National Hispanic Herita g e Month National Hispanic Herita g e Month SEPTEMBER 15–OCTOBER 15 Dr. Gina Garcia Professor, School of Education University of Pittsburgh Dr. Gina Garcia will discuss current thinking around the socialization of graduate and undergraduate students of Latinx backgrounds. She will review existing literature of Latinx students’ integration, adjustment, and socialization, and through the lens of Latino Critical Theory (LatCrit), will highlight ways in which Latinxs experience racist socialization contexts along the postsecondary educational pipeline and how this negatively affects their socialization process (and ultimately their success). Karina Chavez Executive Director of the Pittsburgh Council of Higher Education (PCHE) Karina Chavez will discuss the demographics and trends for the Latinx community as a region (Pittsburgh), the city of Pittsburgh, and Latinx student populations within the PCHE institutions and how they measure and compare nationally. She will further discuss what this means to the PCHE institutions given that they are severely behind national trends and what that means as the Latinx group has been identified as the largest growing college eligible population in the US over the next 20 years.
