Because 7.1 million are lost

without Christ in Georgia,

WE MUST

“The Lord is not slow about His promise, as somecount slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishingfor any to perish but for all to come to repentance.”--II Peter 3:9

What does the word rescue say to you? Do you hearsomeone’s cry for help? Do you hear sirens orimagine blue lights flashing? The word rescue saysthat someone is in trouble and urgently needs help.

What if no one responds? What if an urgent cry forhelp goes unheeded? Without help a desperate personin danger is likely to perish. What do you think aboutwhen you hear that word spoken? Do you see atsunami wave crashing upon a city of frantic peoplewithout any possibility of escape? Do you hear thethunderous roar of the freight train tornado thatviolently shatters everything it touches?

These two words define the circumstances of 7.1million people in Georgia who desperately need to berescued from sin. People who do not trust Jesus willperish. (Luke13:3, 5) People who are perishing needa Savior who is not slow, but eager to rescue.

This year’s State Missions theme emphasizes theurgency of our mission to reach people in Georgiawith the gospel of Jesus Christ. When scripture talksabout God’s rescue work, it means that He deliverspeople, saves them, or sets them free. (Daniel 6:27,

Galatians 1:4, Colossians 1:13, I Thessalonians 1:10)The State Missions theme verse says that God isready, anxious, and eager to rescue. He does not wanteven a single person to perish without Jesus.

The call of God to rescue the perishing is urgentwork. Jesus went about establishing walk-inemergency rooms wherever He went. The gospel ofMark tells us that Jesus “immediately” rescued peoplefrom sickness and sin (Mark 1:12, 21, 29; 5:2). Therewas no time for delay. His ministry to deliver andsave the perishing was always done in the shadow ofthe cross. He always pressed forward, because“…night is coming, when no man can work” (John9:4).

During this year’s State Missions Season of Prayerand Offering, September 11-18, Georgia Baptistsmust more immediately pray, urgently give, andpromptly go because there is little time for delay.Multitudes are perishing. Unless we act with urgency, lostness in Georgia is on pace to increase by 2 millionpeople in the next few years. Like Japan’s recenttsunami wave, lostness will sweep over Georgiaengulfing our whole culture in the depths of unbelief.

Jesus is coming again. His return may be sooner thanlater. How will He find us when He comes? Will webe urgently on mission, or will we be at ease contentwith the status quo?

Let the desperate images of this year’s Rescue thePerishing theme guide your praying, giving, andgoing. See the broken and shattered condition of thosewho are lost and in need of rescue. Hear the sounds ofemergency equipment at work across Georgia rushingpeople in trouble to hospitals or emergency units thatare ready to save them. Find yourself immediatelyresponding to the urgent cries of the lost. Pray harderfor them. Give more so that they may hear andbelieve. Be ready and eager to go as God leads you torescue someone before they perish.

–J. Michael Williams, Vice President forOperations/Assistant Executive Director, GeorgiaBaptist Convention
