“Sensory poems create a descriptive mind picture of an object or event,
because the words echo the reader's own sensory experiences of that
object or event.”

Loneliness
Cold, coarse, clammy fingersCreep their twisted way into the
mind.As loneliness' piercing scream
Echoes soundlessly into emptiness,Its musty, decaying path
Leaves no room for coherent thought.© Copyright 2003 Viv - better bit by bit (UN: vzabel at Writing.Com). All rights reserved.
A sensory poem should include descriptive language meant to capture all five of the human senses: touch, sight, hearing, taste and smell.
A basic format to begin a sensory poem looks like:
Place sounds likePlace smells likePlace feels like
Place tastes likePlace looks like
My kitchen sounds like banging pots, sizzling bacon, laughing
voicesIt smells like garlic and cinnamon
sugarIt is warm and comforting
The air tastes of tomato sauce and ricotta cheese
My kitchen is blue and white, and light streams in through the open
blinds
My beach air smells salty and damp,
I taste it as I squish sandbetween my toes.
I hear the waves crashand seagulls squack.
They circle and searchfor a snack.
