We’re using the power of media to spark children’s curiosity
The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) and PBS has announced awards to 21 public television stations, including Prairie Public, for the expansion of school readiness projects.
Prairie Public will focus efforts on young children and their parents, teachers, and caregivers living in the five-county Northeast Education Services Cooperative region of North Dakota. The project will provide training in the integration of Ready To Learn resources in classroom lesson planning and in everyday activities—engaging children with familiar content that reinforces the learning experience from school to after school and during summer break.

“Manitoba Opera tells stories through song that help us to better understand ourselves,
our world, and to celebrate the human experience just as programs like Masterpiece and Downton Abbey also explore the human
condition. Manitoba Opera is proud to support these programs. By doing so we’re
able to give something back to our supporters and Prairie Public viewers in general, and at the same time, provide timely information
on our productions.”

September Television Highlights
Six new documentaries in the Makers project feature groundbreaking American women in different spheres of influence: war, comedy, space (Peggy Whitson is pictured),
business, Hollywood, and politics. Each program profiles prominent women who have transformed the landscape of their chosen vocations. New! Tuesdays at 8 pm CT beginning September 30
You have front row seats for this iconic musical thriller! Live from Lincoln Center 40th Anniversary Season’s Sweeney Todd: The
Demon Barber of Fleet Street in Concert with the New York Philharmonic tells the story of the eponymous barber (Bryn Terfel) who, with his romantically inclined landlady, Mrs. Lovett the piemaker (Emma Thompson), seeks vengeance on what he considers a merciless world. New! Friday, September 26, 8:30 pm CT
The Roosevelts: An Intimate History
Ken Burns’ new seven-part documentary weaves the stories of Theodore, Franklin, and Eleanor Roosevelt, three members of one of the most prominent and influential families in American politics.
The 14-hour series follows the family’s story for more than a century, from Theodore’s birth in 1858 to Eleanor’s death in 1962. The series encompasses all the history the Roosevelts helped to make—the creation of National Parks and the digging of the Panama Canal, the New Deal and the defeat of Hitler, and the postwar struggles for civil rights at home and human rights around the world in which Eleanor Roosevelt played a central role.
Tune in beginning Sunday, September 14, at 8 pm CT

September Television Highlights
Many Prairie Public local television productions are funded in part by the following:
Minnesota Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund with money from the voters on November 4, 2008, North Dakota
Council on the Arts, North Dakota Humanities Council, and by the members of Prairie Public. Thank you!
For the first time on film, His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales reveals an extraordinary treasure trove of rarely seen art created by members
of the royal family, past and present—exploring a colorful palette of family memory and observation. The Royal Paintbox was filmed in the spectacular landscapes of Balmoral, Highgrove, Windsor Castle, Frogmore, and Osborne House. New! Friday, September 12, 9:30 pm CT
Diseases that were largely eradicated in the United States a
generation ago are returning. The new NOVA special Vaccines–Calling the Shots explores the history and science behind vaccinations, tracks outbreaks, and sheds light on the risks of opting out, and it features scientists, pediatricians, psychologists, anthropologists, and parents weighing in on the issues. New! Wednesday, September 17, 7 pm CT
In September, Frontline goes inside one of the world’s most isolated countries in Secret State of North Korea. Using undercover footage smuggled from inside the country, and dramatic stories from recent defectors, the film offers a rare glimpse of how some North Koreans are defying authority in a country where just being caught with illegal DVDs could mean immediate imprisonment. New! Tuesday, September 2, 9 pm CT
Witness the intimate, emotional, and sometimes amusing behavior of nature’s most devoted parents in the new three-part series Penguins: Spy in the Huddle,
A Nature Special Presentation. Episodes titled The Journey, First Steps, and Growing Up were all filmed with Nature’s ingenious ‘spy-cams.’ New! Wednesdays at 7 pm CT beginning September 24
Acclaimed British actress Julia McKenzie returns as spinster sleuth Miss Marple in three new episodes of the popular Agatha Christie series. Miss Marple and a
curmudgeonly tycoon unravel a web of deceit and “dark magic” in A Caribbean Mystery; Miss Marple searches for truth with an eccentric botanist in Greenshaw’s Folly; and she dodges danger while solving the mystery of cursed land in Endless Night. New! Sundays, September 21 and 28, beginning at 8 pm CT
In the summer of 1910, a wildfire devoured more than three million acres across the Northern Rockies. The catastrophe would define the fledgling U.S. Forest Service and the nation’s fire policy. American’s Experience’s The Big Burn, inspired by the best-selling book by Timothy Egan, is a tale of heroism and sacrifice, and, ultimately, humility in the face of nature’s frightening power. New! Tuesday, September 9, 8 pm CT

On September 1, 1981, news director Dave Thompson turned on his microphone and delivered KCND-FM’s first radio broadcast. Since then, Prairie Public’s distinctive radio service has spread to cover every corner of the state and is widely recognized for excellence. But our greatest reward is the knowledge that we are a trusted partner in the everyday lives of thousands of our listeners.
Award-winning news coverage and superior entertainment programs—combined with a sincere interest for regional concerns—have built for North Dakota a quality radio service that’s truly a “public” accomplishment.
Stay tuned for more bits of history throughout this year as we celebrate 50 years of public media that entertains, but also educates, informs, and inspires.
Radio news director Dave Thompson, station manager Edi Kjos, and general manager Dennis Falk, along with staff
and their families, toast KCND’s inaugural broadcast on September 1, 1981.
