Is That a Fact!Bentonite, a form of clay composed

of very fine silicate crystals, has a wide variety of applications. Some

forms can expand as much as 300% when mixed with water. It is used to

make cat litter and to line artificial ponds.

Write about how layers in sedimentary rock are like the rings in a tree.

How are they different? What information can geologists infer by examining sedimentary layers?

Write your thoughts in your Science Journal.

Write about how layers in sedimentary rock are like the rings in a tree. Sediment is deposited in layers of rock or strata, year after year. Old layers become compacted under new sediment.

Bellringer

What information can geologists infer by examining sedimentary layers?

Many features can tell you about the way sedimentary rock formed. The most important feature of sedimentary rock is stratification, the process in which sedimentary rocks are arranged in layers.

Bellringer

It records the motion of the wind & water waves on lakes, oceans, rivers & sand dunes.

1. Describe the origin of sedimentary rock.

2. Describe the three main categories of sedimentary rock.

3. Describe three types of sedimentary structures.

Objectives

1. Weathering causes rock to physically weather into fragments.

2. Erosion moves this sediment from the source to another place.

3. Forms at or nearthe Earth’s surface.

1. Origin of Sedimentary Rock

1. Clastic: Forms when rock or mineral fragments are cemented together.

2. Chemical: Forms from solutions of dissolved minerals.

3. Organic Limestone: Forms from the remains of plants &animals.

2. Three main categories of sedimentary rock

1. Ripple Marks2. Mud Cracks3. Raindrop Impressions

3. Three types of sedimentary structures
