September 2014 COMING UP Open Houses - Sept. 6th & 7th Lakeville Mill Thrift Shop - Sept. 19th & 20th Adopt-a-Road - Sept. 27th For all our September events see our online calendar at www.oakarbor.org Dear Friends in Oak Arbor, We have asked your pastor, the Rev. Derek Elphick, to become a regional pastor for the Midwest. We received affirmative counsel for this by the Oak Arbor board. This is a vote of confidence in Derek’s ability as a pastor and now mentor to other ministers and congregations in the Midwest. While it will involve several trips each year to provide support in Glenview and Cincinnati, we are able to give Derek some relief so that Oak Arbor should not be adversely affected. This is a step up for Derek, and will expand his usefulness in the General Church. Additionally, Derek will join Advisory – a committee of regional pastors who meet via monthly phone conference with the bishops to provide for pastoral moves, clergy career development, and addressing any challenging personnel issues in the church. Another reason for making the move at this time is that the services of the current regional pastor, the Rev. Erik Buss, are needed elsewhere. The Rev. Lawson Smith, pastor of Kempton, is our regional pastor in the Northeast. But he has lost his full time assistant this year and they are in process of expanding their high school to a full 4 years. Because of this we needed to reduce his responsibilities. We have asked Erik to assume some of them. Please let me know if you have any questions about this. Sincerely, Brian W. Keith Executive Bishop Open House Saturday September 6th, 7:30 PM There will be an open house to visit with Brian and Gretchen Keith on Saturday evening September 6th, at the home of Bob & Karen Heinrichs (382 Oak Arbor Dr.) at 7:30 PM. Happy 60th Wedding Anniversary to Vance and Jean Genzlinger! In August the Vance and Jean Genzlinger family gathered at Lake Wallenpaupack in Pennsylvania to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary. Jean's brother Clifford Stewart and family and Vance's sister Jeryl Swank as well as all 5 children and spouses were there. Of their 13 grandchildren only two weren't able to visit at some point during the week. Ironically, the three houses they stayed in surrounded the property where the Gustave Genzlingers had a cabin when Vance was young! Much fun was had by all as they celebrated this special event.

Honey for Sale Paul and Amy Elder’s bees have been very busy and they are overflowing with honey! They are selling a new honey bear for $4.00 and a refill for $3.00. They make great gifts! To order please call 248-652-2511 or email [email protected].

Happy News! Congratulations to David Steen, (son of Kirk and Mandy Steen) and Rachel Buss, (daughter of Rev. Erik and Ann Buss of Bryn Athyn, PA) who have announced their engagement. A June 14th, 2015 wedding is being planned in Bryn Athyn. Sunday School Begins for the Year

What a great start this week! Seeing the bright faces of students arriving every September brings our goals into focus - working with each individual child to feed their mind, touch their heart, and prepare for life. This year our school theme is “The Importance of the Word”. Over the next nine months, we plan to provide a rich array of learning experiences that will give each child the springboard they need to grow physically, academically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually. As we do so, we will be ever mindful of the fact that the Lord is leading each child. In His Providence, the children are enrolled here and we will do our best to work with Him to nurture and support the students. It is a blessing for us to be entrusted with each child here. Thank you! What’s Going on at Oak Arbor School? Like Oak Arbor School on Facebook, and you’ll see regular updates and photos of school activities. You can also follow us on Twitter! The Nutshell News is sent out to parents and friends by email every Monday. To join the distribution list, send a message to the office. Hollywood Markets “Apples for the Students” This program began again on Sept. 1st and will run until the end of next February.
