SENSUS FIDEI

October 22 was a busy news day. That was the day a

video was publicized in which Pope Francis appeared

to express support civil unions for homosexual

couples. It turned out that the video combined two

distinct answers to two distinct questions and the result

was to make it look like the Pope responded to one

question. Since then the spotlight moved from this

topic to others. But sudden changes of attention do not

always fit well with reflection.

Reflection takes the time to consider a

particular word or event from a variety of different

perspectives and this kind of consideration can last for

quite a while. Reflecting on the news from October 22,

past newsletters considered how the Church proclaims

truth, the idea that there is a hierarchy of truth, and the

ways in which the Church communicates more important truths and less important truths. There’s

still another part of all of this to consider. It’s the role of all the Faithful in proclaiming the Truth

of the Church and that’s where the phrase sensus fidei (sense of the faithful) enters the

conversation.

“Sensus fidei” is elaborated in the Vatican II constitution Lumen Gentium #12. In this

section it’s noted that the “entire body of the faithful, anointed as they are by the Holy One, cannot

err in matters of belief. They manifest this special property by means of the whole peoples'

supernatural discernment in matters of faith when ‘from the Bishops down to the last of the lay

faithful’ they show universal agreement in matters of faith and morals.” There can be aspects of

faith and morality that are without error because they are revealed by the Holy One, God himself,

and the laity have a role

in clarifying such

teachings.

But it is not the

case that all the laity are

polled and their opinion

on a particular issue and

if a majority is in favor,

that matter is then

recognized as a

teaching without error.

It’s also not the case that

all the bishops are polled on their opinions about a particular matter and then that opinion is

recognized as a teaching without error should a majority of bishops agree. Democracy is a

wonderful idea, but declaring something to be a clear and definite truth is beyond unaided human

capacities. So in the Church teachings are not determined by simple majority votes. There’s more

to it than that.

The sentence following the quotation already given from Vatican II reads: “discernment in

matters of faith is aroused and sustained by the Spirit of truth.” Discerning something as part of

Revelation itself is guided by the God. People’s opinions about things stem from a variety of

motives and some of these are not grounded in the Spirit

of truth. It takes time to separate the motives, both

personally and for the Church as a whole. Anyone who

has discerned knows this. The whole process is

complicated by varying degrees of understanding of both

Scripture, Tradition, and Spirituality within the

1,000,000,000 + members of the Church.

So the Church moves slowly. It looks for

understandings rooted in Scripture and Tradition, not just

bits and pieces of them. It looks for insights that are

capable of outlasting current social, economic, and

political trends. It weighs the support for a current

understanding to see where the bulk of the emotion and

the argument actually lies. It avoids the extremes of

rationalism (ruling out faith) and fideism (ruling out

reason). It seeks the virtue of prudence (the disposition

of practical reason to understand the true good in every

circumstance and to choose the right means of achieving

it). An example of prudence may be found St. Pope John

Paul II’s life. He believed that Mary is our co-redemptrix because of her tight connection with her

Son. Because Mary’s will and her life are so completely wrapped up with that of her Son - although

she is not her Son - she cooperates in the work of Christ to a very

high degree. From this it makes sense that Christ is the one

Redeemer and Mary in particular shares this work and so is co-

redemptrix. John Paul II could have solemnly and formally made

this a dogma of the Church (like the bodily Assumption of Mary

into Heaven) but he chose not to do so. He knew that

evangelization would suffer because millions of people already

erroneously believe that Catholics worship Mary and that these

people would see Mary solemnly proclaimed as co-redemptrix as

proof of their erroneous belief. John Paul II also knew that

evangelization is a central part of the Church’s mission. In fact,

a solemn and formal ex cathedra teaching from the pope has only

been made twice, once with the dogma of the Immaculate

Conception and once with the dogma of the bodily Assumption

of Mary into Heaven. Both of these declarations were not

controversial in Catholic circles.

Gathering lay and ordained opinions together and discerning with prudence is a big part of

the call for the bishops, pope, and laity to work together. It is true that either the pope or the

bishops and the pope in an ecumenical council can solemnly define dogmas, but it is also true that

this group of ordained persons can be as split as lay people can. The point is to discern the truth

despite the divisions, no matter where these divisions may be. The whole process could be a time

of deepening in the faith. Lumen Gentium #12 notes that the magisterium (teaching authority) of

the church “is exercised under the guidance of the sacred teaching authority [popes and bishops],

in faithful and respectful obedience to which the people of God accepts that which is not just the

word of men but truly the word of God. Through it, the people of God adheres unwaveringly to

the faith given once and for all to the saints, penetrates it more deeply with right thinking, and

applies it more fully in its life.”

THE BISHOP VISITS OUR DEANERY; HAPPY 20TH ANNIVERSARY TO DEACONS TELLEZ AND

AGUIRRE

Our parish is in the southwest section or deanery of the diocese. This deanery includes Millard,

Sevier, Garfield, Beaver, Piute, part of Wayne, Iron, Washington, and Kane counties. The deanery

covers about 33% of the square miles of Utah but only about 12% of the state’s population. It

takes about five hours to drive from St. George to Salt Lake.

The Bishop does not get down here often, but he has agreed to celebrate a 20th anniversary

Mass for two of our deacons in St. George (Rogaciano

Tellez and Rigoberto Aguirre) and one of the deacons

in Cedar City (Denny Davies). The Mass will be in

Cedar City and attendance will be limited due to social

distancing restrictions. Please sent congratulations to

our deacons in lieu of going to the anniversary Mass

in Cedar City. Both men have served with distinction

and dedication.

Since the bishop will be in the area, he will drive to St. George in time to celebrate the 9:00

a.m. Mass this Sunday, November 22. Fortunately for us, this is the least attended of the three

Sunday Masses. So we can handle a few more people in the overflow space in Kuzy Hall. In the

event that more people show up for Mass than anticipated, we will have close the doors and suggest

that some people attend another Mass.

Turning people away from one Mass is far from ideal, but these are not ideal times. Please

remember to pray for our deacons, the bishop, and all our brothers and sisters in the diocese.

THE BOOKSTORE IS OPEN AFTER THE WEEKEND MASSES

As part of our program of doing all that we can do safely in these Covid-19 times, the bookstore

has reopened after the weekend Masses at 5:00 p.m., 9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., and 1:00 p.m. as well

as during the week, Tuesday – Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The bookstore will not be

open Thanksgiving Day. Masks are necessary in the bookstore and only 2-3 customers in the

bookstore at one time. Please do not touch items which you do not wish to buy.

Quite a few Advent and Christmas items are coming in and being stocked. The bookstore

is just the place to help keep Christ is Christmas.

On the weekends some parishioners may wish to visit the bookstore after Mass. These

parishioners can exit the church on through the vestibule. All others, please exit through the main

doors by the baptismal font so as to avoid congestion in the vestibule. We seem to avoid the spread

of Covid-19 through contact in the church building. We want to keep the trend going. Thanks for

your help.

STEPHEN MINISTRY

Our parish mission statement notes that “we are on community nourished and transformed by the

Eucharist. As the body of Christ, we are led by the

Holy Spirit to know, love and serve God and one

another.” It’s a good mission statement because it

uses few words to capture something of the essence

of what the parish is.

Knowing, loving, and serving God and one

another can be achieved in many ways. Several of

our prayer groups, study groups, and service groups

are already doing a good job bringing these words

to life. Stephen Ministry fits in nicely with these

same words. So without any worries, the words

from the Stephen Ministry website apply to our

parish: “Stephen Ministry multiplies blessings

throughout the church and community.

Congregations carry out Christ’s commandment to “Love one another as I have loved

you” (John 15:12) in a powerful and practical way.

Pastors have a team of gifted, trained, and committed lay caregivers ready to minister to

hurting people.

Laypeople nurture and use their gifts in meaningful ministry, growing spiritually as they

serve others.

People who are hurting have a caring Christian presence to provide emotional and

spiritual support.

In short, Stephen Ministry helps carry out the mission of the church.”

GRATITUDE AND THANKS

Like other communities, our Hispanic parishioners like to get together. Covid-19 has thrown a

wrench into attempts to meet this

legitimate need. So several months

ago when members of the Hispanic

community proposed a Spanish

retreat to reinforce and welcome the

Spirit in these strange days, the need

for such an event was clear. But the

presence of Covid-19 restrictions

demanded compromises. The

retreat could not be open to anyone who wished to attend. So it was decided to limit it to the retreat

to group leaders. Since many groups have presidents, vice-presidents, secretaries and/or treasurers

and since many of the people in these positions have spouses, further limitations needed to be

made. Finally it was decided to invite only one set of representatives from each group. Neither

of these compromises were easy. Thanks to our Spanish groups for making them. The retreat was

last Saturday, it went well, there was plenty of room for social distancing and the retreat leaders

from American Fork in Utah County were very capable. Thanks to our retreat leaders, Angie

Gomez Diaz and Sandra Vargas, and all the members of Misioneros de Jesus y Maria who made

the day possible. Thanks also to Fr. Sebastien who journeyed down from Salt Lake to help out.

HOLIDAY FOOD BASKETS AND GIVING TREES

Adjusting to time constraints and Covid-19 realities means that the parish will not be offering food

baskets this month for Thanksgiving. The plan for December is to offer gift cards toward food

baskets and gift cards in place of the giving

tree gifts. Sign-ups for both of the December

activities will be the same as they were last

year.

Those wishing to contribute toward

gift cards for either the December food basket

or the December gifts for children (instead of

taking a name from the giving tree and going out to buy children’s gifts) may do so by: (1) labeling

an envelope as either “Gifts for Children” or “Food Baskets” and placing it in the weekend

collection basket (2) mailing to the office a donation labeled as either “Gifts for Children” or “Food

Basket.”

Currently the plan is to distribute the gift cards for the food baskets on December 17.

CANDY FOR KIDS

Our religious education program will offer a simplified posadas celebration December 19 in Kuzy

Hall. To prepare for that celebration, our director of religious education, Mariana Lawrentz, is

collecting bags of chocolate candy. Should you wish to donate, please bring your sealed bags of

candy to Mariana’s office on the third floor. Thank you.

SCHEDULING REMINDERS

The church continues to be open for Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Tuesday through

Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The reason the church is not open on Mondays is

because the cleaners are at work on Mondays.

Drive through confessions continue this Saturday from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Our liturgical streaming schedule continues with daily Masses Monday through Friday

streamed live on Facebook at 8:00 a.m. (English) and 7:00 p.m. (Spanish). After live

streaming these Masses remain on Facebook as do the Sunday Masses which are streamed

live at 11:00 a.m. (English) and 1:00 p.m. (Spanish). These Sunday Masses are also on

SENSUS FIDEI

El 22 de octubre fue un ajetreado día de noticias. Ese

fue el día en que se publicó un video en el que el Papa

Francisco apareció para expresar su apoyo a las uniones

civiles para parejas homosexuales. Resultó que el video

combinó dos respuestas distintas a dos preguntas

distintas y el resultado fue que pareciera que el Papa

respondió a una pregunta. Desde entonces, el centro de

atención pasó de este tema a otros. Pero los cambios

repentinos de atención no siempre encajan bien con la

reflexión.

La reflexión toma tiempo para considerar una

palabra o evento en particular desde una variedad de

perspectivas diferentes y este tipo de consideración

puede durar bastante tiempo. Reflexionando sobre las

noticias del 22 de octubre, los boletines anteriores

consideraron cómo la Iglesia proclama la verdad, la idea de que existe una jerarquía de la verdad

y las formas en que la Iglesia comunica verdades más importantes y verdades menos importantes.

Todavía hay otra parte de todo esto a considerar. Es el papel de todos los Fieles en la proclamación

de la Verdad de la Iglesia y ahí es donde la frase sensus fidei (sentido de los fieles) entra en la

conversación.

caso que todos los

laicos son encuestados

y su opinión sobre un

tema en particular y si la

mayoría está a favor,

ese tema se reconoce

entonces como una

enseñanza sin error.

Tampoco es el caso de que todos los obispos sean encuestados sobre sus opiniones sobre un asunto

en particular y luego esa opinión se reconozca como una enseñanza sin error si la mayoría de los

obispos están de acuerdo. La democracia es una idea maravillosa, pero declarar que algo es una

verdad clara y definida está más allá de las capacidades humanas sin ayuda. Entonces, en la Iglesia,

las enseñanzas no se determinan por mayoría simple de votos. Hay más que eso.

La frase que sigue a la cita ya dada del Vaticano II dice: "el discernimiento en materia de

fe es suscitado y sostenido por el Espíritu de la verdad.” El discernimiento de algo como parte de

la Revelación misma es guiado por Dios. Las opiniones

de las personas sobre las cosas provienen de una variedad

tanto personalmente como para la Iglesia en su conjunto.

Cualquiera que haya discernido lo sabe. Todo el proceso

Entonces la Iglesia se mueve lentamente. Busca

(descartar la fe) y el fideísmo (descartar la razón). Busca

la virtud de la prudencia (la disposición de la razón

práctica para comprender el verdadero bien en cada circunstancia y elegir los medios adecuados

para lograrlo). Un ejemplo de prudencia se puede encontrar en la vida de San Juan Pablo II. Creía

que María es nuestra corredentora debido a su estrecha conexión con su Hijo. Debido a que la

voluntad y la vida de María están tan completamente ligadas a la de su Hijo, aunque ella no es su

Hijo, ella coopera en la obra de Cristo en un grado muy alto. De ahí que tenga sentido que Cristo

es el único Redentor y María en particular comparte esta obra y,

por lo tanto, es corredentora. Juan Pablo II podría haber hecho de

esto de manera solemne y formal un dogma de la Iglesia (como la

Asunción corporal de María al cielo), pero decidió no hacerlo.

Sabía que la evangelización sufriría porque millones de personas

ya creen erróneamente que los católicos adoran a María y que

estas personas verían a María proclamada solemnemente como

corredentora como prueba de su creencia errónea. Juan Pablo II

también sabía que la evangelización es una parte central de la

misión de la Iglesia. De hecho, una enseñanza ex cathedra

solemne y formal del Papa solo se ha hecho dos veces, una con el

pesar de las divisiones, sin importar dónde estén estas divisiones. Todo el proceso podría ser un

momento de profundización en la fe. Lumen Gentium # 12 señala que el magisterio (autoridad

docente) de la iglesia “se ejerce bajo la guía de la autoridad docente sagrada [papas y obispos], en

obediencia fiel y respetuosa a la cual el pueblo de Dios acepta lo que no es solo el palabra de

hombres pero verdaderamente palabra de Dios. A través de ella, el pueblo de Dios se adhiere

inquebrantablemente a la fe dada una vez por todas a los santos, la penetra más profundamente

con el pensamiento recto y la aplica más plenamente en su vida”

EL OBISPO VISITA NUESTRO DECANATO FELIZ 20 ANIVERSARIO A LOS DIÁCONOS TELLEZ Y

AGUIRRE

Nuestra parroquia está en la sección suroeste o decanato de la diócesis. Este decanato incluye

Millard, Sevier, Garfield, Beaver, Piute, parte de los condados de Wayne, Iron, Washington y

Kane. El decanato cubre aproximadamente el 33% de las millas cuadradas de Utah, pero solo el

LA LIBRERÍA ESTÁ ABIERTA DESPUÉS DE LAS MISAS DE

FIN DE SEMANA

Como parte de nuestro programa de hacer todo lo que podemos hacer de manera segura en estos

horarios de Covid-19, la librería está abierto después de las Misas de fin de semana a las 5:00 p.m.,

9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m. y 1:00 p.m. así como durante la semana, martes a jueves de 10:00 a 2:00. La

librería no estará abierta el Día de Acción de Gracias. Las máscaras son necesarias en la librería y

solo 2-3 clientes en la librería a la vez. No toque los artículos que no desee comprar.

Muchos artículos de Adviento y Navidad están llegando y han sido almacenados. La

librería es el lugar ideal para ayudar a mantener a Cristo en Navidad.

Los fines de semana, algunos feligreses desean visitar la librería después de la Misa. Estos

feligreses pueden salir de la iglesia por el vestíbulo. Todos los demás, salgan por las puertas

principales por la pila bautismal para evitar la congestión en el vestíbulo. De esa manera evitamos

la propagación de Covid-19 a través del contacto en el edificio de la iglesia. Queremos seguir esto.

EL MINISTERIO STEPHEN

Nuestra declaración de misión parroquial señala que “estamos en una comunidad alimentados y

transformados por la Eucaristía. Como cuerpo de Cristo, somos guiados por el Espíritu Santo a

conocer, amar y servir a Dios y unos a otros." Es una

buena declaración de misión porque usa pocas

palabras para captar algo de la esencia de lo que es

la parroquia.

Conocer, amar y servir a Dios y a los demás se

puede lograr de muchas maneras. Varios de nuestros

grupos de oración, grupos de estudio y grupos de

servicio ya están haciendo un buen trabajo al dar

vida a estas palabras. El Ministerio Stephen encaja

muy bien con estas mismas palabras. Así que, sin

preocupaciones, las palabras del sitio web del

Ministrio Stephen se aplican a nuestra parroquia:

“El Ministerio Stephen multiplica las bendiciones

en toda la iglesia y la comunidad.

Las congregaciones cumplen el mandamiento de Cristo de "Amaos los unos a los otros

como yo os he amado" (Juan 15:12) de una manera poderosa y práctica.

Los pastores tienen un equipo de cuidadores laicos dotados, capacitados y comprometidos,

GRATITUD Y GRACIAS

De la misma manera que otras comunidades, a nuestros feligreses hispanos les gusta reunirse.

Covid-19 ha deshecho los intentos de satisfacer esta necesidad legítima. Así que hace varios meses

cuando miembros de la comunidad hispana propusieron un retiro en español para reforzar y dar la

bienvenida al Espíritu en estos días extraños, la necesidad de tal evento era clara. Pero la presencia

de restricciones de Covid-19 exigía compromisos. El retiro no podía estar abierto a cualquiera que

quisiera asistir. Por eso se decidió

limitar el retiro a los líderes de

grupos. Dado que muchos grupos

tienen presidentes, vicepresidentes,

secretarios y / o tesoreros y dado

que muchas de las personas en estos

puestos tienen cónyuges, fue

necesario establecer más

limitaciones. Finalmente, se decidió invitar a un solo grupo de representantes de cada grupo.

Ninguno de estos compromisos fue fácil. Gracias a nuestros grupos hispanos por hacerlos. El retiro

fue el sábado pasado, salió bien, hubo mucho espacio para el distanciamiento social y los líderes

del retiro de American Fork en el condado de Utah fueron muy capaces. Gracias a nuestras líderes

de retiro, Angie Gomez Diaz y Sandra Vargas, y a todos los miembros de Misioneros de Jesus y

Maria que hicieron posible el día. Gracias también al P. Sebastien, quien viajó desde Salt Lake

para ayudar.

CANASTAS DE NAVIDAD Y REGALOS PARA NIÑOS

Adaptarse a las limitaciones de tiempo y las realidades de Covid-19 significa que la parroquia no

ofrecerá canastas de comida este mes para el Día de Acción de Gracias. El plan para diciembre es

ofrecer tarjetas de regalo para canastas de alimentos y tarjetas de regalo en lugar de los regalos del

árbol. Las inscripciones para las dos actividades de diciembre serán las mismas que el año pasado.

Aquellos que deseen contribuir con tarjetas de regalo para la canasta de alimentos de diciembre o

los regalos de diciembre para niños (en lugar de tomar un nombre del árbol de donaciones y salir

a comprar regalos para niños) pueden hacerlo: (1) escriben un sobre ya sea "Regalos para niños"

alimentos".

DULCES PARA NIÑOS

Nuestro programa de educación religiosa ofrecerá una celebración simplificada de Las Posadas el

19 de diciembre en Kuzy. Para prepararnos para esa celebración, estamos pidiendo donaciones de

bolsas de caramelos de chocolate. Si le gustaría donar, por favor traiga sus bolsos sellados de

dulces a la oficina de Mariana en el tercer piso. Gracias.

PROGRAMACIÓN DE RECORDATORIOS

• La iglesia continúa abierta para la Adoración del Santísimo Sacramento de martes a viernes de

9:00 a.m. a 3:00 p.m. La razón por la cual la iglesia no está abierta los lunes es porque la iglesia

es limpiada ese día.

• Nuestro horario de transmisión litúrgica continúa con Misas diarias de lunes a viernes

transmitidas en vivo en Facebook a las 8:00 a.m. (inglés) y a las 7:00 p.m. (español). Después de

la transmisión en vivo, estas Misas permanecen en Facebook, al igual que las Misas dominicales

que se transmiten en vivo a las 11:00 a.m. (inglés) y a la 1:00 p.m. (español). Estas misas
