invites us to

an unceasing conversation. It's a presentation of all thoughts - reflective thoughts as well as daydreams and

night-mares - to our loving Father who can see them and respond to them with divine compassion. Prayer,

therefore, is a joyful affirmation that God knows our minds and hearts without anything being hidden.

The first reading tells us about the love of God, who speaks to his people and who guides them to do good.

When God speaks, we have to listen. And our response to the will of God should be through doing what he

commands us to do. This is what prayer as a conversation is all about. Because when we speak, He listens and

when He speaks we have to listen, and to respond by our actions in faith.

In prayer we have to be open to God and to pour out to Him what we have in our hearts so that He can

help us. The woman in the gospel knew what she wanted and she prayed for it. Ultimately she got it. When

we pray, let us be clear, tell him what you want and he will give it to you. Don’t hide anything from Him,

share it with him. Let us pray like Jesus prayed, let's pray without ceasing and to pray for what is good.

But there are also obstacles in prayer. The disciples were stopping the woman from accessing Jesus. At

(continua en la pagina próxima)

times it may not be people but other obstacles that can hinder us from reaching God in prayer. So let us

watch out and be strong. Don't give up. Pray without ceasing.

Amen.

No mira hacia adentro sino hacia afuera.

No te rindas. Orar sin cesar.
