Catholic education is a unique expression of the Church’s evangelizing mission. Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, sent his disciples to all the nations to share the Good News and promised that they will be guided by the Holy Spirit. We advance the mission of Catholic education in an increasingly diverse Church confident that the same Spirit journeys with us. The logo of the National Summit on Catholic Schools and Hispanic Families embodies this conviction.

Fire is a powerful biblical image of God’s divine presence that gives life, consumes with passion, and transforms all in its way. It evokes the fire in the heart of countless educators, ministers, and supporters in the past who made Catholic education possible in the United States; it enkindles the fire in the hearts of the many others today who remain committed to this noble task.

Catholic education is about caring and building. The blue flame represents the children entrusted to our care. The variety of blue shades reminds us that our children are diverse in many ways, that each of their souls is a window into the grandeur of the human condition that we are called to contemplate.

The larger flames represent the families, educators, ministers, and communities of all backgrounds, called to lovingly embrace the children and young people we educate with their joys and aspirations, woes and anxieties.

The direction of the flames provides a sense of movement into the future as we sail through charted and uncharted waters, thrusted by the winds of unrelenting hope, assured that in the end all will be well because God is with us.

September 19, 2016

Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to Boston College and the first ever National Summit on Catholic Schools and Hispanic Families! What an honor to meet with recognized thought leaders in Catholic education and Hispanic ministry in the United States. During these three days we bring the best of ourselves to look closely at the critical challenges before our Church and society as we examine important findings and implications emerging from the recently-released report Catholic Schools in an Increasingly Hispanic Church. Boston College through the Roche Center for Catholic Education, the Lynch School of Education, and the School of Theology and Ministry are committed to strengthening the Church’s mission in our country while advancing groundbreaking research and research-based initiatives to strengthen Catholic education in our culturally diverse communities today. All participants in this Summit were invited because of their expertise and experience. Everyone brings a wealth of wisdom to contribute to this important conversation: educators, administrators, Hispanic students and families, pastoral leaders, researchers, clergy, vowed religious, donors, national organizations, non-profits, for profits, media and advocates, among others. We all care about Catholic education, and during our time together we will be engaged in critical and collaborative conversations where we all will recognize and attentively listen to one another. Take the time to meet people from different fields, listen to one another, share your thoughts and your vision; pray, hope, and laugh together. One of the major goals of this Summit is to model the kind of conversations that are much needed in Catholic dioceses, parishes, and schools nationwide.

This is a unique time in the history of Catholicism in the United States: nearly 60% of all Catholic children younger than 18 are Hispanic. Without a doubt, the present and the future of our faith communities will depend on how well we educate these children and engage their families. Catholic education made a difference in the lives of millions of U.S. Catholics in the past, continues to be a beacon of hope for millions today, and must be a strong resource in an increasingly Hispanic Church as we look into the future. We pray by the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mother of the Americas, that this Summit yields abundant fruits. Thank you for your thoughtful, impassioned work on behalf of Catholic education, ministry, and Hispanic families.

Sincerely,

Patricia Weitzel-O’Neill, Ph.D., Hosffman Ospino, Ph.D. Executive Director Assistant Professor of Hispanic Ministry Roche Center for Catholic Education School of Theology and Ministry Lynch School of Education Boston College Boston College

The Barbara and Patrick Roche Center for Catholic Education (Roche Center) is named thanks to the generous support of Barbara and the

late Patrick Roche.

The Roche Center strengthens Catholic education through the

promotion of research-based educational innovations and the

generation of research to lead the transformation of Catholic schools to serve with a preferential option for the poor and marginalized.

The Roche Center accomplishes this mission through a strong commitment to research, professional development, advocacy, and

outreach.

Housed within the top-ranked Lynch School of Education at Boston College, the Roche Center brings together a collaborative community

of Catholic school leaders, teachers, researchers, scholars, and innovators to sustain and improve K-12 Catholic education.

Signature programs supported by research initiatives include: the

Two-Way Immersion Network for Catholic Schools (TWIN-CS), a national dual-language immersion initiative; the Emmaus Series, a

leadership advancement program for Catholic school leaders; and Urban Catholic Teacher Corps of Boston College (UCTC), a two-year

volunteer and graduate program where licensed teachers serve full-

time at an urban Boston Catholic school.
