Greetings everyone, I hope everyones school year has gotten off to a great start. Basketball season is just around the corner with just over a month to prepare for that first day of practice. Im sure all of you are anxious to see what the season will bring. I just returned from Springfield, Massachusettsthe birthplace of basketball. I was fortunate to attend the 2016 Basketball Hall of Fame In- duction Ceremony. I consider this to have been a once-in-a-lifetime event. Being around so many greats of the game really put things into per- spective for me. We have been given the opportunity to coach the greatest game of all time. There were a couple of things I heard that really stuck out. First, Isaiah Thomas said he doesnt know of any player who said they were going to be future Hall of Famers. He stated that most just had visions of being a good player and winning championships. I don t think this is much different for our young kidsthey hope to be good, to win a championship, and to hopefully continue to play beyond high school. Second, and what rang true to me, were the words of Tom Izzo at the end of his acceptance speech. He said, Basketball has taught me, and teaches us all, so many important lessons that we carry on into all aspects of life. Basketball is the ultimate team game, where we learn the value of teamworka group of individuals focused on a common goal. I say a player -coached team is always better than a coach-coached team, mean- ing that when the players have the ultimate buy-in, then its possible to win championships. Basketball can be humbling. It s taught me to laugh, to celebrate in victorybut, its also taught me to cry and to handle defeat with class. It s taught me how to handle adversity and how to get up after getting knocked down. These are the ideals that we all should strive to teach our young students. Please, try to remember the role TABC plays in supporting all basketball coaches. Also, continue to encourage others to join TABC, if they have not already done so. God bless each of you in all facets of your life. Sincerely, Herb More TABC President TABC membership cards have been ordered and will be mailed as soon as they arrive at the TABC office. When you receive yours, be sure to print your name on the card. To be admitted to most high school games be prepared to show your card and a picture ID. For college games call ahead to be put on the pass gate list. If you scout a game as a staff, make sure each assistant brings their card as one card won't admit a group of coaches. The TABC Board of Directors met at 9:00am in Austin on Saturday, September 10th. The board approved the 2016-2017 TABC budget and editorial changes to the by-laws. Board members were briefed by Charles Breithaupt and Susan Elza from the UIL staff.

Sam Tipton from the TGCA also updated the board on legislative issues. The Board also received updates from our camp representative Kenny Mann and our social media liaison Josue Flores. The TABC Board of Directors approved the addition of

awards for College Assistant Coaches of the Year and for college level academic all-state. The cost will be minimal when compared to the potential increase in membership in encourages. It was announced that TABC and the Michigan coaches association are in a

virtual dead heat for the largest state basketball organizations in the United States. TABC appreciates the time and efforts given by each member of the Board of Directors as they work to ensure our organization is the best of its kind in the nation.

TABC was represented at the NHSBCA meetings in Kansas City on July 12, 13 and 14 by TABC executive director Rick Sherley. This organization was started 11 years ago with 6 states attending. The NHSBCA now has over 32 member states and 25 sent a representative to Kansas City. The purpose is to share ideas and work together to improve high school basketball. Each year we institute new policies and awards that we pick up from the other states. At the 2016 TABC clinic, we received many compliments on the clinic notebooks, which many attendees wanted to buy ex-tras and give to their staff. As a result we ran out of them but will order more extras next year. This year we are adding two new awards that other states were already giving: College assistant coaches of the year and College academic all-state. We are closing the gap on Michigan in the membership department. After the dust settled on the 2015-16 season the top six largest state associations were: Michigan (5100), Texas (5099), Ohio (3788), Wisconsin (3200), Iowa (3141) and Indiana (2067). All others are under two thousand members. Next year the national meeting will be in Indianapolis.

One of the goals of TABC is to increase involvement with Texas middle school and junior high coaches. For the past five years we have held a middle school session on Saturday morn-ing at the TABC clinic in San Antonio and plan to do one at next year’s clinic as well. Please encourage your junior high coaches to attend that session. Many current and retired coach-es would love to come and share with your middle school coaches. Please contact the TABC office if you need help in finding speakers for a middle school clinic that you would like to host. TABC also presents awards for Middle School Coaches of the Year at the clinic in May. Over 40 boys and girls middle school and junior high coaches are recognized each year. Please nominate your top middle school coaches for this honor and make sure they have joined TABC so they are eligible to receive their award. If you have an article (offense, defense, philosophy, motiva-

tion, out of bounds play, etc.) that you would like to share with

our middle school coaches, please send it to the TABC office

so we may include it in our Middle School Corner. Also,

TABC would love to hear from any middle school or junior

high program or team who has done something newsworthy.

1-20 NEW: Non-playing personnel, e.g., spirit participants, me-dia, shall remain outside of the playing area during a 30-second or less time-out during the game. Non-playing personnel shall stand outside the free throw lane lines extended toward the side-lines throughout the game. 2-12-5: Sound a warning signal to begin the 15 seconds (maximum) permitted for replacing a disqualified or injured play-er, or for a player directed to leave the game. 3-5-6: Undershirts shall be a single solid color similar to the torso of the jersey and shall be hemmed and not have frayed or ragged edges. If the undershirt has sleeves, they shall be the same length. See 3-6 for logo requirements. 3-5-7: Removed the compression shorts rule; add compression shorts to Rule 3-5-3 which means compression shorts now must meet the guidelines outlined in this rule. 9-1-3h NEW: Players occupying marked free-throw lane line spaces may not enter the free-throw semicircle until the ball touches the ring or until the free throw ends.

TABC would again like to encourage our members to send us any news on activities in which your teams par-ticipate involving raising funds in the fight against cancer and other diseases. We have called our coordinated effort Hoops for Hope – Texas Style in order to include the many causes for which you raise money. Many schools have hosted fundraisers to provide assistance for, or in honor of, local teachers, coaches, students or residents. Some have mirrored the NCAA Coaches vs. Cancer efforts where both opposing coaches wear bas-ketball shoes during their game. Others have hosted “Pink Out” events which have raised funds for “The Cure.” Please send TABC news and pictures you have from your events during the season. They serve to give you and your team recognition for your efforts and also to give others ideas on how they might be able to help as well. Keep up the good work and let us hear about it.

TABC President Attends Hall of Fame Ceremony

As many of you are probably aware, current TABC President,

Herb More, was the assistant coach for the 1989 3A State Champion Cole Cougars, which featured a young man by the

name of Shaquille O’Neal. Herb had the opportunity to attend the Hall of Fame Induction festivities as a guest of Shaquille on

September 8-10 in Springfield, Massachusetts. He said this was a fantastic opportunity where he had the chance to mingle with former NBA Commissioner David Stern and coaches Tom Izzo,

Dale Brown, Hubie Brown, Del Harris, Tubby Smith, and John-ny Jones. He also visited with writers Jackie McMullan and Da-

vid Aldridge. And then there were the players. Herb had the opportunity to talk to Chris Paul, Julius Erving, Bernard King,

Isaiah Thomas, and Jamaal Wilkes. On the night of the speeches, not only did he get to walk the red carpet, he also had a great seat surrounded by Calvin Murphy, Gary Payton, Ralph Sampson,

and Earl “The Pearl” Monroe. Herb said he enjoyed visiting with Monroe, who he used to watch perform for the Baltimore Bullets,

when he lived just outside of Baltimore as a young boy. The ultimate highlight, Herb tells us, was the chance to briefly speak

to and shake the hand of the great Bill Russell. Joining Shaquille O'Neal in the 2016 Class of the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame were Allen Iverson, Yao Ming, Sheryl Swoopes, Coach Tom

Izzo and Chicago Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf.

Hall of Fame basketball coach Jerry Matthews passed away on July 31 after a 10 month battle with bladder cancer. Jerry had coaching stints at Corsicana (twice), Port Neches-Groves, SA Lee and East Texas State University. He spent 17 of his 34 year career at Corsicana where his 1969 team lost in the final four to state champ Kerrville Tivy before winning the third place trophy in class 3A. He was inducted into the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001. He was 82 years old. ********************************************************************************************************************** Robert Loper of Frankston is finally hanging up his whistle after 50 years in coaching with 41 as a head coach. He had stops at Neches, Gary, New Summerfield, Bullard, Jacksonville MS and the majority at Frankston. He also coached girls at Neches and New Summerfield for 3 years. For his career as a head coach he had 867 wins on the boys’ side (610 at Frankston). Add to that over 50 wins on the girls’ side and Robert had over 900 varsity career wins including 22 playoff teams, 6 regional tournaments and one final four. His 2002 team lost by one in the state finals to Little River Academy in class 2A. Enjoy retirement. ********************************************************************************************************************** Jim Forbes of El Paso Andress HS recently attended the TABC board meeting as the El Paso liaison. Jim played college basketball for the legend-ary Don Haskins at UTEP and he was also a member of the 1972 USA Olympic basketball team that lost to the Russians in the controversial final game. The last 2 seconds were played 3 times before the USSR was able to score the game winner. Jim was guarding the Russian who scored the game winner after shutting him down the previous 2 possessions. We appreciate Jim continuing to give back to basketball after going through the biggest injustice in Olympic history. His leadership and example as a player and coach spans six decades.

TABC in association with the Texas Athletic Directors Association is offering complimentary membership to

Texas Athletic Directors, Principals and Superinten-dents. Many of these people are former coaches and

friends of basketball. We welcome them and would like their input on how we can help their basketball

programs. If your administrators would like to join TABC, all we need is their e-mail address so they can receive our newsletter and a mailing address where we

can send their membership card. Please share this information with administrators. We would like to say

welcome to those who have already joined. We appre-ciate your support.
