WORDS FROM THE PASTOR...

Westi and I feel truly blessed to be welcomed into the Wayside community

of faith and family. I’ll share some about our lives, family, and work. When

Westi and I move into Hamburg, she will tell you the rest of the story, and no

doubt a truer version.

Westi and I met October 10, 1979 at Bronson Methodist Hospital, Kalamazoo,

Michigan. I was a chaplain intern and she was a social worker with a private

agency. After several weeks of telephone tag, we had our first date. Westi

had planned a second outing with friends for later that evening; in case I was

a ―dud.‖ I was on-call and got ―beeped‖ to return for an emergency that took

up the next two days. Eventually we became engaged and were married the

day after my internship. We returned to Princeton Theological Seminary

where I finished up my senior year (1980). Westi worked as a secretary for

American Cyanamid. Her department worked with sales agents in pesticides and seeds. This is what her

St. Charles, MI father, Bob, sold for over 30 years. Suddenly she had a great appreciation for all of the

chemicals and biologics her Dad had been talking about. He wondered why it took so long for her to pay

attention.

Westi’s parents are both deceased. Her brother Butch and his wife Janet live in Seattle, WA. Butch is a

retired Boeing engineer who tested Stealth aircraft material components. After 20 years as a social worker

in schools and agencies, Westi found work in retail as a sales associate for Archivers, a chain of scrapbook

supply stores. She looks forward to working with Maria and other Waysiders starting up a scrap club.

Our daughter Meg married Michael McCusker on August 15, 2009. They will be starting up a day care

center in their Scituate, MA home. Mike works as a bartender and musician. His extended family lives in

the Boston area and they have made us proud grandparents of Myles Clayton and Maxwell James. I have to

say that these are two of the world’s top twenty grandsons.

My parents live in Asheville, NC. Dad (James, Sr.) is a retired executive with Texaco. Mom (Peggy) held a

number of jobs, both paid and volunteer. She has severe Alzheimer’s disease and lives in residential care on

the grounds of the continuing care where Dad lives in his house. Westi and I traditionally visit them around

Thanksgiving.

I have two younger sisters, Mary who is married to Merrill. They have a son Ben who just graduated from

elementary to middle school and they live in Pleasantville, NY. Mary and Merrill are business consultants;

and love the Mets.. My other sister April and her husband Don live in Chicago, IL. April is very religious;

and a devout Cubbies fan who ushers home games. Don is a business consultant, and plays a mean banjo.

Being an ―oil industry brat,‖ I got used to moving every 5-6 years: Tulsa, OK, Houston, TX, Westchester

County, NY, London, England, Drew University and Princeton Theol. Seminary. I had an early sense of

call and by the time I completed my junior year of high school at age 17, I knew God called me to

congregational ministry. I have served congregations in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, and Kentucky.

I have served on presbytery and synod committees and was clergy delegate to General Assembly in 2000.

Westi and I have already purchased our Town of Hamburg beach pass and we look forward to riding our

bikes along the many sidewalks. We both enjoy minor league baseball games. You have already heard about

the scrapbooking. I enjoy the martial arts (aikido) and reading biographies.

Well, that’s all the news that is fit to print. Westi and I look forward to meeting you in the days ahead.

Blessings,

Pastor Jim Brazell

Wayside Choir

On Thursday, September 17th at 7:30 PM, the choir will resume rehearsals.

Sue Gervase, Music Director and the choir members invite everyone who likes

to sing to come and try us out!

All range voices are needed...men, this includes you too! We rehearse

Thursday evenings, sing at the 9 AM service Sunday morning and occasionally

at the 10:30 service as well. We do several special programs throughout the

year. We realize that you have a life and might occasionally miss a rehearsal or

service, but we know that you will return when you can.

If you have any questions, please contact Sue Gervase. Hope to see you on September 17th.

“WE ALL WIN WHEN YOU PUT IT IN THE BIN!”

We have received our first check for $17 from our recycling efforts. It doesn’t sound like a lot, but it is $17

we didn’t have before and best of all, think of all the papers that won’t go to the dump but are being

recycled.

However the big box at the edge of the parking lot wants to be fed all the time. It has a voracious appetite.

It wants all kind of magazines, catalogs, workbooks, paperback books, school papers,

newspaper, junk mail, and hard cover books (with the cover removed). However, no trash,

cardboard, phonebooks glass, plastic or anything from the kitchen or bath please.

Shredded papers should be placed in a plastic bag and tied.

So continue bringing in your papers, tell your friends and neighbors also and thank you for

your caring and giving. Remember! We all win when you put it in the bin!

GRANDPARENT’S DAY

Grandparent’s Day was first declared a national holiday by President Jimmy Carter

in the late 1970’s. He realized the wisdom and the heritage that grandparents bring

to their families.

If you are still fortunate enough to have grandparents in either your or your

children’s lives, be sure to honor them on Sunday, September 13th. Send them

a card, make them dinner, take a minute to talk to them about the many changes that

have happened in their lifetimes, you won’t be sorry you did. They often have a

wealth of stories just waiting to be told.

PLAN AHEAD

Just a heads up to let you know that this year’s CROP WALK will be Sunday,

October 18th in the Village of Hamburg. Additional information will be available in

next month’s Waysider. Circle the date on your calendar now and plan to walk with

Waysiders to support this worthy cause.

WOW STITCHIN’ TIME I & II

We have been stitching away and having a great time. The Tuesday Stitchers (Stitchin’ Time I) will be

meeting on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month from 10:00 AM– 4:00 PM. If you can only make

part of the day, that’s okay. Our September dates are September 8th & September 22nd.

The Monday evening stitchers (Stitchin’ Time II) have changed their dates in September due to the

holiday. They will be meeting Monday, September 14th and Monday, September 28th at 6:30 PM. In

October they will return to meeting on the first and third Mondays.

Bring your own UFO’s (unfinished objects) to work on or check out what the group is currently doing, it

might be something you would like to try.

If you are ready to tackle a different project or more advanced quilting, we will be discussing

possible items to create or do at our next few meetings. All that is needed for these classes

are a sewing machine, basic sewing knowledge, and supplies.

If you have any questions, please call Shirley at 649-0736 or Mary Lou at 627-2038.

Everyone is welcome to come...you don’t have to be an expert sewer, just someone who

wants to sew some, chat some, and have a great time.

TRANSITION

As we enter this transition period between ―called‖ pastors, the following is information intended to help

clarify the process as prescribed by Presbytery and the Book of Order.

Covenant of Closure (with Pastor David Persons)

The Covenant of Closure provides an explanation and clarification of the principles guiding the relation-

ship between the former pastor and the former congregation. (These principles have been established to

safeguard the vitality of the congregation; to facilitate sound transitions; to develop a healthy relationship

with a new pastor.)

The Covenant of Closure maintains such principles and codes of ministerial behavior as:

1. The former pastor shall not be involved in any leadership or advisory role (public or private) in the

former congregation.

2. The former pastor shall not intervene, support or give advice to anyone involved in a congregational

disagreement or dispute.

3. The former pastor shall not officiate in any special events of the former congregation or in the lives of

its members, including weddings, funerals, baptisms, worship leadership, church anniversary activities,

etc. unless expressly invited by the Moderator of the Session.

4. Requests for pastoral services by former congregation members should be refused. If there is a pastor

or interim pastor in the church, that person should be informed of the request.

5. It is not expected that friendships with individuals in the former congregation will be terminated. It is

expected that former pastors will refrain from giving opinions or directions regarding church business

that could undermine the transitions necessary for the church and the development of the relationship be-

tween the congregation and a new pastor (or interim pastor).

When a former pastor plans to visit a congregation, attend worship or a special event, the Moderator of

that Session should always be consulted in advance of the visit.

A Covenant of Closure is to be signed by the departing minister, the Clerk of the Session, and a

representative from the Committee on Ministry agreeing to the above principles. This agreement shall

be noted in the minutes of the Committee on Ministry as well as interpreted to the Session and the

congregation. The agreement shall also be included in the minutes of the congregational meeting when

the pastoral relationship is dissolved.

The Committee on Ministry is the Presbytery’s agent in reminding both the former pastor and the

Session of the former congregation of the principles included in the Covenant of Closure in the event

any transgressions are reported to the Committee on Ministry.

ACCOUNTABILITY OF THE INTERIM PASTOR

( Reverend James E. Brazell ) ―Pastor Jim‖

The Interim Pastor is accountable to the Session through its Personnel Committee and to the

Presbytery through the Committee on Ministry.

EXPECTATIONS OF THE INTERIM PASTOR

1. Interim pastors will hold membership in or will transfer to the Presbytery of Western New York.

2. Interim Pastors will serve as Moderator of Session and Head of Staff.

3. Interim Pastors will provide preaching and worship leadership, and will officiate at weddings,

funerals, and sacraments.

4. Interim Pastors will provide pastoral care for the congregation, including hospital, home and crisis

visitation, and counseling with individuals and families.

5. Interim Pastors will provide programmatic support for the church as approved by the Session.

Interim Pastors will provide leadership concerning change, conflict management, healing, grief work,

reconciliation, thinking towards the future, and other interim specialist skills, including particularly the

five developmental tasks for churches in transition as follows:

Page 11: SEPTEMBER 2009waysidepch.org/documents/waysider/v80n09.pdf · 2010-06-13 · the Boston area and they have made us proud grandparents of Myles Clayton and Maxwell James. I have to

FIVE DEVELOPMENTAL TASKS FOR CHURCHES IN TRANSITION

a. Coming to terms with the church’s history

b. Discovering a new identity

c. Allowing for needed changes in leadership

d. Renewing linkages with the denomination

Committing to new directions in ministry

7. Interim Pastors who have completed the Interim pastor training may participate in The Congregational

Mission Study.

8. Interim Pastors will continue in professional training to develop interim pastoral skills by participation

in Presbytery/Synod/General Assembly sponsored interim support groups, study events, conferences, etc.

9. Interim Pastors will not assist in preparation of the Church Information Form.

10. Interim Pastors will have no direct relationship with the Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC), except to

request adequate reporting to the Session and congregation. This means that Interim Pastors will not give

advice or direction to the PNC.

11. Interim Pastors will not, under any circumstances, become the next installed pastor, co-pastor, associate

pastor, stated supply or on-going minister of the church.

12. Interim Pastors are expected to attend the monthly meetings of interim pastors hosted by the Committee

on Ministry, during which they will give on-going reports of their ministry in the church.

At the end of the time of service to the church, two representatives of COM will conduct a Pastor Transition

Interview with the departing Interim Pastor.

EXPECTATIONS OF THE SESSION

1. The Session will provide spiritual support for the Interim Pastor.

2. The Session will review the work of the Interim Pastor, through its Personnel Committee, every six

months.

3. The Session will ensure that the congregation understands the special training of the Interim Pastor and

does not ignore the importance of their pastoral relationship in the period of transition, whether the Interim

Pastor is part time or full time.

4. The Session will review the Covenant of Agreement with the Interim Pastor for changes and extension

at least 90 days prior to the end of the covenant agreement. The covenant agreement may be extended by

mutual consent among the Interim Pastor, the Session, and the COM.

At the end of the time of service by the departing Interim Pastor, two representatives of COM will conduct

Session Transition Interview with the Session.

LIMIT ON THE DURATION OF INTERIM PASTOR TENURE

When the same Minister of the Word and Sacrament has served two years as Interim Pastor to the same

congregation, the Committee on Ministry will counsel with the Session on the need and advisability

of that Minister serving that congregation for one additional period.

Unless good reason is demonstrated to the contrary, the same Minister of the Word and Sacrament will

not be approved to serve longer than three consecutive twelve-month terms as Interim Pastor in the

same congregation.

WAYSIDE WELCOMES NEW PASTOR

On Sunday, September 6th at the 10:00 AM service Pastor James Brazell will be installed as

the interim pastor at Wayside. All members are invited to attend.

There will be a reception in Room 110 after the service where you will have the opportunity

to meet Pastor Jim and his wife, Westi.

Page 12: SEPTEMBER 2009waysidepch.org/documents/waysider/v80n09.pdf · 2010-06-13 · the Boston area and they have made us proud grandparents of Myles Clayton and Maxwell James. I have to

Dear Wayside Women, Quilters, Sewers, and Prayer Shawl Makers,

Thank you for your thoughtful gift to me as David and I transfer to

another phase in our lives. I look forward to traveling to our retreat with

you and spending time doing what many of us enjoy, quilting, sewing,

knitting and crocheting—well, I don’t know about the knitting. You

have enriched my life by knowing you. I have appreciated your patience

with me as I have worked in various areas of our church community over

the years. Your generosity and willingness to work with me and beside

me have given me many cherished memories.

Another gift you can give to me is to accept your new minister’s wife with the love you have given me.

Have no expectations for her but allow her to find her own way and place among you. She will bring her

own gifts to you that will enrich you all. You will always be in my thoughts and prayers.

With love,

Naomi

Dear Friends of the Wayside community,

I must express my deep appreciation and thanksgiving for all that was done for me,

along with my family, during my last month as pastor. To the wonderful retirement

committee who planned all those wonderful events, to the fantastic staff who assisted

them, and to all the kind people who attended and contributed, I want to offer my

deepest thanks and appreciation. For all the generous financial gifts, tokens of love,

and those wonderful cards, we feel humbled in our sense of thanksgiving. It couldn’t have been a better

conclusion to my tenure at Wayside and my career as a pastor.

Of course, I am now in the ―adjustment period‖ but in time I will have done enough resting and adjusting,

and look for some work in teaching and sharing my ideas about living in love, forgiveness and freedom. I

even have posted a couple blogs this month! Meanwhile, my prayers will continue to be with you during

your own transition period, and I offer my sincere love and welcome to your new pastor, Rev. Jim Brazell

along with his wife Westi. Remember, the best is still to come on this exciting journey toward wholeness

and peace. Carry on in your studies, meditations, and living with forgiveness for all, learning how to let go

all that grieves and holds us back.

Again, deep thanks for you all and all you taught and gave me.

Dave, the former pastor!

DEACON SUNDAY

Last month when the Deacons led the service this was the special prayer they wrote for Pastor Dave upon

his retirement.

For all of us there are beginnings and endings….

And we live and grow through all these changes.

We have all been blessed with a very special rainbow that has touched all of our lives for over

thirty years. We have said good bye to you David with our tears, with our many hugs of love, and our

voices.

But know this...that the rainbow you gave us every day that you were here will never leave our

hearts. Amen

EXTREME MAKEOVER-

PRAYER EDITION

Please LOOK for the poster about

this exciting event later in this

Waysider or on the bulletin boards at

church. It is October 3rd in the morning and can

jump start or at the very least give you some new

ideas on how to pray.

The cost is only $15 which includes your breakfast,

two workshops, resources, and the chance to meet

and network with likeminded folks. The cost is

reduced to $10 if six or more attendees come from

one church. We already have one person, so only

five more to go. How about you?

If you would like to know a little bit more, speak to

Mary Lou Zerby as she is on the WNY Education

Committee.

WAYSIDE BOOK CLUB

Over the summer, we are reading “Little Women” by Louisa May Alcott. This is a

lovely but heart-rending tale about the March family-a family who loses its wealth but gains much

more...love & unity. This story is based on Ms. Alcott’s life.

We will meet to discuss this novel on Monday, September 28th at 7 PM in the library.

“Beyond the River” by Ann Hagedorn was recommended by Pastor Dave for our discussion in October.

It is the true story of the unsung heroes of the underground railroad. It is the story of the time when fierce

passions swept our nation. A time when folks heard rumors of happenings in the night, but saw no evidence

of those happenings in the light of day...when folks risked their lives so others could find freedom

As Americans face an ongoing war and Christians continue to struggle to live their faith in ways that bring

justice to the oppressed, Hagedorn's account of Christian abolitionism is timely reading indeed.

Everyone is welcome to attend. Bring your suggestions of books you would like to discuss and we will put

them on our schedule for the remainder of the year.

We still need helpers to sign up for

CHARACTER

The character virtue for September is "Responsibility,"the opposite of unreliability. As

we begin this next year of Sunday School and all the other activities with our interim

pastor, it's an opportunity to remember to share all of your gifts with Wayside to keep our

faith community strong and growing. Responsibility is knowing and doing what is expected

of us when we were given our gifts of time, talent and treasure. Become involved in a

church group or activity this fall.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

A few weeks ago, tragedy struck when a downpour resulted in flooding in the communities of Gowanda

and Silver Creek. Presbyterian churches as well as numerous homes in both towns were damaged and/or

destroyed. On August 16th, Tabitha Glista asked our members for monetary donations to be donated toward

the cleanup effort. Thank you for your generous donations totaling $120. This will be sent to Presbytery

who will forward the funds to Gowanda for their use.

We will continue to track the cleanup and let you know where additional help both in man hours and money

are needed. If you are able to help that would be appreciated. All assistance is being coordinated through

the Presbytery of WNY.

Hi Everyone,

It is with excitement that I am looking forward to the new Sunday school year and I hope

you are too. The teaching staff is ready and waiting for your children. We have plans

for an exciting year. Our theme this year is: “Helping Hands Working Together—to

serve our family, our church and our world” We are visualizing this as service and

ecology oriented year. GO GREEN! We will keep you posted as to what is planned.

The year will begin on Sunday, October 13th with a Continental breakfast and registration in Room 110.

Please be here by 9:00 am. You will receive a packet by mail for each of your children. If you are new to

our church, forms will be available that morning, just bring your children and sign them up. Sunday school

is for Pre K—Grade 8. Nursery care is provided at the 9AM service for newborn—age 4.

We would love to have a couple or perhaps a parent or two that might be willing to work with our high

school youth on a once or twice a month basis. We are blessed that we have had two wonderful

confirmation classes in the last four years, but sad that we don’t have a program to offer them as they grow

to adulthood. We are wishing for a social/service oriented group that would earn some of their community

service either here or in the community. If you think you might be interested, please contact me at your

convenience.

―We promise to love, encourage, and support you, to share the good news of the gospel with you, and to

help you know and follow Christ.‖ are the vows spoken as our children are baptized. Our teachers who

have taken this message to their hearts are:

Nursery Care: Barb & Joanne Dole

On July 15th Wayside lost a dear friend, George Wilson who passed away

suddenly. At his service, his granddaughter Kelly read a letter that her

Papa George wrote to her about a young friend who passed away. The

letter is a beautiful reminder from George about how precious life is.

Kelly was gracious enough to let us print the letter so everyone can share

in the wisdom and love of her Papa George.

Dear Kelly,

Your dad told me this morning about the death of your young friend. He didn’t know may of the details,

but did know and felt strongly the sadness and grief that you and your friends and certainly, his family are

experiencing now.

I never lost a close friend at your age, Kelly, but over the years I have lost people I’ve loved and many that

I just liked. The hurt is in many ways the same except that were love is involved, even the love of friends,

hurt is deeper, and at the beginning, would appear to be unending. And, for all the words we know, there I

is no combination of them that keeps us from this hurt, nor from this sadness that in may ways can be very

frightening.

What frightens us most, I guess, is not being able to get a satisfying answer to the questions, “why?”. Why

such a young person? Why such a friendly, loving person? Why a person of promise? Why a person who

could have done some good in world that desperately needs “some good”?

When we can’t answer these questions, we’re left with the awful truth that death, somehow, is no respecter of

age, is no respecter of promise, nor of place or importance in the world, no matter how large or how small

at our last moments.

Knowing these things then, death frightens us for ourselves. When will it take me, how will it take me, will I

have accomplished much or anything, will I have been loved, will I be missed, will I have a chance to say

goodbye, a chance to say I love you to my family, to my friends, and , perhaps, will I have a chance to say a

prayer before I leave?

Very few of us ever know when or how death will enter our lives. All of us know, however, that its coming is

inevitable. It’s too morbid to live a life that is itself a preparation for death, but it’s unwise to live a life that

denies its coming.

Last night, Kelly, you asked what you could say to your friends at this terrible time and I sad that though

your tears you might simply say that he was a friend and that you loved him. You might also, when your hurt

allows you to think of the good memories, think about yourself and your life’s inevitable end and work to live

it so you will accomplish something of value, that you will have earned the love of others, that you will be

missed, that each day in the lives of those you love will be somehow a sweet goodbye, that your family will

know how much you cared, and that a prayer was gentle on your lips.

Time will do a lot, Kelly. Being your good self will do the rest.

I love you,

Papa

We will miss you George. Rest in peace. Thank you to the Wilson Family for sharing your husband,

father and Papa with us at Wayside.

STEPHEN MINISTERS

One on one. One to one. One with one.

Together through the hard, cold winters and the soft, warm summers.

Because life has both.

Please give Shirley Vandepoll a hug, hearty hand shake, big wide smile, pat on the back supportive

"congratulations!" Not only has she completed the St. Stephen's Ministry Leadership Training classes;

but she is also taking on the new responsibilities of supervising Waysides' own Stephen Ministers.

Encourage her!

Jesus said, "Behold, I make all things new!‖ Most of us don't really like new things. The comfortably

familiar is much nicer. The 'new' is most often forced upon us by circumstances outside of our control.

Think of the first day of school (kindergarten) with all the screaming, crying and desperate desire for the

way it used to be. And that's just the parents.

We all face a new experience, together here at Wayside, with an interim Pastor and deciding who we are

as a Spiritual community. Here is a song by Daniel Nahmod that I hope will help us to open our hearts,

minds and arms to 'new.'

"Bring it on. Everything new. Everything different. Everything true.

I am ready for my next thing to do. O, I know it's gonna be everything new.

I'm through crying. I'm through waiting. I'm through hoping against all hope.

I'm through longing for something gone; that will never return

I'm through grieving. I'm through dreaming that the life I had is ever coming back.

I've survived many times before. Broken hearts. Slamming doors.

I'll be alright. Yes; I will. Once more.

Just as I did back then...I'm gonna rise again.

I've finally learned....

So, bring it on. Everything new..."

And remember...You are not alone.

The 'New' improved Stephen Ministers with added Shirley power are at your call. We are fortunate at

Wayside to have Stephen Ministers available as a sympathetic listening presence to anyone who desires.

For more information, please call John & Marie Davern at 549-8043 or Nancy Bassett at 648-0581.

QUILT FOR THE LORD

Join us on Wednesday, September 2nd at noon or Wednesday, September 16th at 10 AM.

We are working on replenishing our supply of quilts and hand quilting an antique quilt. If

you know of anyone who could benefit from the comfort of one of our quilts, please contact

the church office.

ROOM REQUEST FORMS It’s that time again when we try and organize for the upcoming months. If your committee or group

used a room for a weekly, monthly meeting this past year, you need to fill out a ROOM REQUEST

FORM. You can stop by the office and pick one up or give Julie a call in the office and she will mail you

one. REMEMBER...if you want your group/meeting to be posted on the calendar you must fill out a

ROOM REQUEST.

the service a luncheon was served to celebrate Pastor Dave’s and Naomi’s retirement from Wayside.

TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME

On Friday evening August 1st approximately 65 Waysiders and friends heading to Dunn Tire

Park for a Bison’s game. What a perfect evening…the weather was fine, the food was tasty, the

drinks were cold, and the fireworks at the end were spectacular! The only bad part was the

Bison’s lost. Thank you to John Davern for arranging this special evening for the Wayside

families.

FOOD CONES

As hot as it has been, you probably aren’t thinking about soups and/or baking, but fall

will be here with the cooler weather when a nice bowl of hot soup or some bread will be

just the thing. With that in mind, the WOW (Women of Wayside) are getting ready to

make their food cones to sell to support their knitting, quilting, and giving programs.

The cone making is a big endeavor and as you know, many hands make light work. If you

might have some time during the day and would like to help out, please leave your name,

phone number and email address if you have one in the office or send the information to

[email protected]. The committee will contact you when the work days are

scheduled.

This is a great way to help out and to get to meet other women in the church. Oh yes, did I say it’s fun as

well!
