First Maine Coon SpecialThe Viking Cat Club held a show at Alcester on September 15th and held the first Breed Best in Show at a UK FIFe show for Maine Coons.

In a nutshell, a breed BIS takes the breed in question out of thenomination process for the Category it normally sits in (in this caseMaine Coons were taken out of the nomination process for categoryII – Semi Longhairs) and they have their own Best In show section.

This not only benefits the Maine Coons but all the other breeds within

the category as they don’t have to compete with the Maine Coonsfor BIS nominations, thereby increasing their chances of a BISaward. A Win Win situation.

This worked magnificently for the VCC and they had a record entryto prove it!

61 Maine Coons entered and 159 cats in total is the best entry at aFelis Britannica Show for a long time so well done to the club and ahuge thank you to all the exhibitors for entering.

The transition from milk to solid food during theweaning period represents a number of challengesfor your kittens, each one significant. Firstly, theymust of course learn a new way of eating – fromsuckling through to licking and lapping, until theyare finally capable of chewing. While the kittens’tiny digestive systems are losing the ability toprocess lactose in milk they are still only justdeveloping their full digestive capacity so they areat risk of little upsets and can struggle to obtain allthe nutrients form the new solid food.

In addition, there are the kittens’ delicate natural defences toconsider, as the protection they receive from their mother via themilk is reducing but they are not yet fully protected byvaccination, so this is a really vulnerable time. And they have tocope with all this without suffering a growth check, as theirmum’s milk is no longer enough to sustain their energy needs sothey must start taking in enough energy from food.

Along with good weaning practices, choosing the right weaningdiet can really help your kittens face each one of thesechallenges with ease, smoothing the transition period andhelping them to go from strength to strength. Babycat 34 andBabycat Instinctive from Royal Canin are perfectly adapted foryour kittens’ needs at this first delicate stage of their nutritionalprogramme, from weaning until 4 months.

The tiny Babycat 34 kibbles are designed to be rehydrated withwater or milk replacer to form a liquid porridge texture that isperfect for the very first introduction of food. As the kittens lapthe food and become accustomed to its smell and taste, thetexture can gradually be made less liquid, encouraging oraldevelopment. Eventually, your kittens will enjoy the soft, highlypalatable kibbles with no liquid added.

Alternatively, the Babycat Instinctive mousse is proving a big hitfor breeders who prefer to wean their kittens on to a wet food. The unique, ultra-soft mousse texture is easy to lap, to facilitatethe transition between liquid and solid food, and can be readilymixed with Babycat 34 kibbles if you wish to introduce dry foodlater on.

In addition to a format designed to help smooth the weaningprocess, both the kibbles and the mousse are formulated toprovide the very best nutrition during this challenging time. Asuperior palatability to help encourage intake and a high contentof quality protein and fats to support the kittens’ high energyneeds, helps to ensure continued healthy growth during the

transition. A highly digestible formula, prebiotic fibres andessential fatty acids help promote digestive health at this delicatetime and a complex of antioxidants helps support thosevulnerable natural defences.

Both diets are also suitable for the nursing queen, allowing youto feed her the same diet as her weaning kittens, improving theprocess further.

Nothing should hold your kittens back, and by choosing nutritionspecially designed for this tricky 1st stage, you can really helpthem overcome the challenges of weaning with ease.

Why not give something back toyour hobby . . . ?Dear Felis Britannica Club Members,

As you know the Executive Committee of Felis Britannica andthe associated Show and Breeding, Health and WelfareCommissions together with the position of Registrar andDisciplinary Officer are all voluntary positions and most if notall members of these groups are employed in full timepositions.

Sometimes, we find our time commitments for work and theClub get into conflict. This has recently happened with bothour Treasurer and Chair of the Show Commission, as a resultTracey Spooner our Treasurer and Josie Hughes our Chair ofthe Show Commission have felt it necessary to resign fromtheir positions.

Caroline Tipper, a member of the Show Commission hascome forward to take on the role of Acting Chair of theShow Commission. Next year but we do not have a DeputyTreasurer and therefore are asking for members to comeforward to volunteer to take on the role of Acting Treasurerand Acting Deputy Treasurer to be seconded onto the ECand then up for election at our next General Assembly inJanuary 2013.

If you would like to be considered for this role, pleaseprovide your Club Secretary with a short biography sothat your club may forward it to The General SecretaryThank you.

Stewarding – Why not give it a try?Have you considered stewarding at one of our shows? It is fun, youget to learn about breeds other than your own, you can givesomething back to your hobby and get rewarded for doing it too

It isn’t that difficult and you will initially work with a moreexperienced steward. You will also get instruction on the day andthe Chief Steward will always be on hand to help you.

You can steward for the whole day (you will be relieved when yourown cat is being judged) or just during best in show.

In both cases you are rewarded with tokens, which can be used forpaying entry fees at future shows.

When you have been stewarding 2 whole days you get one free catentry and 6 times best in show stewarding is also rewarded withone free cat entry.

Contact John tipper or the show manager before theshow if you want to steward for us.
