Analyst public blogs and commentary

Gene Leganza, Forrester Research in itworld and PCWorld - "Broadly speaking, this brings two things to the table that weren't there before," said Gene Leganza, a vice president and research director with Forrester Research. First is "a really comprehensive cloud-based platform that brings together all the elements you'd need to drive data innovation," Leganza said. "It's data management, it's analytics, it's Watson, it's collaboration across different roles, and it's a method to get started. It's really comprehensive, and the fact that it's cloud-based means everyone has access. (Second) The platform's AI-based capabilities, meanwhile, can help users "drive to the next level of innovation with data," he said. Overall, it's "an enterprise architect's dream" because it could put an end to the ongoing need to integrate diverse products into a functioning whole" Leganza said.

Doug Henschen, Constellation Research in CMSWire - "What makes this compelling, according to Henschen, is DataWorks' "support for data governance, data sharing and collaboration across all these user personas, with shared metadata, data modeling and schema mapping." Henschen noted that this is IBM's effort "to span data silos with collaboration, overcome data-quality woes with shared data governance and metadata management and to overcome the complexities of deploying and maintaining myriad technologies with a cloud-based platform.”

Doug Henschen, Constellation blog - Strata + Hadoop World Highlights Long-Term Bets on Cloud“DataWorks offers user interfaces for data engineers (DataWorks Connect), data scientists (with Jupyter notebooks and RStudio as part of Data Science Experience), business analysts (Watson Analytics) and app developers  (BlueMix services). It’s largely a packaging of existing cloud services, but what makes it a platform is shared data and metadata access and governance and shared spaces for data modeling and analysis.”

Saugutuck Report - “IBM’s plans for theDataWorks fabric is impressive. It should serve as a leading tip of IBM’s market spear by integrating innovative data science breakthroughs from whatever source, while also delivering a drag-along tail for the installed base of Cognos, SPSS and other customers. Moreover, the DataWorks platform with its Watson interfaces now puts IBM well ahead of most competitors in terms of the breadth of access to easier to use, and interoperable technologies for data science, and its use as a Cloud service. What the company has assembled is now a gold standard: how long this will last is anyone’s guess.”

Charles King, Pund-IT: IBM DataWorks –Looking for (and Finding) the Next Big Data Thing - "More so than most other major vendors, IBM recognized that open source technologies and communities represent a fundamental shift in the way that individuals, groups and organizations create, utilize and benefit from technology. However, IBM also understands the value of its own technologies, and how resulting solutions and services can complement the efforts of the open source partners and communities. Project DataWorks is the result of just that sort of innovative collaborative engagement, and IBM customers will be the ultimate beneficiaries.

Notable tweetsCassandra Mooshian, TBR "This is so important -- orgs more likely to work w startups backed by open communities for continuity #datafirst "Geoff Woollacott, TBR, "DataWorks Platform = a virtual "Maker Space" for business insights.
