Get ready for a season of singers, saxophones, trumpets and trombones as we present Sunday Jazz, held each month at Middlesbrough Town Hall.

Following the success of the Jazz Weekender in 2018, we’re bringing you an even bigger programme of great jazz groups and duos. Each month we’ll explore different jazz styles, showcasing everything from toe tapping classics to modern jazz fused with rock, funk and soul.

Whether you’re an aficionado, a budding musician or you just want to get to know jazz a bit better, we have something just right for you.

New to the world of jazz? Our special events are the perfect starting point!

Our Jazz Special in October is a full-day extravaganza including morning jazz choir workshops that anyone can join, a free stage in the Fire Station and two ticketed performances in the Main Hall. Go to page 6 to find out more.

Celebrate the festive season with A Jazzy Christmas, the perfect performance for the whole family to enjoy, featuring all your favourite Christmas tunes. Go to page 10 to find out more.

We herald the coming of Burns Night in January with an all-Scottish line-up! Enjoy the energy of the Scottish jazz scene through four bands, each offering a different and exciting approach to the genre. Go to page 12 to find out more.

EMMA JOHNSON’S GRAVY BOATLeeds-based saxophonist and composer Emma Johnson and her band write and perform melodic jazz that anyone can enjoy.

Emma offers contemporary sound rooted in infectious melodies. The band have self-funded and released their debut EP (2017) and are currently sailing around the UK before setting to work on their debut album due in 2020.

NOEL DENNIS TRIOLecturer, professional jazz trumpeter and flugelhorn player Noel Dennis not only leads his own ensembles but also plays alongside leading British jazz players including Andy Sheppard, Tommy Smith and Tim Garland.

His main musical influences include Miles Davis, Bill Evans and Herbie Hancock. Noel is joined by Andy Champion on double bass and Paul Edis on piano. 

ANTHONY STRONG

10 years, 4 albums and over 300 shows since his debut, British singer-pianist Anthony Strong is a charismatic singer, a swinging pianist and, above all, a consummate performer.

His new album, ‘Me And My Radio’ shares his love of great music, regardless of style. From jazz and blues through to Motown and soul, songs made famous by Louis Armstrong, Charlie Chaplin and Ella Fitzgerald sit alongside those by Stevie Wonder and Johnny Cash, plus a sprinkling of originals which could easily have come from a bygone era.

The brilliant Lindsay Hannon leads a vocal workshop translating jazz standards into group arrangements, open both to beginners interested in having a go at this music style and seasoned jazz vocalists. Ability to read music notation is not required.

ZOE GILBY AND ANDY CHAMPIONSinger Zoe Gilby appears here with her husband, the innovative and powerful double bassist Andy Champion, to create beautifully integrated music, breathing fresh life into the familiar as well as heading off into new territory. Inspired by the legendary American singer, Sheila Jordan, this exciting project has been taking audiences by storm.

TOMMY SMITH AND BRIAN KELLOCKSaxophonist and OBE award winner Tommy Smith and Scottish Jazz award-winning pianist Brian Kellock are Scotland’s international jazz ambassadors, wowing audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. Expect revitalised standards and ballads played with passion and tenderness, presented by musicians with a friendship and professional relationship of thirty years standing.

GWILYM SIMCOCK Traveling the world as a member of US jazz guitar legend Pat Metheny’s quartet, British pianist Gwilym Simcock used time away from the stage to compose dedicated pieces to fellow pianists.

SCOTTISH NATIONAL JAZZ ORCHESTRA FEATURING BRIAN KELLOCKIt’s time to swing, as the award-winning Scottish National Jazz Orchestra with pianist Brian Kellock invite you to celebrate the extraordinary music of three great jazz legends: Count Basie, Duke Ellington and ‘Fats’ Waller.

Singers from the Jazz Choir Workshop will kick off the Free Stage programme with a short performance, followed by a second band yet to be confirmed.

ABBIE FINN TRIOLeeds College of Music graduates and rising stars Abbie Finn (drums) and Harry Keeble (tenor sax) feature in this new trio with veteran bassist Paul Grainger, playing a mix of Latin tunes, music by artists such as Michael Brecker, Joe Henderson and Dexter Gordon, plus a couple of originals.

HAND TO MOUTH With the discovery of a mutual love of Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass, guitarist Bradley Johnston and singer Lindsay Hannon have joined forces to recreate some classic hits, such as “A Foggy Day”, “That Old Feeling” and “The One I Love (Belongs To Somebody Else)”.

FRANCIS TULIP QUARTETThe Francis Tulip Quartet was formed in 2017, immediately making a big impact on the local jazz scene.

Band leader and guitarist Francis brings influences from modern jazz through to jazz funk and rock, with Ben Lawrence complementing with his vibrant piano skills. Michael Dunlop (bass) and remarkable drummer Kai Chareunsy provide the basis for strong groove and musical exploration.

BINKER GOLDING BAND Binker Golding is well known for playing saxophone in the duo Binker & Moses. Golding’s new band features his own compositions: jazz and fusion sounds from the 80s and early 90s mixed with contemporary London jazz with double bass, piano and drums.

Expect an exciting array of music, taking influence from Michael Brecker to Barry White.

NOYA RAOLeeds-based electronic-soul quartet, Noya Rao, have been noted as one of the rising talents of the UK Jazz scene, and we totally agree.

The band garnered early support from Gilles

Peterson and have enjoyed radio play from Mary Anne Hobbs and Jamie Cullum.

Vocalist Olivia Bhattacharjee, drummer Matt Davies, bassist Jim Wiltshire and keys player and producer Tom Henry combine a vintage aesthetic with contemporary songwriting. The result is a fresh and unique sound.

JAMBONESage Gateshead’s youth jazz ensemble Jambone, directed by renowned jazz pianist and composer Paul Edis, are with us this Decemeber.

Jambone comprises trumpet, trombone, saxophone and flute sections locked together by piano, guitar, bass and drums. The musical mission of the band is to provide a range of repertoire and performance challenges for its members, many of whom have gone on to professional jazz careers.

PAUL EDIS’S JAZZY CHRISTMAS FEATURING SINGER JO HARROP Get into the Christmas spirit with ‘A Jazzy Christmas’, featuring new arrangements of festive favourites penned by Paul Edis and performed by some of the leading lights of the UK jazz scene, including Jo Harrop, Matt Anderson, Emma Fisk and special guests.

JOE WILLAMSON’S ‘ANIMAL SOCIETY’ Animal Society is a new sound in UK jazz, somewhere in the void between Rage Against The Machine, Pat Metheny and EST.

FERGUS MCCREADIE TRIOPianist Fergus McCreadie, bassist David Bowden and drummer Stephen Henderson make up one of the most exciting young bands in European jazz.

Playing music that reflects the Scottish landscape and traditions while honouring the American and Nordic jazz legacies, they have brought audiences to their feet across Northern Europe and won the Best Album title for their debut, Turas, at the Scottish Jazz Awards 2019.

Ahead of Burns Night, we kick off the 2020 Sunday Jazz series with a celebration of the energy of the Scottish jazz scene through four contrasting bands.

GEORGIA CÉCILETipped as ‘One to Watch’ by BBC Introducing, and winner of ‘Best Vocalist’ Award at the 2019 Scottish Jazz Awards, singer Georgia Cécile is receiving acclaim from audiences and critics alike.

Inspired by a range of musical influences including Sarah Vaughan, Nina Simone and Stevie Wonder, Cécile is currently working on her debut album.

TOM BANCROFT’S ‘IN COMMON’ This exciting project developed by musician/educator Tom Bancroft starts with the bodhran and the tabla and a drone, adds Indian Classical Violin and improvising jazz guitar, and continues adding layers and voices from different traditions, in a creative project that focuses on the common ground between Scottish music, jazz, Indian music and electronica.

MARK WILLIAMS TRIOThe Mark Williams Trio draws influences from jazz, blues, rock, fusion and metal to create original music that is unique, diverse and honest. With the use of loops and effects, the band are able to create an atmospheric ambience that brings the compositions, improvisation and interplay to a different plane to that of a standard jazz guitar trio. 

ARCHIPELAGOAward-winning, genre-blending Tyneside trio Archipelago take audiences on a journey through chaos, freedom, joy and darkness. Playing extensively across the UK, they’ve also created a residency gig series for female-identifying artists to make new music “Between Waves”. Archipelago have recently played Latitude festival on the BBC Introducing Stage.

ARUN GHOSH BAND British-Asian clarinettist, composer and twice winner of ‘Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year’, Arun Ghosh is here to captivate the audience with his passionate and dynamic style, eloquent musical expression and charismatic rock ‘n’ roll spirit.

Described by Ravi Shankar as “a natural born improviser”, the clarinettist is an innovator of the modern IndoJazz style, fluidly incorporating jazz, rock, folk, and South Asian influences. Arun Ghosh’s melodic outpourings and freewheeling improvisations create an intensely charged group sound.

NISHLA SMITHNishla’s live sets include a breathtaking variety of material, from celebrated originals to dark jazz standards and devastating ballads. Her often dreamy and melancholic aura is offset by her energetic and imaginative band of Manchester’s finest young contemporary improvisers including Aaron Wood on trumpet, Richard Jones on piano, Joshua Cavanagh-Brierley on bass and Johnny Hunter on drums.

The Nishla Smith Quintet is a Jazz North Northern Line ambassador ensemble supported by Jazz North using public funding from Arts Council England.

TEES VALLEY YOUTH JAZZ COLLECTIVEThis Teesside-based youth jazz ensemble were reformed by the Tees Valley Youth Service in 2018, and performed with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra at the Jazz Weekender last October. Tees Valley Youth Jazz Collective have worked with Nikki Iles and Nick Smart of the Nikki Iles Jazz Orchestra in preparation for this amazing event.

NIKKI ILES JAZZ ORCHESTRA 

Following memorable performances at the Jazz Weekender, award-winning pianist and composer Nikki Iles returns to Middlesbrough at the start of her first national tour, with her brand new 20-piece Jazz Orchestra. 

With Nikki herself on piano and leading a band of trumpets, saxophones, trombones, guitar and bass, this show marks a new chapter in her long and distinguished career in British Jazz, gathering together commissions from over the years.

Any customer who requires a Personal Assistant to be present in order for them to access the venue and evacuate it in an emergency, is entitled to a free ticket for their assistant.

Qualifying documentation must be shown as proof of this:

• A letter from the local authority confirming receipt of disability allowance

• Local authority disability pass – this does not include blue badges

• Local authority visual impairment card

• Disability rail card

• Doctor’s note (valid for 6 months)

Once you’ve presented your proof to the Box Office, you won’t need to show it again for 12 months from that date in order to be entitled to Personal Assistant tickets.

PARKINGMiddlesbrough Town Hall has no on-site parking, however parking is available throughout the town centre.

Council car parks

All council car parks are free after 6pm. Those close to the Town Hall include mima, on-street at Corporation Road, on-street at Albert Road, on-street at Baker and Bedford Streets, France Street (white bays), Buxton Street, and Gurney Street.

Cleveland Centre

Visitors to the Town Hall during the evening can park at the nearby Cleveland Centre car park for just £1.50 between 6pm and midnight.

Disabled (Blue Badge) parking

Blue Badge holders can park free of charge in any bay in Council operated car parks (apart from the designated electric vehicle-only bays in Zetland and Captain Cook Square multi-storey car parks).

Legislation also allows Blue Badge holders to park free of charge and without time limit in any on-street pay and display or limited waiting parking bays. This is clearly stated in the guidance issued to all blue badge holders
