Fr. Bob’s Briefs Luke 15 can be called the lost chapter. It can be called the lost chapter not because it was lost and later discovered, but because it talks about lost things. In this one chapter, the evangelist collects three of Jesus’ parables on the theme of something that is lost. The first parable is the Parable of the Lost Sheep, the second parable is the Parable of the Lost Coin, and the third parable is the par-able of the Prodigal Son. (The Church gives the option to read the whole chapter of Luke 15 as the long form of the Gospel in the Lectionary, for those who are brave, or for those who do not have another Mass to celebrate after the present Mass). We are very familiar with the Parable of the Lost Sheep and the Parable of the Prodigal Son. The second parable of the woman and lost coin is often skipped over and missed. Since the second Parable of the Lost Coin is often overlooked and neglected, I will focus

and stay with this beautiful parable this week. Jesus says, “Or what woman having ten coins and losing one would not light a lamp and sweep the house, searching carefully until she finds it?” How are we supposed to understand these words of Jesus? It is easy for many of to see that the lost sheep represents us or to identify ourselves with the Prodigal Son, but a coin? How are we represented by a coin, how are we to identify ourselves with a coin? Jesus’ choice to use a coin in His parable to represent us is sim-ple and brilliant. The similari-ty of the coin with us is even more obvious and visible than the other two parables, espe-cially to the people living in the time of Christ. In ancient times, coins were made of precious metals, worth value in exchange: bronze, copper, and gold, and, chiefly, silver. On these coins was stamped the image of the king, ruler. Coinage was con-sidered an important symbol of sovereignty. By this second parable of Jesus, we are taught that we were created in the image and likeness of God. Just as the coin bears the image of the king and is stamped with the likeness of the king, so too, you and I bear the image of God and are stamped the likeness of God in our soul and body. Moreover, Jesus’ Parable of the Lost Coin also explains what happened to us in relation to God. The woman lost the piece of silver, just like man, who was cre-ated after the image of God, was lost and fell away from God when he first chose to sin. Teaching on this passage from the Gospel of Luke, chapter 15, the great Doctor of the Church St. Ambrose writes, “Neither is it without signif-icance that the woman rejoices because of the silver piece that was found. For this is no ordinary piece of silver, upon which is the figure of the Prince. And because of this, the Image of the King is the wealth of the Church. We are pieces of silver; let us jealously cherish our value.” This Sunday, September 11, marks the 15th anniversary of the terrorist attacks in New York and Pennsylva-nia. It is a very sad moment in the history of our country, and as St. Pope John Paul II said, “it was a dark day in the history of humanity, a terrible affront to human dignity.” We pray for all the innocent people who died. We pray for all their family members and friends, who were left behind in sorrow and sadness. We pray for all the first respond-ers who died, who selflessly tried to save the lives of victims. We continue to pray for all first responders who sur-vived, who courageously served in that tragic day. We repeat the words of St. Pope John Paul II, “let us beg the Lord that the spiral of hatred and violence will not prevail. May the Blessed Virgin, Mother of Mercy, fill the hearts of all with wise thoughts and peaceful intentions.” As we remember this sad 15th anniversary, let us all pray the prayer that St. Pope John Paul II prayed during his Wednesday audience on September 12, the day after those tragic events: O Almighty and merciful God, you cannot be understood by one who sows discord, you cannot be accepted by one who loves violence: look upon our painful human condition tried by cruel acts of terror and death, comfort your children and open our hearts to hope, so that our time may again know days of serenity and peace. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Please pray for peace in the world. May our Blessed Mother Mary, Undoer of Knots, help us with her mater-nal care, and St. Joseph pray for us. Vivat Jesus. Live Jesus!

Lucas 15 puede ser conocido como el capítulo perdido. Se le puede llamar el capítulo perdido no porque fue extraviado y encontrado más tarde, sino porque habla de las cosas perdidas. En este capítulo, el evangelista toma tres de las parábolas de Jesús sobre el tema de algo que se ha perdido. La primera parábola es la parábola de la oveja perdida, la segunda parábola es la parábola de la moneda perdida, y por tercero, toma la parábola del hijo pródigo. Es fácil para muchos ver que la oveja perdida nos representa a nosotros o cuando no iden-tificarnos con el Hijo Pródigo, pero… ¿una moneda? ¿Cómo es que estamos representados por una moneda?, ¿Cómo vamos nos identificamos con una moneda? La elección de Jesús de utilizar una moneda en su parábola para representarnos es simple y brillan-te. La similitud de la moneda con nosotros es aún más evidente y visible que las otras dos parábo-las, especialmente a las personas viviendo en los tiempos de Cristo. En la antigüedad, las monedas estaban hechas de metales precio-sas, las cual valían según el valor a cambio: ya sea bronce, cobre y oro, pero, principalmente, de pla-ta. En estas monedas fue estampa-da la imagen del rey gobernante. Acuñación era considerado un importante símbolo de la sobera-nía. Atreves de esta segunda pará-bola de Jesús, se nos enseña que hemos sido creados a imagen y semejanza de Dios. Del mismo modo en que la moneda lleva la imagen del rey y se estampa con la imagen del rey, así también, usted y yo llevamos la imagen de Dios y llevamos estampados la semejanza de Dios en el alma y el cuerpo. Al igual, la parábola de la moneda perdida de Jesús, también nos explica lo que nos pasó en relación con Dios. La mujer perdió la pieza de plata, pues también el hombre, creado a imagen de Dios, se perdió y se alejó de Dios cuando optó por el pecado. En su enseñanza de este pasaje del Evangelio de Lucas, capítulo 15, el gran doctor de la Iglesia, San Ambrosio, escribe:

Tampoco es insignificante que la mujer se alegre porque la pieza de plata es hallada. Ya que esta no es una simple peque-ña pieza de plata, sino una sobre cual está la figura del Príncipe. Y por ende la imagen del rey es la riqueza de la Iglesia. Somos piezas de plata; Apreciemos entonces celosamente nuestro valor”.

Este domingo, 11 de Septiembre, marca el vigésimo quinto aniversario de los ataques terroristas en Nueva York y Pensilvania. Es un momento muy triste para la historia de nuestro país, y como dijo San Juan Pablo II: “Fue un día oscuro para la historia de la humanidad, un terrible enfrentamiento a la dignidad humana.” Oremos por todos los inocentes que perdieron la vida. Pidamos por todos sus familiares y amistades cuyos los sobreviven llenos de tristeza y de dolor. Oremos por los socorristas quienes también per-dieron su vida en su afán de arriesgar su propia vida por salvar la vida de aquellas víctimas del atentado. Y seguimos orando por aquellos socorristas que respondieron al incidente ese día y que sobrevivieron. Recitamos las palabras del Santo Papa Juan Pablo II, “Implorémosle al Señor que aquel espiral de odio y violencia no prevalezca. Que la Santa Virgen, Madre de piedad, llene los corazo-nes de todos con pensamientos sabios e intenciones de paz.” Mientras recordamos este triste 15to aniversario, oremos todos, la ora-ción quel Santo Papa Juan Pablo II oro durante su audiencia semanal el miércoles 12 de septiembre, el día después de los atentados:

O Dios todopoderoso y misericordioso, tu no puedes ser comprendido por uno que siembra discordia, no puedes ser acep-tado por uno que ama la violencia: Mira nuestra pobre condición humana juzgada por actos crueles de terror y muerte, acoge a tus hijos y abre nuestros corazones a la esperanza, para que nuestro tiempo conozca de nuevo días de serenidad y paz, por Cristo nuestro Señor, Amen.

Por favor de orar por la paz del mundo. Que nuestra Santa Madre María, desatadora de nudos, nos ayude con su amor materno y que San José ruegue por nosotros. Vivat Jesus, Viva Jesús.

Rozdział 15 Ewangelii według św. Łukasza można by nazwać „zaginionym rozdziałem”. To dlatego, że mówi o rzeczach utraconych. W tym jednym rozdziale znajdują się aż trzy przypowieści Jezusa, połączone wspólnym tematem czegoś, co zostało utracone: Przypowieść o zaginionej owcy, przypowieść o zagubionej drachmie, oraz przypowieść o Synu Marnotrawnym. Można przeczytać cały rozdział 15 jako dłuższą formę tej Ewangelii (tak jak to podano w lekcjonarzu, oraz jeśli zaraz po tej Mszy nie ma następnej), lub też wybrać którąkolwiek z tych przypowieści do samodzielnego rozważania. Dobrze znamy przypowieść o Synu Marnotrawnym i o zaginionej owcy, jednak przypowieść o drachmie często bywa pomijana. Właśnie na tej mniej znanej, ale pięknej przypowieści się dzisiaj skupimy. Pan powiada: „Albo jeśli jakaś kobieta, mając dziesięć drachm, zgubi jedną drachmę, czyż nie zapala światła, nie

wymiata domu i nie szuka starannie, aż ją znajdzie?” Jak należy to rozumieć? Większość z nas z łatwością utożsamia się z zaginioną owcą lub z synem marnotrawnym, ale co z drachmą? Wybór drachmy, monety, jako motywu przewodniego jest prosty i piękny zarazem. Przedstawienie błądzącego człowieka jako zagubionej drachmy było dla ludzi z czasów Chrystusa nawet bardziej oczywiste, niż nawiązania do owcy i syna z pozostałych przypowieści. W starożytności, monety wytwarzane były z metali szlachetnych, cennych w handlu wymiennym. Monety ozdabiano wizerunkami królów lub cesarzy; uważano je za oznakę władzy. Przypowieść o zagubionej drachmie przypomina nam, iż zostaliśmy stworzeni na obraz i podobieństwo Boga. Tak jak na monecie widnieje wizerunek władcy, tak też i my mamy odciśnięty na duszy i ciele ślad Boga. Ponadto, owa przypowieść ukazuje, jak teraz najczęściej wygląda nasza relacja z Bogiem. Kobieta, która zgubiła monetę symbolizuje człowieka, który wskutek grzechu pogubił się w relacji ze swoim Stwórcą. W swoim komentarzu do tego fragmentu, święty Ambroży stwierdza, że radość kobiety po odnalezieniu przez nią drachmy ma znaczenie. Nie jest bowiem zwyczajną monetą drachma, którą zdobi wizerunek Pana. Dlatego właśnie Oblicze Króla jest największym skarbem Kościoła. Jesteśmy niczym drachmy z tej przypowieści; powinniśmy zazdrośnie strzec własnej wartości. W dniu dzisiejszym, 11 września, przypada piętnasta rocznica zamachów terrorystycznych w Nowym Jorku i Pensylwanii. Jest to tragiczny epizod w historii USA. Święty Jan Paweł II nazwał go: „mrocznym dniem w dziejach ludzkości i straszliwym ciosem wymierzonym w ludzką godność”. Pamiętamy w modlitwie o wszystkich niewinnych ofiarach tamtych wydarzeń. Modlimy się za ich rodziny oraz przyjaciół, pozostawionych w bólu i smutku. Modlimy się też za tych, którzy ponieśli śmierć ruszając na ratunek ludziom tuż po zamachach. Modlimy się za tych, którzy przeżyli pomagając innym w tych pierwszych, chaotycznych godzinach. Powtarzając za Janem Pawłem II: „błagamy Boga o to, aby spirala nienawiści i przemocy nie zwyciężyła. Niechaj Najświętsza Maryja Panna, Matka Miłosierdzia, napełni nasze serca mądrością i pokojowymi intencjami”. Na tę smutną 15 rocznicę, polecam modlitwę Jana Pawła II, którą wypowiedział na środowej Audiencji Generalnej 12 września 2001 roku, dzień po tragedii: „Wszechmogący miłosierny Boże! Nie zrozumie Ciebie ten, kto nawołuje do kłótni. Nie przyjmie Ciebie ten, kto miłuje przemoc. Wejrzyj na nas, okrutnie doświadczonych przez terror i śmierć. Pociesz Swoje Dzieci i otwórz nasze serca na nadzieję, tak, abyśmy w naszych czasach mogli znów zaznać pokoju i szczęśliwości. Przez Chrystusa, Pana Naszego. Amen”. Módlmy się o pokój na świecie. Święta Maryjo Rozwiązująca Węzły, miej nas zawsze w Swej opiece. Święty Józefie, módl się za nami.

The St. Joseph Choristers will sing at the 9:30 a.m. Mass Sunday, Sept. 18. Our seventh graders will join the Choristers, do the readings, and bring up the gifts. Mrs. Ray and Ms. Ryan have been working with our Choristers and are excited to have them singing for you.

Next Sunday is also Catechetical Sunday. We

will recognize our catechists who work with our children in St. Joseph School, and also our Religious Education program. We are fortunate to have such a fine group of adults willing to share the Gospel message with our parish children.

Please join us as we recognize them and the important role they play within our church and parish.

When you come into our school, you will soon

notice a new addition. Our Parent Club purchased a Water Station for the first floor of our school with the hopes of purchasing and installing a second unit. The water station acts as not only a water fountain but will allow our children to fill water bottles. This could eliminate the use of plastic water bottles in our school.

We also wish to thank the Ladies of the

Rosary for their donation to our school. The $2,500.00 is being used to update our office computer and other technology in our school.

As I stated last week, we are still accepting

children in most grades and new families may still apply for the Caritas Scholars for tuition assistance.
