Downsized upswing

Thank goodness that in a world where parents increasingly have little choice but to allow the electronic screen to babysit even their youngest children, the time-honoured educational toy of the dollhouse with its realistically scaled miniature furniture and tasteful accessories is making a welcome comeback. Rather than randomly and prematurely exposing youngsters to an adult world, those given their own dollhouse to manage can themselves be the controlling spirit in a miniature world of intense imagination. Hours of rearrangement and fanciful enactment permit the child to grow up naturally as he or she endlessly updates a

treasured miniaturised sanctuary right on into youth; with a dining suite in one room, a car curiously in another, maybe a yet more incongruous hippopotamus in a third; a dollhouse’s usage changes as time and interests pass by. In a gendered world, of course, the outside of the dollhouse can be made to look more like a fort than a stately home, but the play, the self-appointed responsibilities and plain amusement are just the same. Although the dollhouse provides a private world for children, a little external if tactfully invisible adult assistance can always be called upon from granddads for crafted renovations, dads for battery-powered electric lighting, and grand-mothers and mums for curtains, pictures

The whole family, of course, can show their true creative talents and generosity at birthday and Christmas time when a seasonal call for new furniture makes gift giving easier and the gifts much more appreciated. Just like the traditional charm bracelet with its several pieces of memorabilia attached, the doll house and its furnishings come to serve as a record of events and outings happily remembered. Perhaps it may develop into a family heirloom. Which brings us to The Dolls Cottage at Gingertown, Yandina. Visitors to the Ginger Factory will undoubtedly be attracted not only to the Cottage’s generous display of all kinds of specially selected dolls but are also certain to be drawn to the miniature furniture and mini-household accessories designed to delight and captivate the imaginative child. Mums tend to get a bit involved too. So, think about what you can do for a special child in your family circle. If necessary, send hubby off into the shed to build the house while you and older children start sorting out the basic furnishings so that a little someone who is special to you can enjoy a harmless and instructive off-screen childhood. The Dolls Cottage is open 7 days a week, 9.00 in the morning to 5.00 in the afternoon. They are waiting for you.

Queensland competition

For the best part of fifty years (my, how time flies) a cooperative dream of art for artists and artists for the community has grown, thrived and regularly made its mark in the Brisbane and wider regional arts and crafts world. Now presenting as Scattered

Arts from premises in what officials describe as the cake and coffee-rich Martha Street Village precinct, this not-for-profit artists’ cooperative continues to not only actively and successfully provide networking and social opportunities for artists and crafters, but also to furnish excellent exhibition space and to conjure much appreciated retail opportunities for its members. A very important part of the cooperative’s mission is to encourage local ingenuity and talent by staging closely fought competitions. Foremost among these is the forthcoming ‘My Queensland’ art competition to which Queenslanders, whether they be painters, photographers, printmakers, jewellers, textile and fibre artists, or crafters in the round, are invited to enter their masterpieces for the certain admiration and possible reward of judges and a discriminating public. There are, of course, particular and necessary rules to be observed relating to the number and size of entries and as into what classes the submitted works will be assigned. Check the website at www.scatteredarts.com.au to ensure that your best effort finds a prominent showing in Brisbane’s premier exhibition. You will need to have your masterpieces through the door by the 17th of October to avoid a solo pavement exhibition; besides, passer-by’s coins sympathetically tossed in the hat will surely fall far short of the prize monies scheduled to be dispersed among the successful competition winners. Of course, while all the excitement of the competition goes on apace, so too does the excellent work of Scattered Arts in the provision to the community at large of many

Adorable adornments Imagination without resources is like a caveman inventing the Jumbo jet: it never takes off. However, if you have a troglodyte’s yen to be creative and a modern’s desire to string along with all things bright and beautiful, the good news is that it's now safe to leave your cave and freely club your way along the Gympie Road, travelling a little north of Brisbane, until you get to Strathpine. There, you will find a bead bazaar without equal in this corner of the southern hemisphere. Just off the busy Buderim thoroughfare and tucked discretely behind that nexus of all things artful - the Buderim Craft Cottage - is to be found a modern (indeed almost brand new) general purpose and exhibition covered space known as the Atrium Gallery. Generally, the general purpose of this

Local Snippets general purpose Atrium, at least on seven days of each week, is to host an astounding display of clever creations from the twelve or more art and craft groups fostered within the Cottage. As a source of unique handcrafted giftware, the Gallery offers to a local and passing tourist trade not just a staggering variety of decorative and useful wares at better than reasonable prices, but also a chance for the curious to see what can be achieved with a little bit of imagination and a lot of practice. If suitably inspired, what better incentive for you to leisurely browse while you ponder what new creative pastime you might in the future be inclined to embrace and, while you’re there, to have a chat and gain some useful tips and inspiration. Also, and as regular as clockwork, every fourth Saturday of each month, the Gallery display is augmented by a busy bustling of members and visitors gathering together to enjoy and to learn from the several art or craft demonstrations staged by experts from across the different groups sponsored by the Cottage. This regular treat is a must-come-and-see event and is bound to prove of interest to all ages and every level of creative ambition. Firing up

Ceramics more or less starts where the potter finishes; that is when the object is fully modelled but is still in need of a bake or two along with a bit of cleaning up, decorating and glazing.
