THE MESSENGERof Quaker Gap Baptist Church - King, NC
A WORD FROM PASTOR JACK…
LET’S TEAR DOWN SOME IDOLS
The Gospel of Matthew records the sad story of a young man who walked away from Jesus. He came to Jesus with a question, “What must I do to have eternal life?” Jesus told him to obey thecommandments. The young man smiled, thinking he had this one in the bag. “I’ve kept all of them,Jesus. What else do I need?” Maybe he expected a pat on the back or some sort of affirmation atthat point. Instead, Jesus showed him the error of his ways. “If you want to be perfect,” Jesus said,“go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” The young man walked away from Jesus with his head hung down. He had so muchwealth he wasn’t willing to part with it to follow Jesus.
Every day we are forced to make decisions. Some of them are simple, good vs. evil decisions. Some of them are more complicated decisions between two goods. Whenever we make a decision,we reveal something about our priorities. The wealthy young man was confronted with a decisionbetween his wealth and his spiritual life. His choice revealed the condition of his heart. He wasmore interested in enjoying the things of this life than he was in investing toward eternal life. Hechose money over the Messiah.
Whenever we reject Jesus in favor of something else, we reveal our true priorities. Anythingwe allow to rise in significance above our relationship with the living God becomes an idol. The
Lord makes clear how He feels about idolatry. Take Paul’swords to the Colossians as one case in point, “Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexualimmorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which isidolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is com-ing.” (Col. 3:5-6 NIV)
One important practice of the Christian life is to con-
tinuously be on the lookout for personal idols. During the
months of September and October, I want to give you the
opportunity to identify and tear down those idols. Join us
on Sunday mornings beginning September 11th for our ser-
mon series, “other gods.”

We will use Bible study, video clips, and conversationaround the tables to stimulate our thinking, as well as coffee and snacksto stimulate our taste buds. Darshan’s Soul Notes…
Eyes Reset to See It and Rejoice!
I return today from a time at the coast with our family and my spiritual sight has been reset. Myheart is overflowing in Thanksgiving to the God we serve! As I stop to give thanks this morning, my handsflip to the pages of Psalm 107. The psalmist cries out, "Oh, that men would give thanks to the LORD for Hisgoodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men! For He satisfies the longing soul, and fillsthe hungry soul with goodness." (Psalm 107: 8) As we all begin to return from our times of rest away fromour normal routines, I wonder if we might return with a fresh look at our LORD? Could we come backhome with souls that are hungry for a deeper relationship with our Creator and a longing for the goodnessof God? If we could, I have no doubt that we would break out in praise and thanksgiving for His works inour lives. I fear that all too often we live day to day missing the goodness of God that is all around us.
In Psalm 107, the psalmist encourages the redeemed of the LORD to speak up for the mighty worksof God in our lives. How I want to stop and give Him glory for saving me, for "redeeming me from thehand of the enemy." (v. 2) In the times of my distress, He is there "leading me forth in the right way." (v. 7)He has "taken the chains of my sin and broken them into pieces." (v. 14) Most of all I want to sing His prais-es for His Word. "He sent His Word and healed them, and delivered them from the destruction." (v. 20) Hecalms the storms of our lives and guides us to our desired haven. (ref. v. 29-30) And yet, through the ages, itseems we can be lulled into a passive acceptanceof a God Who does not receive the glory that isdue Him for the active part He has in our livesevery day. "Oh, that men would give thanks tothe LORD for His goodness, and for the wonder-ful works to the children of men!" May we "exaltHim in the assembly of the people and praiseHim in the company of the elders." (v. 32) Wedesperately need to open our eyes to Who God isand what He is doing in our own lives and thelives of His people around us. "The righteous seeit and rejoice...Whoever is wise will observe thesethings, and they will understand the lovingkind-ness of the LORD." (v. 42-43) May we all returnwith our spiritual eyes reset to see it and rejoice!
Singing His Praises,
Darshan

As school starts again, and I reflect on thesummer, I am reminded of both the wonderful mis-sions trips that we were able to be a part of this pastsummer. I can think of the wonderful things thatGod did on both of the summer trips, and the waythat our young people felt the presence of the HolySpirit. I also remember how excited and pumpedour young people were when we got back homeabout their summer mission trips and even their re-lationships with God.
As the schoolyear starts, I want toencourage our youngpeople to rememberthis past summer andwhat all God did andsaid…. Get excitedabout your spiritual
walk, God’s calling on your life, and sharing yourfaith with your friends at school…. after all….
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of theSon and of the Holy Spirit,...”
