Gods Safety Net
On a variety of fronts, the American
economy is in trouble. Particularly dis-
turbing is the problem of long-term un-
employment. American business and
industry are not creating new jobs for
those who were laid off in the recent re-
cession. Consequently, Congress has been compelled by political necessity to
extend unemployment benefits to an
unprecedented 99 weeks, bail out teach-
ers and public employee unions to avoid
massive layoffs in education and gov-
ernment service, and at least contem-
plate subsidizing the mortgage payments
of many who are facing foreclosure.
Looming large over the entire national
economy is the specter of bankrupt enti-
tlement programs (Social Security and
Medicare) and pension funds. All of this
comes against the background of utterlyunmanageable national debt.
A common sentiment runs through-
out this entire morass of financial chaos:
desperation. We Americans have be-
come accustomed to security, an attitude
that borders on insisting that every
American has a right to an ever-
increasing standard of living. At least no
American should have to experience any
significant decline in his economic status
through no fault of his own. This sense
of entitlement has become so ingrainedin the American psyche that the very
thought of experiencing a loss of security
inspires terror in most people, a terror
that is compounded when their high debt
levels are factored in. Many Americans
live on the precipice of financial ruin.
Thats why most of them, including a
significant majority of evangelicals, have
bought into the promises of the progres-
sive welfare state.
So where does one look when he
loses his job and is unsuccessful in find-
ing another? And how are we to cope
with the prospect of a government forced
by financial realities to reign in its lar-
gesse? Who will take care of us when the
governments safety net shreds?
Christians need not panic because
God gives us the answer. He has pro-
vided a series of safety nets for His peo-
ple. But here is the problem. Because
God has been expelled from the public
squarebecause in the name of the sepa-
ration of church and state, biblical truth
is no longer admitted into the discussion,
much less embraced as the source of
public policythe only workable alterna-
tive to the governments safety net has
been ruled out. In spite of the govern-
ments hostility to biblical values, how-
ever, and in spite of the popular rejection
of biblical Christianity, the Christian
community has the opportunity to im-
plement Gods threefold safety net in
caring for each other.
The first safety net in Gods pro-
gram is the family. It is Gods ordained
plan that families provide for each other
in times of need. In no passage of Scrip-
ture is this stated any more clearly than
it is in 1 Timothy 5, a chapter the first
part of which is devoted to the support of
elderly widows. Their care was a high
priority in the church, but Paul explicitlyplaces the burden of their sustenance on
their families: if any widow has chil-
dren or grandchildren, they must first
learn to practice piety in regard to their
own family and to make some return to
their parents; for this is acceptable in the
sight of God (v. 4). Later, he says it
dogmatically: But if anyone does not
provide for his own, and especially for
those of his household, he has denied the
faith and is worse than an unbeliever (v.
8).
This obligation is the practical e
pression of the principle laid down
Ephesians 6:2-3, echoing the terms
the Fifth Commandment (Ex 20:12
Honor your father and mother (which
the first commandment with a promise
so that it may be well with you, and thyou may live long on the earth. David
a sterling example of providing for th
security of his parents when his own li
was threatened by Saul. He went to t
king of Moab and asked, Please let m
father and my mother come and st
with you until I know what God will
for me. Then he left them with the ki
of Moab; and they stayed with him
the time that David was in the stron
hold (1 Sam 22:3-4).
The principle works the other w
around as well, as Paul points out to th
Corinthians when he alludes to a gener
principle by way of illustrating his r
sponsibility as an apostle: for childr
are not responsible to save up for the
parents, but parents for their childre
(2 Cor 12:14). The bottom line here
that members of the family provide f
the economic needs of their relativ
who are not able to provide for them
selves. At this point, the sins of a godle
twentieth-century American culture a
now bearing fruit. Government poliprohibiting prayer and Bible reading
the schools, de-criminalizing adulte
and prostitution, facilitating easily o
tained divorce, refusing to enforce a
mony and child-support laws, and pr
viding public assistance for broken fam
lies have all contributed to the destru
tion of the nuclear family. Furthermor
it is more common than not for childre
once they reach adulthood, to move aw
from their parents, and several gener
tions of separation have virtually d

stroyed the extended family. Thus,
without any support structure from their
families, Americans now look to the gov-
ernment as their provider of last resort.
Plainly, that is not the way God intended
human beings to survive in times of
need. Difficult as it may be in some
cases, biblically committed Christians
still take their family obligations seri-
ously. But what if the family fails in itsresponsibility?
The second safety net in Gods pro-
gram is the church. Under the Law, the
covenant community was to care for
each other. On the one hand, Moses said
to Israel: However, there will be no
poor among you, since the Lord will
surely bless you in the land . . .(Dt 15:4).
How was this to become a reality?
Moses goes on to say, For the poor will
never cease to be in the land; therefore I
command you, saying, You shall freely
open your hand to your brother, to yourneedy and poor in your land (v. 11).
Gods people must care for Gods people.
The same ethic applies to the
church. Its members are to care for one
another (1 Cor 12:24-26). The early
church set the pattern: For there was
not a needy person among them, for all
who were owners of land or houses
would sell them and bring the proceeds
of the sales and lay them at the apostles
feet, and they would be distributed to
each as any had need (Acts 4:34-35).The support they provided for the needy
was therefore often a matter of sacrifice
on the part of the more affluent mem-
bers.
In 1 Timothy 5:16, Paul addresses
the support of elderly widows who have
younger female relatives: If any woman
who is a believer has dependent widows,
she must assist them and the church
must not be burdened, so that it may
assist those who are widows indeed. By
this, the Apostle means that even single
women who have older women relatives
who are widowed must care for theirneedy family members, freeing up the
church to assist those who genuinely
have no other means of support. In this
chapter, Paul reminds the church that
they are to enroll godly widows over 60
years of age, women distinguished by
fervent prayer lives, by a record of suc-
cessful child rearing, hospitality to
strangers, ministry to fellow believers,
and devotion to good works. Apparently
in exchange for their godly service and
influence, these women would be sup-
ported by the gifts of the church. Thus, the church is to look after
those of their number who are unable to
support themselves and who have no one
else to care for them. One local church
may not be able to provide full support
for everyone who needs it, but along with
the extended families of those in need, it
can help make up what is lacking. Again,
however, our culture has rejected this
biblical provision. Since today the ma-
jority of Americans are not affiliated with
any church, they have deprived them-
selves of this God-given resource.
Most importantly, however, the
third safety net in Gods program is God
himself. So what happens when a Chris-
tian is without a job, without financi
resources, without the possibility of fam
ily help and part of a church which ca
not provide significant assistanc
Again, it was David who said: For
if] my father and my mother have fo
saken me, [But] the Lord will take m
up (Psa 27:10). In his senior years
could say, I have not seen the righteo
forsaken or his descendants beggi bread (Psa 37:25). The Apostle P
affirmed the same truth to the Philipp
ans when he wrote, And my God w
supply all your needs according to H
riches in glory in Christ Jesus (Ph
4:19). Many Christians can testify to t
truth of these verses. Even when there
nowhere else to look for help, the Lord
able to provide in utterly unpredictab
ways. God will take care of His peop
who live responsibly, trusting in Him
meet their needs.
Our spiritually bankrupt nation hfinally become a financially bankru
nation. The tragedy is that so many pe
ple are suffering as a result. And y
there is a potential silver lining to th
otherwise dark cloud. When the eco
omy falters and when the governmen
safety nets collapse, there is One wh

Christians have the opportunity both

been with WorldVenture serving in
Lithuania since
1997. They have
planted churches, have developed rela-

God has answered many prayers with
new friends and many opportunities to
share the gospel.
But they are now back in the U.S.
and will be with the WRBC on Septem-

that God will guide her as she makes
decisions regarding where to live and
which university to attend, and also that

Getting Acquainted with Florence Acerra
I can do all things through Christ who
strengthens me. Philippians 4:13 is
Florence Acerras favorite Bible versea
verse that reflects her hidden strength of
character and stamina to accept lifes
responsibilities as they might oc-
curand they did occur as we shall see.
Florence was born August 21, 1929
in the Prospect Park area of Brooklyn to
parents Dominick and Maria Milillo.
She was the youngest of five children,
with two sistersGrace and Jose-
phineand two brothersRalph and
Anthony.
Dominick Milillo, her father, worked
as a gravestone cutter and engraver.
Cutting and engraving the gravestones
was hazardous to her fathers health as
the dust from the cutting of the grave
stones filled his lungs. Her father devel-oped tuberculosis and died at the young
age of 50; Florence was only 10 years old
when he passed away.
Maria Milillo was a devoted
mother/housewife but became ill which
limited her ability to take care of the
home. Responsibilities increasingly fell
on Florence as a high school student and
she felt pressured to quit school after 10 th
grade. She accepted the full responsibil-
ity of the family; cooking and shopping
as well as taking care of her Mom.In taking on so much responsibility
at such a young age, Florence held on to
the dear memories she had of her Father
and Mother taking her to the beach by
train and those wonderful dinners with
the family and friends on Christmas Eve.
It was not long before Florence
joined the workforce first at Bulova
Watch Co., assembling watches; later as
a school aid; and her last job sorting pa-
per products at Artistic Industries.
As a young girl, Florences girlfriendlived around the corner and on occasion
the two of them along with a group of
othersincluding her girlfriends
brother would hang out together. The
brother, Felix Acerra, developed a secret
crush on Florence but was too shy to
pursue it. Subsequently, Felix was in-
ducted into the USNR during WWII.
Upon Felixs discharge from the service,
Felix rekindled his interest in Florence
and it was at a Christmas party in his
home that he took advantage of some
mistletoe, expressing his feelings for her.
They began dating and in time Felix pro-
posed. They were married on September
12, 1953.
They settled in Queens to begin rais-
ing a family and had three girls: Andrea
(now 55), Michele (now 52), and Cheryl(now 49). After about 10 years, the fam-
ily moved to Smithtown and bought a
larger house to accommodate a growing
family. The girls were now in school and
Florence began longing to have a baby in
the home again.
Observing friends of theirs who were
caring for foster children is what
prompted the Acerras to do the same.
After much discussion, they applied to
become foster parents. It was not long
after that a five-day-old baby girl arrivedat their home to be placed under their
care. They felt so blessed. Because this
was a foster child, adoption plans were
under way for another family to adopt
this little baby. As a result, the baby
would only remain with the Acerras for a
short while10 months to be exact. Co-
inciding with the Acerras adjustment in
giving up the baby girl was the news that
Florence was pregnant, which made the
adjustment much easier. Nine months
later, they had a son, Paul (now 44).
With a family of four children, the Acer-ras remained in Smithtown for 24 years.
Both Florence and Felix had been
raised Catholics unaware of the Biblical
truths. Together they began listening to
television evangelists and in 1987 made a
confession of faith in the Lord Jesus
Christ.
After Felixs retirement, they moved
to Chattanooga, TN and attended the
Woodland Park Baptist Church where
one of their daughters and her husband
attended. They also took classes at K
Arthurs Ministries to further st
Gods Word.
They remained in Tennessee for fo
years before moving to Harleysville, P
to be near the oldest daughter and h
family. There they were both baptized
the Faith Bible Fellowship Church. Th
remained in Pennsylvania for five yea
before moving to Leisure Glen, right he
on Long Island.
When they moved into the area, th
began looking for a house of worship an
became aware of the WRBC. Their fi
visit was on Fathers Day and they we
impressed by the friendliness of the co
gregation and by Pastor Glass teachin
They liked how Pastor Glass explain
the Scriptures in a way they could unde
stand. Now they have been at the WRB
for 10 years and both have served th
church well. Florence has done som
babysitting for mothers attending Bib
studies and Sunday School; has volu
teered to help with Awana and VBS; an
participates in many capacities in
quiet, behind the scenes way. She
faithful to the church and likes fellow
shipping with the church family.
When not involved with the chur
activities, Florence likes to attend a cramics class. She can also be found
her kitchen cooking up her favori
dishes or doing some
light gardening in her
garden. One of her fa-
vorite things to do is to
take a drive east with her
husband, stopping for lunch somewhe
along the way. Otherwise you will fi
Florence relaxing on her patio.
We sometimes under-appreciate o
seniors not only for their wisdom but f
what they have to offer. Florence isperfect example of this. She has a givi
heart, the willingness to serve, and th
spirit of a much younger lady than wh
her birth certificate reads. If you ha
ever had the privilege to work alongsi
her in the service of the church, you w
know that she is a joy to work with. W
are blessed to have her as a part of o
church family.

Antichrist and His KingdomPart 3: The Rise of His Kingdom: the Seven Heads and Ten Horns
So far, we have discovered that Anti-
christs rise to power begins at some un-
designated point following the Rapture
of the church, and by virtue of satanic
enablement, he embarks on an unprece-
dented reign of terror, wreaking his hate-
ful vengeance on Gods saints and upon
Israel, Gods chosen covenant nation. In
Revelation 17:1-8, his capital city is sym-
bolically represented as the Great Har-
lot. That city is a rebuilt Babylon in
Iraq which flourishes as the fabulously
wealthy showplace of the worlds su-
preme ruler. But his capital is also rep-
resented as a place of the most horrific
blasphemy, especially during the final
3 years of the Tribulation, following
his resurrection from the dead and his
indwelling by the demons of the abyss.
It remains for us to untangle the
mystery of the seven heads and ten
horns, the key to Antichrists identity.
That explanation is given in the last half
of Revelation 17. Here is the mind
which has wisdom. The seven heads are
seven mountains on which the woman
sits, and they are seven kings; five have
fallen, one is, the other has not yet
come; and when he comes, he must re-
main a little while. And the beast which
was and is not, is himself also an eighth
and is one of the seven, and he goes todestruction. And the ten horns which
you saw are ten kings, who have not yet
received a kingdom, but they receive
authority as kings with the beast for one
hour. These have one purpose; and they
give their power and authority to the
beast (Rev 17:9-13).
The angel tells John that the seven
heads represent seven mountains (v. 9).
These are not the seven hills of Rome,
as has been so often assumed, but, ac-
cording to verse 10, seven kings. Five
have fallen, one is, and the other has not yet come. According to the principle of
the analogy of Scripture (the Bible is its
own best interpreter), we are justified in
seeking biblical revelation concerning an
alliance of seven kingdoms during the
Day of the Lord (the Old Testament term
for the Tribulation). In fact, there is such
an alliance mentioned in Ezekiel 30.
There is no question as to the time
under consideration in this passage.
Ezekiel writes: The word of the Lord
came again to me, saying, Son of man,
prophesy and say, Thus says the Lord
God, Wail, Alas for the day!
For the day is near,Even the day of the Lord is near;
It will be a day of clouds, A time of doom for the nations
(Ezek 30:1-3).
This passage therefore pertains to the
seven-year period of the Tribulation.
Then the Lord pronounces judgment
upon a seven-kingdom coalition:
And a sword will come uponEgypt,
And anguish will be inEthiopia,When the slain fall in Egypt,They take away her wealth,
And her foundations are torn down.Ethiopia, Put, Lud, all Arabia,
Libya, andthe people of theland that is in league will
fall with them by the sword(vv. 4-5).
Who are these nations? The identi-
fication is not as clear as we would like,
but the identity is reasonably certain.
1. Egypt is the nation we know
today as Egypt.
2. Ethiopia (Cush) is not the
territory of modern Ethiopia, but em-braces the territory we know today as the
Sudan.
3. Put is thought by many to be
modern Libya, but others have specu-
lated Somaliland, which would include
modern Somalia on the horn of Africa,
and perhaps portions of modern Kenya.
4. Lud is probably Lyddia, or
modern Turkey.
5. All Arabia would designate the
territory we know as Saudi Arabia, and
perhaps modern Jordan.6. Libya (Cub). This name is
very obscure, but Egyptian inscriptions
mention a Kfa, a people from north of
Israel, probably between the Black and
Caspian Seas (kfa means mountains).
If this identification is correct, this re-
gion would include one or more of the
former Soviet states, Georgia, Armenia,
and Azerbaijan.
7. The people of the land that
is in league. Note that this is not the
name of a nation. Literally, this phra
reads, the sons of the land of the cov
nant. In other words, the descendan
of those who are living in the land whi
God had promised by the covenant
Israel. Apparently this indicates t
modern Palestinians.
Thus the confederation is made u
of Egypt, the Sudan, Libya (or Somali
Kenya), Turkey, Saudi Arabia-Jorda
Georgia-Armenia-Azerbaijan, and t
Palestinian Authority. The unifying fa
tors here are that today all of these n
tions are militantly Muslim and fierce
anti-Israel. From Johns first-centu
vantage point, apparently the first f
kingdoms had reached the pinnacle
their power and had gone into decli
(Rev 17:10). One was still prominenwhich points most likely to Egypt, whi
was still a major player in the Mid
East. One had not come into being at a
and that would be the Palestinian A
thority. Such, then, is the alliance of t
seven heads.
The ten horns are ten kings wh
have not yet received a kingdom (v. 12
Where in Scripture do we find a te
nation confederacy in the context of en
time prophecy? The answer is in t
vision of the colossus in Daniel 2.

the Babylonian Empire (he was the he
of gold), the Medo-Persian Empire (th
torso of silver), the Greek Empire (th
abdomen and thighs of bronze), and th
Roman Empire (legs of iron). See Dan
2:31-45.
The interesting feature of the Rom
Empire, however, is that it also includ
the feet, which were partly of iron an
partly of clay. Feet have ten toes, ind
cating that there is a second form of thcontinued on page

kingdom, which is confirmed by the an-
gel when he tells Daniel that it will be a
divided kingdom (v. 41). This future
form is comprised of ten parts made up
of iron, which is strong, and clay, which
is brittle (v. 42). They will combine
with one another in [or with] the seed of
men; but they will not adhere to one an-
other, even as iron does not combine
with potters (v. 43). Thus, there is amixed population coming from the terri-
tory of the former Roman Empire which
is beset by internal disunity, and religion
is a logical source of this tension.
Excluding the Middle Eastern na-
tions for the moment, the territory of the
Roman Empire includes southern
Europe (the United Kingdom, the Low
Countries, France, Portugal, Spain, Italy,
the former Yugoslavia, Albania, Greece,
and a small slice of modern Russia
(around the Black Sea) and North Africa
(parts of Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, andLibya). It also includes the area occu-
pied by modern Iraq. The North African
nations are today militantly Muslim, but
the fascinating process now underway is
the Islamization of these same southern
European nations which once were part
of the Roman Empire.
When we collate all the details,
therefore, it appears that Antichrists
world-wide authority rests upon the
foundation of a powerful coalition be-
tween a consortium of southern Euro-
pean nations and an alliance of Muslim
nations on the Mediterranean rim. He
himself is the unifying factor, which ap-
pears to have implications for his iden-
tity. It is not unreasonable to speculatethat Antichrist will be an apostate Mus-
lim (he will show no regard for the gods
[or god] of his fathers, Dan 11:37) who
emerges out of the seven heads Islamic
alliance. He is himself also an eighth
and is one of the seven (Rev 17:11). We
do not know which one. The significant
Muslim population of Europe will per-
suade these nations to participate in
supporting Antichrist. This coalition
between the nations of the former Ro-
man Empire and those of the Middle
East, apparently will not, however, be acomfortable one. Its brittle nature
indicates tension within the alliance,
tension which will erupt later in the
rebellion of the King of the South (Egypt,
Dan 11:40). This tension could very well
concern their relationship with Israel.
In fact, the initial participation of
the European nations may be facilitated
by Antichrists treaty with Israel (Dan
9:27). Their intention is to give pow
and authority to Antichrist (Rev 17:13
probably as facilitating world peace; b
their support is short-lived since aft
his death and resurrection, his proph
sets up an image of him in the temple
Jerusaleman image which speaks
satanic powerand demands that
mankind worship Antichrist. This what both Daniel and our Lord referr
to as the abomination of desolation
The Jews will not worship this idol, an
thus Antichrist initiates the most brut
pogrom ever inflicted on them. When
breaks his covenant, he appears to lo
the support of much of the Europea
contingent of his coalition, and so h
withdraws their authority (they recei
authority as kings with the beast for on
hour, Rev 17:12). From this point o
Antichrist begins to experience unr
and outright rebellion which marks thbeginning of the end of his treacherous
brutal, but short-lived, career.

August has been a quiet month with
many taking their summer vacations;
college students returning to their stud-

Back in March, Joe and Martie Best
contacted the WRBC as they began plan-
ning a move to this area and were inter-

church. Joe Best, a staff sergeant with
the U.S. Army, was being transferred to
Long Island and a communication began
with WRBC. It was at this time WRBC
began to pray for Joe and Martie Best for
a smooth transition from St. Louis, MOto NY and prayers continued throughout
the summer. Now prayers have been
answered and the WRBC has welcomed
Joe and Martie Best into the fellowship
of WRBC.
Within a few days time frame, an
impromptu get together was planned
and successfully put together by Chris
and Jackie Hallstrom in their home on
Sunday, August 16th. The Hallstroms
invited and opened their home to the
entire congregation of the church for atime of fellowshipping and a time to wel-
come Joe and Martie Best into the
church family. Chris Hallstrom kept the
food coming from the grill and Jackie
Hallstrom was the perfect hostess as
their home filled with over two dozen
hungry individuals. Many of the guests
arrived with their specialty dishes offer-

some reflecting other regions of the US.
There was even a bit of entertainment
from the family dog, Shep, loving the
extra attention he received from the
guests. Shep was expert in finding
guests willing to play a game of catch, at
times taking Shep to the edge of the poolto retrieve the ball out of the pool (a bit
out of reach) for a comical Kodak mo-
ment.
August 22nd was the traditional
WRBC Annual Church Picnic in a very
untraditional way. A picnic, you think of
picnic tables, BBQ grills, tents and um-
brellas and the uninvited guests the
ants and flies. For WRBC it is more
about the fellowship and less of the in-
terfering conflicts like the uncertainty of
whether it is going to rain or not. In-
stead, after the morning service, every-one gathered together in the Fellowship
Hall (while it rained outside for the first
time in weeks). A bit of sunshine in the
form of sunflowers in mason jars made
great centerpieces adding to the picnic
theme. Marcelle Ritzmann, Helen
Bryan, Ruth Kerr, and Alice Teufel were
first in line for the heroes and side
dishes, many from the kitchens of church
members.
The church picnic was also a time welcome extended family into the fellow
ship of the church. One family on han
for the occasion was Jim and Jan
Perrys son, Josh, and also their daug
ter, Shawna, with her husband, Charle
and their two children, Jake and Luk
For Jim and Janet, it was a time to sho
off their new infant grandson, Luk
born July 2, 2010. For everyone at t
WRBC, seeing their grandson, Jake, w
a reminder of how Jake has been on th
prayer list since the beginning of 200
The doctors knew before Jake was bothat one of his legs was growing long
than the other. We have continued
pray for Jake as more news of his im
pending surgeries is shared with us. T
first surgery will be in the spring befo
his 3rd birthday. His surgery will be fo
lowed by eight weeks in a fixator,
device that provides rigid immobilizatio
of a fractured bone by means of ro
attached to pins that are placed in
through the bone. Keep him prayer
we approach that date.
We were glad to see Marc
Ritzmann back at her duties as
deaconess. She recently had gall bladd
surgery and has bounced back wi
amazing vitality.
Nora Faustinorio was recogniz
and congratulated on her achievement
becoming a United States Citizen. Sad
it preludes her departure to the Phili
pines as she joins her husband, Past
Noel Faustinorio. It will be a joyous d
for Pastor Noel and Nora, but a sad d
for the WRBC when she will leave som
time in September.
