Hallelu, Hallelu, Hallelu, Hallelujah Praise ye the Lord!

(The beginning words from a favorite song in Sunday School)

From Peggy, your Chaplain.

To the church of Our Savior’s Lutheran, the people of God the Father and of the Lord Jesus Christ. I pray that God will be kind to us and bless us with peace. I thank God for you and always mention you in my prayers. I pray for God to continue blessing us by the faith and loving work we do

honoring God’s love to us. May our believing in Jesus Christ continue to hold firm.

My dear friends, God loves you and He has chosen you as His people. Our Lord is looking for opportunities to grow our ministry in spreading the Good News. The problem is that we’re often so busy trying to promote our own thoughts and ideas, God can not get a word in edgewise. God has put in our hearts to share the gospel. He wants us to use our gifts and talents to do that. Each of us has been called for a holy and noble purpose. WE are put on earth not to consume the blessings God gave us but to spread them out to all people. You have become an example for all the Lord’s

followers at Our Savior’s and our community.

In 2 Corinthians 12:27 it reads: Together you are the body of Christ. Each one of you is a part of his body. We as the church and as individuals are part of Christ’s body. When part of the body is broken, it does not function as well as when all is working together. So with that, when you do not us the gifts and talents God has given you Christ’s body (the church) does not work to fullness. My dear friends, in the name of Jesus Christ, I ask you to step forward now this fall in helping

wherever the need is.

Our Christian Ed. Team has spent many hours this summer preparing for the start of Sunday school. Now they need your help. If not helping in Sunday School there are many areas in the

church that need you.

Our need is great –

• We need Sunday School teachers, shepherds to help on Sundays during Sunday School.

• We need support for the call committee.

• We need help in all our ministry teams.

• We need help every Sunday morning for our church services before and after the services.

The list of needs is too great to write all of them.

In your heart you can feel the need you are being called too.

Come One, Come All

Be a part of God’s family here at Our Savior’s Church as well as in our community. Our church is

beginning a new journey in its life. God wants you to be a part of it.

WHERE IS GOD CALLING YOU?

I ask each of you personally to step forward this fall and be active in our church community.

WE NEED YOU.

Our Interim, Pastor Rebekah (Becky) Wagner, will be joining us on September 2 for her first service. What a blessing God has granted us to begin this fall. Praise God for all the blessing he has given to us and the glorious journey He is taking us on. Come celebrate on September 2 with worship, singing, praising God, and for the life God has blessed you with. Make this service and

all our services strong with voices, and you’re accepting the call; the call God is calling you to do.

We are the church. You are the church. And you make it what it is. Let’s spread the Word of

God to all. I pray for each of you and your new journey with Christ.

God is calling you -- COME

Church News

Greetings to you, Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

We hope you have enjoyed the beautiful summer the Lord has given to us.

A few items to review and update everyone on:

Pastor Paul Hadland sent us a formal resignation and his last official day was July 10, 2012. Monetary compensation was extended past his medical leave to show our support for his healing and recognition of the time he spent working with our congregation on many different levels. We will give him a Memory Book with Bible

passages, pictures and personal notes that congregational members have supplied the end of August.

We have said goodbye to Pastor John and Marilyn. We thank them for the extraordinary love and support they have given Our Saviors. At the Wednesday Picnic “Outdoor” Service, August 8th Pastor John was given a bag

from Duluth Pack and a quilt to Marilyn and Pastor John to express our appreciation.

Our deadline for Call Committee applications was August 13, 2012. The CAT (Church Advisory Team) and the PPC (Parish Planning Council) will review the applications received to date and make a determination if we have met the guidelines set forth, to select the members of the Committee and hold a special congregational meeting to accept or to reject the selected members for the Call Committee. We would like to thank everyone who applied for this committee. We know this is a major time commitment that you are not just representing yourself but the entire congregation and you understand the importance of being open minded, to respect others and maintain

confidentiality.

Lastly, we were provided with a recommendation from the NE MN Synod for an intentional interim pastor. We (CAT) met with Rev. Rebekah (Becky) Wagner the third week of July and offered her a six (6) month contract for an Interim Pastor with Our Saviors Lutheran Church. We and Pastor Becky will have an option to extend this contract beyond this time if needed. We hope and pray you will welcome her as we did Pastor John. She will be

starting the first of September and working 4/5th time.

We (CAT) are looking forward to fall and seeing everyone at worship. As Pastor John’s last sermon message to us said: And the 7th day was a day of rest. Remember the Sabbath and keep it Holy. Come gather at the Lord’s

House with your congregational family. Rest and rejuvenate with us!

In service to Him,

Church Advisory Team

Dear Church Family,

Thank you so much for the prayers before and following by back surgery June 27. I went into surgery that day with an immense sense of peace, and I know it was due to all the prayers. I sincerely appreciated the cards, phone calls, and visit from Chaplain Peggy who presented me with the most beautiful prayer shawl and a special Holding Cross crafted by Al Behrens. I feel so blessed to be part of the Our Savior’s family.

To the congregation at Our Savior’s,

Your gift to us surprised us as we never thought that you would gift us with such treasures. You were so thoughtful as you gave us just what we needed. A Duluth Pack for my trip to Norway was perfect for me. The quilt for our bed which fits our queen sized soft side water bed just right, was again so thoughtful.

The best treasure of all was the appreciation, kindness, welcome and friendship you gave to us. We came determined not to get close to you. That sure didn’t last. We ended up in a mutual blessing of friendship and love. For a short time we got into each others lives. You have thanked us and we want you to know how much we thank you. To God be the glory.

In blessing, love, and thanks,

we remain your servants in Christ,

John and Marilyn

Coffee with a Lutheran Flavor The LWR Coffee Project is a partnership between

Lutheran World Relief and Equal Exchange.

The LWR Coffee Project unites you with farmers who labor to fill your cup. Buying Fair Trade gives coffee farmers steady income to sent their children to school, make sure their communities have clean water, and protect their environment.

Lutherans and coffee… the two come together when neighbors gather at church for fellowship. Fairly traded coffee shares more of the bounty of the crop with those who grow it. Improved incomes and trustworthy partners enable small farmers to build a better future for their families and communities. The LWR Coffee Project is a way to reach out with what we spend on something as ordinary and won-derful as coffee. It’s Good Coffee for a Good Cause.

Every Sunday we enjoy fair Trade coffee following worship services in the Narthex.

OSL’s Fair Trade Store has many varieties of coffee, tea and chocolates as well as baking cocoa, hot Cocoa, almonds, Olive Oil and Olivewood Carvings. Stop in the office during regular hours or visit us on Sunday’s between worship services

Sept 30 Num 11:4-6, 10-16, 24-29 James 5:13-20 Mark 9:38-50

“You will listen, O Lord, to the prayers of the lowly; you will give them courage. You will hear the cries of the orphans; you will judge in their favor, so that mortal men may cause terror no more.” (Psalm 10:17-18)

Eleven years have passed since that tragic September morning in 2001, when terrorists took thousands of innocent lives and shattered America’s sense of security. As we reflect on this anniversary, Psalm 10 reminds us that God is on the side of the victim, the weak, and the helpless. He won’t ig-nore the cries of people in need, and he ensures that justice is ultimately done.

The church office will be closed Monday, September 3 in observance of Labor Day.

Helping young hearts, minds and bodies explore new horizons with Jesus!

New Horizons Christian School is accepting

registrations for the 2012-13 school year.

Notes from the Director… Notes from the Director… Notes from the Director… Notes from the Director… It is almost a new school year. Soon our little school will be ringing with little voices; playing, laughing, learning & growing. It will feel alive again ~ as it should! Our program plan has been expanded to include more time for science, hands on learning, library time and computer lab. Our teachers have spent months dreaming, planning and preparing. Countless volunteer hours have gone to organizing, building and decorating our little library. It is an exciting time!

We also face challenges. Enrollment is way down. Early last spring, registration was at an all-time high. We anticipated full classes for the 2012-13 school year. But the transition we find our church going through, a tough economy and Kid’s Corner pend-ing move from Washington School to Zion Lutheran Church have all impacted our enrollment.

New Horizons is an extension of the mission and ministry of Our Savior’s. Children graduate from our program armed with a secure knowledge that Jesus loves them and is always by their side. They learn acceptance and how to embrace differences. They also learn to trust the leaders and church family that they encounter during their school day; giving them a sense of belonging within our church community. Our school is a door for young families to find their way into our church family.

This is our preschool; yours and mine. Years ago, you, my church family, had this beautiful facility built. Three years ago you responded to a challenge by fully funding the purchase of our beautiful playground. A group of you worked in the snow to construct the equipment. I have faith that these acts were in response to God’s plan for Our Savior’s. Let’s fill our school to capacity!

As with all times of crisis, transition and change; we are presented with an opportunity to pull together as a community of believers to help one another. I am asking you to help. Please spread the word about our program. Encourage families to call me with questions about our school. Encourage families to ask about payment options if money is a concern. Attend our Rummage Sale this fall. I’m encouraging a carpool program to give children in daycares the opportunity to go to preschool when their parents are at work. I welcome ideas and volunteer help to respond to this growing need. And most importantly, please keep us in your prayers.

And, Thank you from all of us at New Horizons! Thanks for the blessings of time, talents and financial support you have blessed New Horizons with this past year!

God’s Blessings,

PPC Meeting Minutes OSLC Parish Planning Council Meeting Highlights

Tuesday, July 17, 2012

• Treasurer’s Report

A summary of the first two quarters showed a budget shortfall of $10,500 through March. The second quarter offering was $4,664.00 short, but expenses were nearly even with predicted budget figures. Actual income was 91% of budget; expenses were 102% of budget, so after 6 months, we currently have a shortfall of $21,104. For the next quarter, we need to look at areas to cut and the head of each ministry team is asked to review their budget and look at possible cuts. It will also be determined if some expenses could be taken from designated funds rather than the general fund.

• Pastor’s Report

The group discussed the ways in which the congregation could express thanks for Pastor John’s services to us. It was decided to purchase a Duluth Pack travel bag as a gift which could be used for his upcoming trip to Norway. It will be presented on Wednesday, August 8 at the outdoor picnic and worship service. Pastor John’s last service will be on August 12.

• Team Leader Reports

Parish Fellowship Team - The team will serve food and cleanup after the annual summer outdoor worship service and picnic on Wednesday, August 8. Sue Johnson’s Marketplace Catering will be ready to serve at 5:30 and the worship service is at 6:30. The Praise & Worship Team will lead the music and Pastor John will have a short sermon.

Worship, Arts and Music - There has been no recent activity, but the team will work with our incoming interim pastor when that person is on board.

Memorial Fund - The team met on July 16 and reviewed memorial fund giving.

Deacons – Pastor John has been attending weekly meetings and has been a wonderful source of wisdom and biblical knowledge for the group.

Christian Education - Curriculum has been ordered and the rotation Sunday School program will continue this fall. The New Horizons PreSchool is seeking board members. Kristina Remus is Acting Director and Jill Skowland is the only current board member. WELCA - WELCA has endorsed up to $4,000 for the flooring project. A new evening circle is being proposed for this fall. This will be a welcome addition to the women of the church and their service mission.

VI. Old Business:

A. Lot Sale - A purchase agreement for the sale of the church lot was drawn up by Attorney Dave Lingren and the closing set for July 26 or 27. A check for $500 has been received from the buyers and the balance of $21,000 is due at closing. For legal purposes, Lot 2 and the additional 20’ x 60’ strip agreed upon will be considered as one parcel.

B. Call Committee Applications - As of this date, there are no written applications for the Call Committee, but a number of congregation members have expressed interest. Deadline is August 13.

VII. New Business – Interim Pastor

The Synod office has sent the profile of a possible interim pastor for our church. She is Pastor Rebekah (Becky) Wagner whose recent experience includes leading two Duluth churches through the interim process. Church officers, the Chaplain and Youth Director will meet with her on Friday morning July 20 to discuss the position.

• The July minutes are included this month, as there was no Messenger published for the month of August.

• At a special meeting held July 29, the PPC relayed the congregation’s permission for the Bishop to appoint an interim pastor for our church.

• The August PPC meeting is scheduled for August 21, after the printing deadline for the September issue.

Join in the excitement of MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) and explore this year’s theme: “Plunge: Love as if your life depended on it”. MOPS is for all moms with children between birth and kindergarten and offers encouragement, inspiration, and guidance during this hectic, yet critical stage of motherhood.

Meetings are held on the second Thursday of every month from 6-8 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. There is a $39 annual registration fee that includes both local and MOPS International membership. MOPS benefits include monthly meetings, special events, monthly newsletters, bi-monthly MOMSense magazines, weekly mom Emails, MOPS reusable shopping bag, MOPS Iron On Appliqués, and MOPS Stickers featuring VeggieTales. Your first meeting is free and partial scholarships are available. Childcare is available at all meetings.

Our first meeting will be held on Thursday, September 13 and will feature an introduction of this year’s theme, “Plunge: Love as if your life depended on it”, refreshments, creative activities, fellowship and fun. Mark your calendars and join us as we begin another wonderful year!

For more information call 879-6760. MOPS International is on the Web at www. MOPS.org. We can also be found on Facebook.

If you are not a mother with preschool age children, you can still be an important part of this ministry in various ways: 1) Pray for this ministry and the Steering Team members who lead it. 2) Spread the word of MOPS throughout the community. 3) Volunteer a couple of hours of your time once a month, regularly or occasionally, to care for the children while moms attend meetings. 4) Be a mentor to moms. We hope you can join us as either a mom or a volunteer.

This year’s focus theme verse is “Love each other as if your life depended on it”. 1 Peter 4:8-11.
