First United Methodist Church of Hot Springs is a great church and it is an even greater privilege to serve in your midst. When I first came to you this summer, I made the decision to shift The Connexion, our church’s contemporary worship service from 10:45 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. I felt it was crucial for me to preach at all three worship services each Sunday in order for us to get to know each other. I also committed to a Listening Tour – a series of events that allowed me to hear from you about your hopes and dreams, concerns and commitments. Over these first eight weeks, the subject that has come up more than any other is whether The Connexion should stay at the 9:30 a.m. time slot directly opposite Sunday School or move back to 10:45 a.m., along side the traditional service in the sanctuary. There have been strong opinions on both sides of this issue. What has come across every time is the love you have for this church and your desire for it to grow. There just has been no consensus on what would be best. We decided to conduct a survey of the congregation. The response has been impressive. I want to personally thank each of you that took the time to complete and return the questionnaire. We listened, we asked questions, and we prayed. After all is said and done, the decision is to return The Connexion to the 10:45 a.m. time slot alongside the Traditional service. Let me share some reasons why. First, I am convinced it is vital that the church engage in the process of ‘making disciples that make disciples’. Just as worship is important to our spiritual health, growing in our knowledge and love of God is fundamental to discipleship. This means study, fellowship, and accountability must be at the Church’s foundation. Therefore, we have chosen to emphasize small group opportunities like Sunday School, Bible studies, accountability groups, as well as training and fellowship events. Over the next nine months we will be encouraging each of you to get involved in a discipleship opportunity. A second reason flows from the first: our commitment to children and youth ministries. We are convinced that the number of children and youth involved in Sunday School is directly effected by whether The Connexion is at 9:30 a.m. or at 10:45 a.m. While we can offer additional educational opportunities at times and on days other than 9:30 a.m. on Sunday morning, for many, that time slot remains the most viable choice for Christian education. Ultimately ‘making disciples that make disciples’ took precedence. That is also a motivating factor for offering Christian education opportunities for all ages on Wednesday evenings. September 2016A Note From the PastorGreetings my brothers and sisters:

First, let me say that it has been a blessing serving as your Senior Pastor these past eight weeks.

Bereavement Committee RecipesOur Bereavement Committee appreciates all those who help and cherish the faithfulness our church members have shown to our church and to the families of our congregation. They will be publishing recipes that members have prepared for the family meals and receptions each month.

Bridget Kinchloe’s Key Lime Mousse CakeBridget makes this cake for a bereavement noon meal. This favorite dessert makes 14 to 16 servings.Crust:2 cups crushed graham crackers¼ cup sugar½ cup sugar

½ cup (1 stick) butter, melted. Variation: can be used as a spread

Filling:6 Tb. fresh key lime juice (use bottled if fresh limes are unavailable)1 ¼ ounce package (1 envelope) unflavored gelatin2 ½ cups heavy whipping cream, divided10 (1 ounce) squares white chocolate, chopped, plus 1 to 1 ½ ounces, grated or shaved into curls.3 ( 8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened1 cup sugar1 ½ Tb. lime zest

For the crust, mix together cracker crumbs, sugar, and butter. Press into the bottom of a 10 inch spring form pan and 1 inch up the sides. Set aside.

For the filling, squeeze or pour lime juice into a bowl and sprinkle gelatin in to soften. Bring ½ cup heavy cream to a simmer in a saucepan, remove from heat and add 10 ounces white chocolate, stirring until smooth. Stir in gelatin and lime juice and allow to cool. Using an electric mixer, blend together cream cheese, sugar and lime zest. Slowly beat cooled white chocolate mixture into cream cheese mixture. Using clean dry beaters, beat remaining 2 cups heavy cream until it forms soft peaks. Fold into white chocolate mixture; then pour into pie crust and freeze overnight. Remove from freezer and run a sharp knife around inside of springform pan to help loosen cake. Release springform ring from pan, move cake to a serving plate, and grate or curl the 1 to 1½ ounces white chocolate over cake. Cut into wedges with a knife that has been dipped into hot water.

Wednesday Night Family Dinner Begins

(cont. from first page) Please know that when I am present, I will be preaching the 8:15 a.m. traditional service in the sanctuary every Sunday. As for the 10:45 a.m. time slot, I will divide my time equally between the two worship services. Each is vital to growing God’s Kingdom and ensuring the overall success of our church. Therefore, I will give each equal attention. I know that all of you who actively encouraged us to move The Connexion back to the 10:45 a.m. time slot will appreciate and support this commitment.

I invite you to join me in praying that in all we do, God will be glorified.

Our NeighborsThe Word became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighborhood. We saw the glory with our own eyes,

the one-of-a-kind glory, like Father, like Son; Generous inside and out, true from start to finish. John 1:14Our community and world have become fragmented and segregated This is a very different picture than the above passage from John, where Jesus came to this world to be with us – to move into the neighborhood. As the church we are called to be the hands and feet of Jesus and therefore be a neighbor and break down the stereotypes and walls that the world puts up. A couple of weeks ago we came together with our neighbors to support our community law-enforcement officials and to pray for reconciliation. To further that work, we are partnering with our Wesleyan brothers and sisters at Visitor’s Chapel AME and Haven UMC. We would like to encourage committed members of our church to worship not only here on Sundays, but also with Visitors Chapel (319 Church Street) on the second Sunday of September – November, 11:00 a.m., and Haven UMC (107 Burroughs) the third Sunday of September – November, 11:00 a.m. We will invite them to join us on our Family Life Event on August 28th (Church Picnic) and October 30th (Fall Festival). Please prayerfully consider extending your time to worship and be an active participant in getting to more fully know our neighbors. For more information, contact Teresa Holt, 501-623-6668, ext. 116.

Perhaps you are feeling overwhelmed by certain difficulties. This class will help reassure you that you are not alone, that God is with you throughout.

Entrusted, A Study of 2 Timothy: Thursdays, October 13 – November 17, CLC 207, 9:30 am. Marlene Bush, facilitator. We were never meant to take this journey of faith alone or in secret. Underground Youth

The Confirmation Class is off to a fantastic start! Sunday August 14th we had 42 parents and students attend the Confirmation parent meeting and kick off to talk about the amazing ways that we are going to strengthen our faith and learn what it is to be a Christian and a United Methodist.

Sharing about the field trips we will take this year to other Christian and Jewish churches and temples as well as learning about retreat opportunities for rising 6th graders was fun informative. Kids and parents alike enjoyed visiting with old friends and meeting new ones as we became excited about the Wednesday night family meals and activities for both parents and students.

A new adult Confirmation Class will be offered on Wednesdays while the confirmation class meets in the underground for amazing activities to experience worship, mission, bible study and fellowship.

Confirmation Kick Off

Save the Date – On October 22 the CDC will have its annual Flapjack Breakfast Fundraiser. This year the Breakfast will be held in Cupp Hall (not at Applebee’s) from 7:00 – 10:00 a.m. Proceeds from the fundraiser will be used to purchase wall decorations for the children’s classrooms after they have been painted.
