Call the Midwife

A fascinating portrayal of birth, life, death and a community on the brink of huge social change.

Raised in wealth in the English countryside, she’s spent time in Paris and could have been anything. But she chose to become a nurse, and now, as a newly qualified midwife, Jenny’s come to work with an order of nursing nuns at Nonnatus House — in the poorest area of the city.

Based on the best-selling memoirs of the late Jennifer Worth, Call the Midwife is a moving and intimate story of midwifery and families in London’s East End in the 1950s. Here the streets teem with children — families of six to ten children are com-monplace — and with just one eight-bed maternity ward to serve the whole district, most deliveries take place at home. Few homes have indoor sanitation, and none have hot running water. The six-part drama follows Jenny as she meets her patients for the first time — women like Conchita, who is on her 25th pregnancy, and Mary, a prostitute and pregnant at just 15. At first shocked by the appalling conditions, Jenny soon learns to love and admire her patients and their families as well as the sisters and fellow midwives as they all witness the daily drama of life in this vibrant community.

When Jenny Lee first arrives in London’s East End, she knows nothing about hardship, poverty or, indeed, life itself.

From the delicate melodies of Mozart to the deep tonal layers of Richard Strauss to what is, perhaps, the greatest musical achievement of all, Wagner’s Ring, KQED is your destination for breathtaking opera. Grand costumes, epic stagings, world-class voices and the world’s greatest operas make for an unforgettable fall on television. Join Wotan, Brünnhilde, Salome, Papageno, Desdemona, the Queen of the Night, Suor Angelica, Gianni Schicchi, Siegfried, Iago and Otello in perform-ances from the Metropolitan Opera and the San Francisco Opera.

There’s Something in the Aria

Opera star Frederica von Stade hosts the third season of KQED’s co-productions with San Francisco Opera. The mezzo-soprano spoke to On Q’s editor about her career and her involvement in local youth music education and programs.

What appealed to you about hosting the KQED programs? David’s invitation. [David Gockley is San Francisco Opera’s general director.] I have such a high regard for him. I’d probably do anything he asked me. We go back such a long way, and I’ve seen the magic he’s created in Houston first and here. The high-definition broadcasts open up the magic opera world to so many more people.

Have you seen that singers approach their performances differently if they are being filmed?Well, of course, it helps if you are Anna Netrebko and you’re gorgeous, but I haven’t seen a great difference of technique. I think the challenge is for the producer. Deciding what shots to use. I think the work they do is brilliant. I just love sitting and being

able to have popcorn while watching opera. That just seems so perfect. I’d take popcorn over champagne any day! Is there an opera role that you’d like to sing? You know, I’m often asked that and there’s nothing I covet. I feel I’ve had better than I deserve. I think everyone, especially if you play boys all your life, would like to do the stabbing scene from Tosca just for the fun of it, but no, I feel fortunate. Well, maybe a tenor role! A tenor role would be fun.

Tell me about your involvement in local arts education.About seven or eight years ago, I met this marvelous nun at a charity event who told me she had no music program at her school in West Oakland — St. Martin de Porres. I said, “I’ll come over tomorrow.” Everyone is affected positively by music. No matter what music you listen to. And for kids that have very little and have very complicated lives, it offers them even more.

At St. Martin we have choir and violin. Violin, which was my idea, starts in kindergarten. Maybe that wasn’t such a good idea — it is adorable for the eyes, but torture on the ears. But I have to say, we do have two or three kids who are pretty darn good. And when they hold an instrument as fragile as a violin and when that sound goes in their ear, something happens to them. So I find the teachers and then I go in and help. I pass the violins out and try and discipline the children — although when I’m in charge they are swinging from the chandeliers! I just love it. I wish I had more organizational skills though. What I do is very humble and helter-skelter. But it’s got to be done. You have to go at it with the mindset that something is better than nothing. It doesn’t take as much as people think.

Point Lobos State natural Preserve

Both parts of the California Forever special air back to back on KQED 9, Wednesday, September 12, beginning at 9pm.

David Vassar. He, along with co-producer Sally Kaplan, conceived the idea for the film while watching the battle between conservationists and developers over the proposed Orange County Toll Road, which would have paved over a portion of San Onofre State Beach. Vassar and Kaplan felt compelled to tell the story of California’s state parks as a way to remind viewers of these places and their value. The two-part PBS special and KQED presentation highlights the discov-ery and creation of California’s state parks system and celebrates those whose passion and commitment helped preserve and protect our parks for future generations.

California Forever

California’s memories are captured in its treasured state parks. But who had the foresight to capture these memories in a state parks system? How did California’s state parks evolve into the largest state park system in the country? And how will challenges and obstacles today affect the future of California’s state parks and other protected lands across the country? These questions are answered in the inspiring film California Forever, written and directed by Academy Award nominee

A beautiful, engaging and visually stunning story of California’s state parks.

What inspired you to report on this issue? We’ve heard a lot about the potential urban impacts of a changing climate — heat waves, rising seas and so forth. The threats facing farms and ranches have been underreported, and yet agriculture is a billion-dollar business in California and among the most vulnerable to a quirky climate. Water supplies will be critical, of course, but there will be impacts from higher temperatures and invasive pests, as well. I think few people realize how fragile crops can be when the conditions start changing, and as you know, California is “the nation’s salad bowl.”

Were you surprised by some of the estimates showing the impact of climate change on agriculture? No, not considering the vulnerabilities of the farm sector. You might be referring to the U.C. Davis study projecting a possible billion-dollar-plus impact by 2030 — and

remember, that’s just from one aspect of a changing climate: increased salinity from rising sea levels. But as we’ve discussed, climate change will have — many argue is having — multiple impacts.

Many people don’t think about farms when thinking about climate change. How do you go about conveying the importance of this issue to viewers and listeners in your coverage? Many believe that ultimately, it’s going to show up on your grocery bill. If cherry crops are failing because the springtime nights weren’t cool enough or farmers are having to fallow tomato fields for lack of water, at some point it becomes simple supply and demand and food prices will be affected. Many people still think of climate impacts as something their grandkids will have to contend with, but one longtime grower told us he believes that effects of a changing climate will start systematically hitting U.S. consumers within a decade.

As other news organizations have cut back on in-depth reporting, KQED News has been focused on providing informative, engaging coverage of important issues. This month KQED premieres a new multi-platform co-production with the Center for Investigative Reporting — Heat and Harvest: Impact of Climate Change on California Agriculture. We spoke with Climate Watch senior editor Craig Miller, who hosts the television special.
