As a reminder to all families, next Saturday is St. Cecilia’s annual fall Oktoberfest celebration. The event, which runs from 5PM to 11PM, is a great community building opportunity for our community. Dear Parents/Guardians:

Next Tuesday, September 24th Lifetouch will bet at school to take student and

Early Dismissal Reminder

Friday, September 27 Parents are reminded that next Friday is a 1PM early dismissal

day. Teachers have an afternoon religious in-service. Parents are reminded of the following on early dismissal days:

Morning bus transportation is available Morning breakfast is available Lunch will be served

There is no afternoon bus service; parents must make arrangements to have their child picked up promptly at

1PM There is no after school child care; parents who utilize this

service must make alternate plans

What’s coming in the next weeks….

Preschool Religion – Students will continue to be learning about St. Peter Claver and how to show compassion

towards others. Students will also be learning about the Mass and preparing to attend school Mass. Language Arts – Students will be learning their letters Ee and Ff. Students will also continue to

practice identifying their names and continue to learn about rhyming words through nursery rhymes. Math – Students will continue to learn and practice counting using their numbers 1-5. Science – Students will be learning about the weather, especially focusing on the upcoming season of

Fall. Social Studies – Students will be learning about their families, extended family members, and different

types of homes we live in.

Kindergarten Religion – Students will take a test on St. Peter Claver. They will learn about St. Francis of Assisi and

the Blessing of the Animals. They will also learn how names are good. Language Arts – Students will continue to practice reading comprehension while they learn different

nursery rhymes and fables. They will begin to study the five senses. Students will also begin blending sounds together and continue to expand on their pre-writing skills.

Math – Students will build on the basic skills of counting with numbers to 10. They will continue to work with language concepts such as same, not the same, and different.

Science - Students will continue to discuss daily weather and will begin talking about the change in season.

Social Studies – Students will begin to discuss important people within a community. They will also be studying the importance of the Pledge of Allegiance.

Grade 1 Religion – Students will continue to learn about St. Peter Claver. They will also learn about what is

considered holy in the church. Language Arts - Students will practice reading comprehension as they learn about different body

systems. Math – Students will learn to add numbers up to 10. Science – Students continue to investigate properties water. Social Studies - Students will learn how to use cardinal directions when reading a map.

Grade 2 Religion – Students will learn about the life of Christ. Reading - Students will continue to listen to and discuss stories of Early Asian Civilizations. In phonics

and grammar, students will practice using quotation marks, write fictional stories, and practice spelling patterns they have learned so far.

Writing - Students will practice planning, drafting, and editing short fictional stories. Math - Students will continue to practice addition to 1,000 with and without regrouping. Then they will

begin to practice Subtraction to 1,000 with and without regrouping. Science – Students will investigate how air can be measured. Social Studies – Students will continue geography with a study of different types of landforms.

Grade 3 Religion - Students will take a test on St. Peter Claver. They will learn about St. Francis of Assisi and

the Blessing of the Animals. They will also learn about God’s gifts to us. Reading – Students will read the text “The Trial of Cardigan Jones.” Students will practice drawing

conclusions about what they read. Students will take a test on this topic on 9/27. Writing – Students will learn how to use the TEEC method (Topic Sentence, Evidence, Explanation

and Concluding Sentence) to write a paragraph. Math – Students will be learning various strategies for addition up to 10,000. We will continue practicing

estimation. Students will take a test on this topic on 10/4. Science – Students will investigate energy transfer. Social Studies - Students will practice identifying continents and oceans on a map. Students will take a

continents and oceans quiz on 9/27.

Grade 4

Religion – Students will be taking a test on St. Peter Claver and Unit 1. They will also learn how they are called to follow Jesus.

Language Arts – We finished our novel, The Chocolate Touch that taught the students the negative effects of being greedy. Next, we will be starting our writing unit where we will create fractured fairy tales, just like the novel we read.

Math (Wispé) – Students will take a chapter 1 test. Students will begin rounding, estimating, and working with prime/composite numbers to identify common factors and multiples.

Math (Chawner) - Students will be able to estimate multi-digit numbers and list their factors and multiples. Students will be given a quiz over Lesson 2.1 and 2.2.

Science – Students will test over Unit 1 - How Scientists Work. They will then begin a study of forces. Social Studies – Students will be able to describe the first Americans and explain the impact of the

Columbian Exchange. Students will also be able to explain how America gained independence from England.

Art – Students will add colors to a color wheel using both primary and secondary colors.

Grade 5

Religion – Students will take a test on St. Peter Claver. They will learn also about the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation.

Language Arts – Students did an excellent job finishing up their animal research projects and presentations. Ask your child to show you their presentation on Google Slides - you will be proud! In the next two weeks, we will be writing our short stories and beginning the novel Fantastic Mr. Fox by Roald Dahl.

Math (Wispé) – Students will identify patterns in the place value chart to help with computation, specifically multiplication and division.

Math (Selzer) – Students will multiply and divide whole numbers. Science – Students will test over Unit 1 - The Nature of Science. They will describe how forces affect

motion. Social Studies – Students will be able to define culture and its importance. Students will also be able

to read a timeline accurately and create their own timeline. Students will be given a quiz on this material.

Art – Students will add colors to a color wheel using primary, secondary, and intermediate colors.

Grade 6 Religion – Students will take a test on St. Peter Claver. They will learn about St. Francis of Assisi and

the Blessing of the Animals. They will also learn about scripture being God’s saving word. English – Students will study compound subjects, compound predicates, and compound sentences. Reading – Students will be reading short stories from Collections about facing personal fears. Students

will also tackle their first 5 paragraph essay (explanatory essay). Math (Wispé) – Students will take a chapter 1 test. Students will work with negative numbers and

interpret absolute values on number lines. Math (Selzer) – Students will understand integers and interpret absolute value. Science – Students will be studying the properties and formation of Earth’s natural resources. Social Studies – Students will take their Chapter 1 test. Then, we will begin our second chapter about

Ancient Europe. Art – Students will research facts about cave paintings and create some of their own designs.

Grade 7 Religion – Students will be able to describe several important miracles Jesus performed. Students will

also be able to explain the importance of Jesus’ Baptism. A quiz will be given over this material. English – Students will continue a grammar unit on types of sentences. Reading – Students will be reading and analyzing different types of media. Math (Chawner) – Students will be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide positive and negative

integers. Students will be given a quiz on Lesson 2.1 to Lesson 2.3. Math (Selzer) – Students will add, subtract, multiply, and divide integers. Science – Students will continue a unit on Earth’s water. Social Studies – Students will complete a group project on Hammurabi’s code. Then, we will begin our

study of Ancient Egypt. Art – Students will practice the skills for self- portrait drawings by drawing a person sitting at his or her

table group.

Grade 8

Religion – Students will learn about the birth of the Church as told by Luke in the Acts of the Apostles. They will then learn about the parts of the Mass and why we do what we do when we celebrate the Mass.

English – Students will work on sentence structure. Reading – Students will work on figurative language. Math (Poux) – Students will finish studying the rules of exponents and have a test at the end of next

week or the beginning of the following week (on Chapter 1). Math (Selzer) – Students will add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers in scientific notation.

Science – Students will continue a unit on the formation of Earth’s surface.

Social Studies – Students will take their Chapter 2 test on Colonization in North America. Then, we will start our study of the Revolutionary Era.

Art – Students will finish the classroom value drawings and learn then learn about drawing the hallway in one-point perspective.

St. Cecilia Students and Parents,

Registration for boys’ and girls’ basketball grades 3-8, begins on Monday, September 16, 2019 and will run through October 14, 2019. Registration for winter sports is only $35 dollars per student, or $50 for the entire family. Each student athlete will be responsible for purchasing a new jersey set for $50 (which is the athletes to keep). The jersey fee is due no later than October 14.
