The Ocial Code o Georgia Aotated (OCGA) listsevery law o Georgias books, with each statute out-liig the criteria required or a perso to be crimiallycharged with that oese. However, just because a persohas met the legal criteria, they may ot be charged with acrime, as law eorcemet ocers have the authority to ex-

ercise proessioal discretio i the ivestigative process. That discretio has bee exemplied by the recet schoolweapos icidets, with oly oe o ve childre whohave bee i possessio o such either a kie or gu ac-ig a crimial charge.

Accordig to Spaldig Couty Sheri Wedell Beam, there is o certai age at which a child will be charged witha crime, but there are actors routiely take ito cosid-eratio.

What we go by is the age ad metal capacity o thechild k owig right rom wrog, he said. Thats usually

aroud seve or eight. I most cases, childre i that agebracket kow right rom wrog, ad the school systemteaches them theyre ot to brig weapos to school.

He said it is ot a decisio lightly made, ad that it is attimes made ater persoel seeks outside cousel.

I theres ay questio, a lot o times, what well do, is calli a ivestigator rom the Crimial Ivestigatio Divisio.I theres still ay cosideratio or claricatio to be made, theyll actually call the District Attoreys Oce ad speak

with its sta to get their isight o it, Beam said. But theagai, whe the acts o the scee meet the criteria theelemets o that crime a lot o times, the deputy will goahead ad make the arrest.

He wet o to say that he is uaware o ay statutoryrequiremet that could be iterpreted as "zero tolerace"that would madate a law eorcemet ocer brig charg-es agaist a child, eve whe the criteria is met to do so.

Im ot amiliar with them i ay exists, but rom past ex-periece, atiowide, whe weapos have bee brought

The teacher, the pricipal, o oegave me the impressio he was aproblem studet a tickig timebomb othig but the typical mis-behavior, he said. For this child, ithis situatio, havig talked to theparets ad the little boy, I thoughtthe 10-day suspesio was adequate.Phillips said the law cocerigschool weapos icidets do ot ul-liy ocers discretio, which is whathe exercised i the Atkiso case.

I thik there is ocer discretio. Ithik it should be weighed case-by-case, depedig o each child, hesaid. Im ot goig to go with a zerotolerace policy ad say all studetsmust be charged. I it had bee a gu,it would have bee dieret. I kow a

kie is a weapo, but little boys playwith kives. However, he did say i he had received

dieret iput rom the schools sta,a dieret decisio would have beemade.I the pricipal had demaded it ad

said, We wat him charged, I wouldthave elt that I had ay choice but tole charges, because the school wasthe victim, he said. But to lock themup ad throw away the key? Come o.

The discretio o a deputy sheri re-sulted i a opposite outcome or theemale Rehoboth Middle School stu-det, who was arrested ad chargedwith possessio o a weapo at a pub-lic school a eloy.

Spaldig Couty Sheri WedellBeam, whose oce ivestigated that

icidet, said the 12-year-old sixth-grader, described as a hoors stu-det with o prior discipliary history, gave o idicatio she possessed thekie or ay reaso other tha to useit durig luch.

It appears she had brought the kie

to school to peel a peach. The ives-tigatio did ot reveal that ayoe

was threateed or that there was ayitet to threate or harm ayoe.

Theres o idicatio whatsoever thatthe little girl was havig ay problemwith ay other studet at school,Beam said. Its uortuate that thechild brought the kie to school orthat purpose, but evertheless, shebrought a weapo to school, adthereore, the charge was made.

I earlier school weapos icidets, ocials were alerted to the iractioby other cocered studets. How-ever, i this icidet, the realizatioresulted rom what could have beecosidered a dagerous situatio.

Aother studet saw the kie, grabbed it rom her ad bega wav-ig it aroud, Beam said. I dot be-lieve he threateed ayoe with it; he

was just playig aroud. He said school sta the iterveedad the ivestigative process bega.Beam said he was ucertai i thegirls paret was preset as the girlwas questioed.

Her paret was otied ad I be-lieve they did make cotact with theschool resource ocer, he said. Theydiscussed it with the juveile ad thethe they discussed it with the juve-iles mother at the school.

Georgia law does ot require that aparet be preset whe a juveile isquestioed as part o a crimial ives-tigatio.

Followig the girls iterview, shewas trasported to the Sheri s Ocei a deputys patrol car.

She was trasported because beigthe oese it is, there are certai pro-cedures that have to be doe at theSheris Oce, Beam said.

He wet o to explai that a stu-dets age ad their uderstadigo right ad wrog are actors used idetermiig whether charges will be

brought agaist a studet.I cases like this, that was take ito

cosideratio, he said.He wet o to say that his oce does

ot have a set stadard or policy thatoutlies how persoel are to addressthese types o icidets, but are ratherviewed o a case-by-case basis, withstate law beig the stadard.

We just basically go by the law. Imot sayig we have a ocial policy,

but as a stadard rule, I would alwaysexpect the law to be eorced as itswritte, Beam said.

Beam reported that the male Re-hoboth Road studet who hadgrabbed the kie ad waved itaroud was ot arrested ad chargedwith possessio o a weapo at a pub-lic school.

The other (male) studet who gotthe kie, Im told hes goig to acediscipliary actio i the school orthat, Beam said.

He did ot have urther iorma-tio o why ivestigators i his o-ce elected ot to charge the malestudet with the same crime as theemale studet.

Whe asked about the disparity,Assistat Superitedet Jim Smithreiterated that law eorcemet i-

vestigatios are separate rom schooldiscipliary actio.

That may be what law eorcemetdetermied. Law eorcemet is co-tacted ad they make their determi-atio o what they eed to do, Smithsaid. The (girls) 10-day suspesio is

just the schools part. Im ot sure howthey (the Sheris Oce) came to that.We report to the proper agecy, so Imot sure how they came to that deci-sio.

O the our weapos icidets i-volvig ve studets this year, schoolocials have released discipliary i-ormatio o two childre. They areow decliig to release the sameiormatio o the remaiig threestudets, icludig iormatio per-taiig to the disparity betwee the

Rehoboth Road Middle School kieicidet, as well as how it relates tothe Atkiso Elemetary School ici-det ivolvig a studet o the sameage.

Let us be still so wemay hear the whis-pers o God.

These words are writteacross a woode plaquerestig i my suroom, ad Isee them daily. Yet, still I ca

orget to heed them. I kewthis very article was alreadypast due, but I cotiued tostare at a blak scree.

Its a discouragig eelig-- to be uispired. Adthis is exactly what happesto me whe I ail to be still.Whe I ail to slow dow. Tootice. To watch, careully, lie happeig aroud me.Istead, I ca d myselwakig up with the sole i-tet o just makig the dayhappe... istead o otic-ig the day.

I become a participator ilie more tha a observer.Participatig is ecessary. But we dot participatewell whe we dot take the

time to observe well.Whe Im a observer, I am

livig i the ow momets.I am careul how I respodto those aroud me. I amcareul with my toe.

I am careul to otice my8-year-olds hads as shescoops the horse eed itothe buckets ad the care-ul to watch her walk acrossthe eld to be a source olove or those large aimals.

I am careul to otice myhusbads ace ad see thathe eeds my ecourage-met.

I am careul to otice thesigle mother i the storewho cat pay or all o her

Im careul to otice howbig the sky is ad to try to

I am careul to observe lie.To otice it. To be thakulor it. Ad, to participatewell i it. Because, Im still.I still my thoughts. I still mybody. Ad, I hear His whis-pers i the midst o all thatis goig o aroud me. I seeHim i the big thigs adi the small thigs. Ad, so,

    Observing Life

Without a doubt, juic-ig has become morepopular. More people are

jumpig o the juicigbad-wago ad equippigtheir kitche with a juiceextractor so they ca makeresh ruit ad vegetable

    juice wheever they like.

May people probablydidt kow that juicighas bee aroud log be-ore they might have beebor. The norwalk Juicer, the world's rst juicer, wasiveted i the 1930s by Dr.norma Walker. For moretha 70 years, Dr. Walker studied livig oods, maily ruitsad veggies, to develop a philosophy whereby the bestway to utritioal health was with a diet o predomiatelyraw ood ad juices, which he labeled The Livig Food. The norwalk is still sold today, alog with may other ad-aptatios or improvemets o the rst product to makepeople wat to buy it.

May people ask me i juicig is a good idea, ad whatshould they use i they decide to try it. The aswer I usuallygive is, there are always pros ad cos to juicig, ad aterlookig at both you should determie i juicig is right oryou.

Oe o the pros o juicig is that it ca be a healthy adbeecial way or some people to get their ruits ad veg-gies i they caot get them ay other way, especiallypicky eaters like kids or older adults with demetia.

I you have close-to-expirig produce, juicig ca pro-vides a quick alterative to throwig out ad wastigmoey you spet o groceries.

Aother beet to juicig is the sugar o the ruit cahide other great, ot-so-tasty igrediets to make a morecomplete ad llig meal.

Supporters o juicig also state some possible pros suchas boostig the immue system, better absorptio outriets, detoxicatio, reducig the risk o cacer, adweight loss, but these claims have ever bee scieti-cally prove. Aother pro or juicig is you are makig thedrik yoursel, thereore you kow the juice is made rom100 percet ruit juice i you are usig just the ruit ad o

added sugar or sweeteers. However, whe ruits ad veggies are juiced, the process

results i ewer vitamis ad mierals because the utri-et-rich ski is let behid by removig the pulp, whichcotais ber. Uless youre bledig whole ruits advegetables i a bleder, or addig aother ber source likefaxseed back ito the juice, youre losig much o the pulpad ber whe you press juice. This roughage is oe o thebiggest beets o ruits ad vegetables, ad its beig let

out i the juicig process.Just because you are juicig, does ot mea you will loseweight, You actually may eat more overall calories, whichwill lead to weight gai ad icreased blood glucose. Justlike ay other meal, its importat to cosider servig sizesad sugar cotet.

A small to medium-small piece o ruit has about 60 calo-ries (o bigger tha a baseball). Oe cup o o-starchyvegetables (like spiach) has about 25 calories. Ay 60-cal-orie servig rom 100 percet ruit juice equals about ourouces (about cup). A typical juicig is usually 12 to 16ouces. I you are juicig our or ve ruits to reach thatmark, the calories will start addig up.

Juicig also produces a cocetrated source o aturalsugars rom the ruit. I you cosume it without ay otherood, juice passes relatively quickly through your stomachto your small itestie, where the both the utriets adthe sugar are rapidly absorbed ad ca cause the bloodsugar to rise very quick. That ca be ot healthy or peo-ple who are diabetic ad tryig to maitai or watch highblood sugar. The biggest co to juicig ca be the time ad cost. A

juicer aloe ca cost rom $50 to $500, depedig o whatyou are lookig or. You also have to buy lots o ruits adveggies to make juice.I reality juicig is ot ecessary i you just eat oe or two

pieces o ruits ad three to ve o-starchy veggies i theday to save time ad moey.

I the ed i you decide to juice, remember to add thigsto it to make it a more balaced, complete meal or sack. For example, add the appropriate servig size or a healthylea protei ad ber such as groud faxseed, peautbutter, pasteurized egg whites i the carto or plai lowat yogurt.

Be sure to talk to your doctor ad dietitia beore start-ig juicig i order to prevet potetial drug ad utrietiteractios.

Does juicing do your body justice?

We have all bee there: tossigad turig through the ight, solvig all o the worlds problemsexcept your ow, ad watchig somedigital clock tell you how close you areto havig to get up ad start the dayphysically wrecked.

May o us lead ast-paced lives.

We have resposibilities at work, ithe amily, with rieds, at church, iproessioal associatios, at school, etc. Hours are log, but we push our-selves because we are goal-orietedad deeply araid o ailure or miss-ig a deadlie. Stress maagemet issomethig other people do who havemore time o their hads tha we do.Does this soud amiliar?Forty millio Americas have chroic

sleep disorders, ad about hal thatumber have occasioal sleep prob-lems. This results i approximately100,000 vehicle accidets, 1500deaths, ad 71,000 ijuries each year.I act, the Departmet o Trasporta-tio is about to impose sleep studieso truck drivers i a attempt to curbthe accidet rate.

Our bodies are desiged aroud cir-cadia rhythms. Scheduled processesi our bodies have to do with edo-crie uctios (hormoe secretio)that keep our bodies i workig order.Sleep is a part o this process.

Oe o the cosequeces o beigsleep deprived is that your brai justdoes ot work well. You may haveproblems thikig durig the daybecause you are just plai tired. Thiswill iterere with your work ad com-poud your stress.

It is also true that iadequateamouts o sleep will help you gaiweight. Over time, the combiatioo stress, iterruptio o those circa-dia rhythms, ad sleep deprivatiomay well lead you dow the road toobesity ad all o the problems associ-

ated with it, icludig cardiovasculardisease, diabetes, or cacer.

Studies have show that log peri-ods i rot o the televisio, com-

puter, or Iteret produce sleep de-privatio ad childre. They go to bedlater, sleep ewer hours, ad eel tiredthe ext day.

What ca you do? First, o week-eds, try to go to bed at the sametime you do o weekights. This helpsyou to stay o some semblace o aschedule. I you exercise i the eve-ig, give yoursel at least three hourscool-dow time beore goig to bed.Avoid brai stimulatio, icludigwork, balacig a checkbook, com-puter games, etc. or three hours be-ore retirig.

Some people have a sleep ritual de-siged to ehace relaxatio, such asa bubble bath. Music is a tool you maywat to employ, as research tells us ithelps childre, older adults, ad criti-cally ill patiets to rest.

Take a resh look at your mattress. Isit comortable? Does it sag? Do youawake eelig like you have justplayed ootball? I so, come over tothe cliic ad check out our memory

oam mattress. We will give you a sam-ple ap.Some o our patiets report that they

awake with pai i the eck, back,or extremities. noctural pai may besigicat beyod the musculoskel-etal system, so we should check thatout with a good exam.

I you sleep with or ear someoe,d out i you sore. I you soreloudly ad d yoursel allig asleepi the daytime, you may have sleepapea. It is a commo problem, ad apotetially serious oe. We ca do asleep study or you i you have thoseissues.

We have used a mild muscle relaxerwith our patiets that may be helpul. It cotais valeria, which will helpyou to relax ad sleep more aturallywithout a hagover the ext day. Wehave also supplemeted with mela-toi to help restore atural circadiarhythms. I typically discuss sleepigposture with our patiets as well. Istrogly recommed sleepig oyour side with a pillow that is rmad tall eough to keep your headlevel with the rest o your body. Ad-ditioally, I recommed that you geta body pillow ad throw your up-per kee ad arm over it so that theweight o your extremities is take oyour spie. Whe you roll over, takethe body pillow with you so that youare supported through the ight. Youmay d that you are much betterrested the ext day.

I you are havig issues gettigeough rest, you may ot actually re-alize it. You may oly kow that you

just eel tired all the time. I you do,get it checked out to be sure it is otsomethig more serious. We ca helpyou address this problem to ehaceyour health ad overall quality-o-lie.
