At 1100 p.m, the judging seminar and meeting will begin, Freceeding the seminar we will present a report on what has transpired at the meeting and accept any further comments from the flo or . I would like to keep things short and get business out of the way as quickly and efficiently as possible, so that we can all spend a minimum amount of time in meetings and the majority of time enjoyinb the show,

The judging seminar on Topical Collecting will be conducted by Mary Ann Owens, Jim Maher and Carl Skupski.

Sec you there~

HOLD THE PRESS~

I just received a letter from Carl Skupski, Carl is going into the hospital on September 11th for major surgery and will not be going anywhere for sometime after that and will not be going to Wausau for the Fall meeting and judging seminar. At this point I don't know who the 3rd member of the judging panel will be, It will have to be a surprise when you get to Wausau for the seminar.

I know we will all be thinking of Carl on September 11th and wish him a speedy recovery and a quick return to the Stamp Trails,

OLYMPIC ISSUES

Sometimes I forget to give credit where credit is due, Last month's "Inflation and Olympic Stamps" was picked up frotn Roy Northwood's Central Wisconsin Stamp Club Newsletter,

This month I'm going to steal from Roy again. I had not realized until I read his newsletter that the U.S. Olympic stamps will not have the distinctive interlocked five different colored rings that designate the Olympics and have for years, The reasoning being that U.S. has passed the copyright law on all it's stamps, , , the Olympic fi ve circle insignia is also copyrighted by the Olympic Committee. Therefore, it cannot be used on someone elses copyrighted stamp, This is why you will see "five stars" instead of circles on U,S, Olympic stamps . In Roy's opinion this is "stupid" and I will have to "second" that opinion,

CE~TRAL WISCONSIN STAMP CLUB

The following is a reprint from Central Wisconsin Stamp Club's Newsletter, edited by Roy Northwood, I think it will be of interest to all Wisconsin Collectors, ·

Right in the middle of dog days! Hope your s tamp collection is in air conditioning! Summer doldrums as far as news. The only news item is that Dave Carney had an interesting experience at the Continental auction in Chicago this month. Some advance pag~s from the new stamp catalogs had gotten out and were present. ln compari ng them, many of the prices had quadrupled (four times as much as the '79 prices). This led to quite a lively auction. In fact the theme was "Buy anything, you can't help but make money!" This takes me back to my old theme - where do you start stamp collecting? Read Howard Sherpe' s center sect ion of .July "Across The Fence" newsletter very carefully~ It deals

with the Junior Philatelists of America. They need every bit of help from us senior collectors to get them involved . It is going to get more expensive and involved to pick up those odd items - don't look for any drop in stamp prices - only continued rises as more and more items may become scarce and ha rd to find. I eavesdropped on two dealers sitting behind me on the limo into Chicago and heard their common complaint -NO MATERIAL AVAILABLE!

Dealers seem to be buying from each other (not that they always didn't but now as a matter of survival) to fill customers wants as most of their stocks have gaping holes in them. Sorry to make this sound like a warning of doom but with inflation, gas shortages, fuel oil increases, truckers' strikes, food increases, why should our little old hobby of stamp collecting be neglected. You can only look on the bright side -there is never anything so satisfying and fullfilling as finding that one stamp to fill our that set that you have been looking for so long at a r easonabl e price (or even ·a ridiculous low one for even a better glow). It all seems to make the hobby worthwhile and for a while the sun shines again!
