SEOUL BACKPACKING(8th -14th Sept 2014)

ITINERARY:

DAY 1 – ITAEWON MOSQUE - BUKCHON HANOK VILLAGE - GYEONGBOKGUNG PALACE - GWANGHWAMUN SQUARE – SSAMZIEGIL - NAMSAN TOWER.

- From Itaewon Mosque walk to Itaewon Station (Exit 3) about 290m, then take subway Line 6 towards Yaksu Station, transfer subway Line 3 towards Anguk Station (Exit 2), walk straight about 300m.

- From Ssaemziegil, take subway Line 3 Anguk Station (Exit 6) towards Chungmuro Station, transfer subway Line 4 towards Myeondong Station (Exit 3), take road to the right of Pacific Hotel and walk for 10 mins.

- From N tower walk about 1km, around 10 min ( landmark : Caffe Bene, Pacific Hotel) to Myeondong Station (Exit 3), take subway Line 4 towards Samgakji Station, transfer to subway Line 6 towards Itaewon (Exit 1) then walk to guesthouse.

DAY 2 – CHEONGDAM-DONG - COEX MALL - EWHA UNIVERSITY - HONGDAE.

- From Itaewon Station (Exit 1), take subway Line 6 towards Cheonggu Station, transfer subway Line 5 towards Wangsimni Station, transfer subway BUNDANG LINE – yellow line (K212) towards Apgujeongrodeo Station (Exit 3). Keep walking straight and when you see the MCM flagship store (you won't miss it), you'll know that you're on the right track. As you walk further down, you'll see the OLD SM Entertainment building on the opposite side of the road. Anyway, keep walking straight until see the huge intersection (it's the first one you'll see) and you'll find yourself standing in front of Burberry. Once you're there, immediately CROSS THE STREET TO THE LEFT SIDE (you'll be at the right side when you're in front of Burberry). Do not turn right, nor walk straight. Just immediately cross the street to the LEFT side.When you're at the other side of the street, just turn left and continue walking straight until you see a Baskin Robbins. Turn into the alley next to the Baskin Robbins and walk straight until you see a huge Dunkin Donuts on your left, turn left and you'll see JYP Entertainment! JYP and Cube are practically opposite to each other, and the Cube cafe is on the opposite side of Dunkin Donuts, (which means the opposite side of JYP). So, once you've turned left and reached JYP Entertainment, continue walking down the JYP Ent road (do NOT walk straight after passing by JYP nor turn right into Cube Cafe) and keep walking straight until you see FNC Entertainment on your right. Anyway, once you've passed by FNC Entertainment, continue walking STRAIGHT until you reach the end of the street. Turn right and walk straight for 2 minutes and you'll see SM Entertainment!

- From SM Ent. walk about 1km, around 16mins to Cheongdam Station, take subway Line 7 to Konkuk University Station, transfer to subway Line 2 to Samseong Station (Exit 5/6).

- From Samseong Station (Exit 5/6) → take subway Line 2 straight to Ewha Uni Station. (stop at Sindang Station to Sindang Tteokbokki Town at Exit 8, go straight until you reach Jungbu Fire Station and turn left)

- From Ewha/Hongik Uni Station, take subway Line 4 towards Hapjeong Station, transfer to subway Line 6 towards Itaewon Station (Exit 4) 14 min (8 stops).

DAY 3 – NAMI ISLAND – NANDAEMUN - MYEONGDONG – DOOTA- CHEONGGYECHEON STREAM

- From Itaewon Station (Exit 4), take subway Line 6 towards Sindang.

- When arriving at Sindang change to subway Line 2 and take the train heading towards Wangsimni Station.

- When arriving at Wangsimni Station, change to JUNGANG LINE - blue line and take the train heading towards Cheong-nyangni to get to Mangu Station.

- When arriving at Mangu Station, change to KYEONGCHUN LINE – blue line and take the train heading towards Galmae Station to get to Gapyeong Station, which is our destination.

- From Wangsimni Station, take subway line 2 to Dongdaemun History & Culture Park, change to subway line 4 to Hoehyeon Station.

- From Hoehyeon Station (Exit 5), turn right/behind the exit and walk straight to Nandaemun market (E-Lengddang building-green orange) → Ahjumma Chung Cho #209

- Namdaemun Market (남대문시장) → Samick Fashion Town (삼익패션타운) → MESA (메사) →

- From Dongdaemun(Exit 5/8)/Dongdaemun History and Culture Park Station(Exit 14), take subway Line 1/Line 5 to Dongmyo/Cheonggu Station, transfer to subway Line 6 to Itaewon Station (Exit 4).

DAY 4 – LOTTE WORLD – BANPO HANGANG PARK - HANGANG RIVER (Banpo Bridge)

- From Itaewon Station (Exit 4), then take subway Line 6 towards Sindang Station, transfer to subway Line 2 towards Seongsu Station ( 성수역 ) , then walk to Lotte World about 300m.

- From Seongsu Station subway Line 2 → transit at Konkuk Uni Station → take Subway Line 4 to Express Bus Terminal Station (Exit 8-1).

비빔밥 bibimbap Bibimbap A signature Korean dish meaning

“mixed rice”. Served as a bowl of

warm white rice topped with namul

egg and sliced meat (usually beef) are

common additions. The ingredients

are stirred together thoroughly just

before eating. In 2011, Bibimbap was

listed number 40 of the World’s 50

most delicious foods readers’ poll

(CNN Travel).

Chopped octopus and vegetables

Then they are fried altogether.

Octopus is a low-calorie food

for stamina. In Korea, nakji

bokkeum is served spicy so

people usually eat shellfish

soup with it to reduce the

sensation of hotness. Mugyo-

dong in Seoul has been

famous for its delicious nakji

bokkeum restaurants since

the 1960s.

파전 pa jeon Green

Pancake

Pajeon is a variety of jeon with green

onions as its prominent ingredient, as

pa literally means ‘green/spring onion’

in Korean. It is a pancake-like Korean

dish made from a batter of eggs,

wheat flour, rice flour, green onions,

and often other additional ingredients

depending on the variety. Beef, pork,

kimchi, shellfish, and other seafood

are mostly used. If one of these

ingredients, such as squid, dominates

the jeon, the name will reflect that; oh

jing uh jeon is ‘squid jeon.’

In most cases, Pa jeon don’t

have any meat in it. But ask

your waiter just to be safe

6. Porridge

Porridge is a super healthy option. Go to 본죽(Bon juk) or other porridge specialty restaurants and order non-meat

porridge. One of the side dish, 장조림(jangjorim, 장조림 영문명) include beef so ask them to leave it out. Their special red pickled radish side dish is good!

seaweed, and is an uncommon

ingredient to many foreginers. It is a

very thin, stringy seaweed, which

results in a greenish color to the

porridge.

Jjambbong is a Korean version of the

Chinese dish “hot and sour soup”,

without the sourness. Commonly made

with various seafood including shells,

octopus, and shrimp.

be a “healing food”. Nokdu is a

common ingredient for rice cakes, or
