CASE STUDY CITYRINGEN COPENHAGEN
Cityringen will be a completely new, fully automatic, driverless metro ring line due to be
opened in 2018. The ring line will be 15.5 km long and is situated under downtown
Copenhag en, the bridge quartersand Frederiksberg. It will have transfer facilities to the
existing metro stations at Kongens Nytorv and Frederiksberg. Furthermore, there will be
transfer facilities to the existing regional and commuter railway station at Kbenhaven Station,at sterport station and at Nrrebro station. In total, the ring line will consist of 17
underground stations with island platforms.
The client Metroselskabet awarded the construction contract to the Salini-led JV Copenhagen
Metro Team (CMT). CMT awarded the instrumentation and monitoring contract to SMT,
a company owned by GEODATA Ziviltechnikergesellschaft Austria and Angermeier Ingenieure
GmbH Germany. The monitoring database system KRONOS has been provided by
GEODATA Ziviltechnikergesellschaft Austria.
Urban tunnel projects, like the Cityringen,
are related with special geotechnical risks.
Most typically they are caused by poor
geological conditions, very low overburden
and existing structures in the influence zone
of the construction. To manage these risks,
an early detection and warning of unexpected
behavior of the affected geotechnical objects
(ground, structures like tunnel and buildings) are
mandatory. To accomplish this detection and
warning, the design and execution of a suitable
geotechnical monitoring program is necessary. This ca n only be ach ieved b y imple menting a
monitoring database system capable of collecting
monitoring results according to the monitoring
program from different sources in near real
time and to use the data after importing to the
database to check different alarm levels and the
monitoring frequency. In more detail, this means
specifying and performing a systematic and
continuous acquisition, processing and analysis of
monitoring data and information.
In order to handle this data explosion, tunnel
information systems and geo-databases have
been developed and already installed in various
projects. In contrast to most of these systems,
the KRONOS system developed by GEODATA
has the capability to connect (to) the different
theme-specific databases used by subcontractors
and, thus, to serve as a central data management
system through which can be accessed any kind
of digital data produced in the tunnel project.
This mak es poss ible th e imple mentatio n of
further useful functions and services supporting
tunnelling tasks such as machine control, tunnel
simulation, geological prediction, process
optimization, etc. where data from different
engineering disciplines must be combined andprocessed in an integrated way.
So, there is one integrated database system which
is the single source of truth for all monitoring data.
The KRONOS system has been up and running
since the start of the project in 2011 and has
delivered reliable results to the client and the
contractor.
Up to now, we have collected over 118 million
measurements.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The con tinuous acquisit ion of the cur rent
machines position is based on measurements
taken from a total station, which is connected
to the PLC via Bluetooth radios. The total
station is mounted on a bracket at the back of
the tunnel and measures and tracks two motor
targets which are mounted on the machine. At an
arbitrary interval, an automatic orientation check
WORKING PRINCIPLE
The hard ware is c ompleme nted by straight forward
software.
TunnelEdit or is us ed for alignmen t, prof ile and
data management and is operated by the on-site
surveyor. TaurosOnline is used onboard to control
the guidance system components and their
operations, to perform data processing and data
transfer.
On top of TaurosOnline, Sandvik adds its own
vizualisation which displays the cutterhead, the
profile geometry and some additional information.
is performed to a backsight prism.
Several additional machine sensors are added
into the calculation process to determine thecutter heads position in the project coordinate
system with high accuracy.
All operations are carried out automatically. The
automatic observation of thresholds reduces the
operators workload even more and informs theuser of possible problems.
TAUROS GUIDANCE SYSTEM FORSANDVIK ROADHEADERS
BENEFITS OF AN INTEGRATED SYSTEM
The control software communicates with
integrated on-board sensors and software
components and, by this way, any redundant
hardware installations are avoided.
All sensors are factory installed and calibrated,
subsequent calibration can be done on site.
Advanced features of roadheader control
system become available (e.g. auto stop swing
on profile boundary).
All machine operating data relevant to the
operator is displayed on a single screen.
Support for the entire product through single
commercial partner
HIGHLIGHTS:
Fully Automatic Positioning of the Roadheader
Deep Integration of the Guidance System into the Machine Control System
Clear and Intuitive User Interface All Information on a Single Screen
Office Software for Data Management (Tunnel Alignment, Profiles, System Settings)
Display of the Current Profile and the Maximum Reach for Easy Repositioning
High Accuracy Reduces Risk of Under/Overcutting of the Profile
When using flexible excavation machines such
as Sandvik roadheaders, the ability to exactly
and efficiently excavate a desired profile without
compromising advance rates by frequent
repositioning and tentative excavation can only be
achieved by the use of exact geodetic guidance and
integrated profile management.
Tauros for roadheaders is a guidance system which
is jointly developed by Sandvik and Geodata.
In contrast to other roadheader guidance systems,
all hardware and software components are highly
integrated into available roadheader on-board
components. This deep integration of the guidance
system into the general machine control system
yields a variety of benefits for the customer.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Successful tunneling with TBMs demands a
guidance system of the best quality and the
highest achievable accuracy.
TAUROS TBM is a bra nd-new develop ment by
Geodata which offers just that and much more.
The gui dance s ystem c onsists of seve ral sens ors
and measurement systems which are equipped
with the latest technology and which are
influenced by more than 25 years of experience in
tunneling. These sensors and systems are linked,
providing a position determination of the TBM
with high accuracy which results in a high-quality
tunneling process.
TAUROS TBM is built up modu larly. It can be used
on Single Shield TBMS as well as Double Shield
TBMs b y addin g the ro bust c amera mea surement
unit. The fully automatic tail skin clearance ( TSC)
measurement system in combination with the
ring sequencing module enable the automatic
calculation of the best fitting ring and ensure an
optimum ring sequence, therefore saving time and
reducing the risk of damages to the shield.
A continuous display of the c urrent position
and heading of the TBM is the main task of
this system. Additional data and information
necessary for operating and guiding the
machine is displayed within an intuitive and
straightforward user interface which demands
only limited user interaction.

TSC MEASUREMENTSYSTEM & RING
SEQUENCING
The new ly deve loped Tail Skin Cl earance (TSC)
Measurement system consists of industrial
ultrasonic sensors which are mounted within
the tail skin. The sensors measure the tail skin
clearance automatically and directly.
The rin g seque ncing module t hen use s these
measurements and adds the current position of
the machine, the length of the thrust cylinders
and the position of the previous rings to calculate
the optimum next ring.
Important information such as the current lead
of the ring and the TSC are displayed graphically
and numerically. This whole process happens
literally within seconds and therefore reduces the
operators workload drastically.
