I have often heard that if you want to get something done, ask the busiest person that you know. There are some people who are just doers, and CALS is blessed to have had a lot of doers on our board of directors, over the years. Each of these individuals is busy with their jobs and personal life, and yet they find the time to volunteer their resources for the good of CALS. I have been fortunate to have worked with some outstanding individuals who don’t always get acknowledged, but without their help, this organization would not be as strong as it is today. Please forgive me if I have overlooked anyone, but I would personally like to thank Susan Mattern, Alan Fenrow and Rick Howard for going above and way be-yond what anyone could hope for from a volunteer this year. We owe them each a debt of gratitude. Remember, we are all part of this association. Please consider getting involved on any level. You will meet great people and find your experience to be very reward-ing.

Land Surveyor News Taken, with permission, from an article written by

CALS Sustaining Member LaFave, White & McGivern

A memorial fund has been setup for a young land surveyor who recently lost his life while on the job.

The surveyor, John Crockett, was working on the side of a road in North Tulsa, OK, when he was hit

and killed by oncoming traffic this past November. The driver reportedly lost control of her vehicle,

and briefly fled the scene until family members told her to return and report the incident.

This is a tragic accident, and we are incredibly sad to see a fellow land surveyor lose his life, especially

because he leaves behind two young daughters. The surveyor’s employer has since decided to start a

fund for his children, and is asking anyone who is willing and able to make a contribution. If you are

interested in sporting this man’s family, you can send donations to RCB Bank, 5000 West Kenosha

Street, Broken Arrow, OK, 74012. Checks should be made payable to “Cianna and Kyra Crockett.”

The community of land surveyors across the country is smaller than you may think, and we are always

on the lookout for members and their families in need of help. If you know of any other similar inci-

dents involving land surveyors whether in your town or elsewhere, please share that information with

us.

Finally, no matter what type of work you do, we wish you peace and safety while on the job and off.

Hobby Has Travelers Looking For Spots Where Three States Touch

Article courtesy of the Hartford Courant & Associated Press

Written by Pat Eaton-Robb, AP

This July 12, 2017 photo show the granite monument that marks the spot where Connecticut, Massachusetts and

Rhode Island meet in Thompson, CT. There’s an unusual travel hobby that has people visiting the woods of

Thompson, and other remote spots across the country. The visitors are looking for tripoints, spots where three states

meet.

Brian Butler is a tripointer. The 63-year-old lives in Holliston, Mass., about 20 miles from the Connecticut and Rhode Island borders. That's where he picked up the unusual hobby of visiting spots where at least three states or three Canadian provinces meet. Butler says he was hiking near his home in Douglas State Forest with a topographical map in 1998 when he decided to look for the point where the three southern New England states meet. He found it at the top of a rocky hill, in the middle of the forest, near an old railroad bed. It was marked by a 4-foot granite obelisk engraved with the abbreviations for Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island, and the date 1883. "As soon as you see that thing, you're hooked," he said. "You say, 'Wow, I wonder if there are more of these things.'" There are. Butler did some research and found 65 such spots where at least three state borders intersect and four in Canada, where provinces meet. Some are marked with monuments, others with survey markers, and some aren't marked at all. There are 38 on land, and most are in remote areas.

Page 10: September 2017 Volume 23, Issue 9 The Connecticut Surveyor · 2018-04-27 · September 2017 Volume 23, Issue 9 The Connecticut Surveyor Inside this issue President’s Forum 2 Field

Butler estimates he and his brother, Gregg, have visited 35 to 40 tripoints. There have been some adventures along the way — hiking, boating and sometimes flying into remote areas. They had to use metal rods to poke in the sand to find the marker for the Massachusetts-Vermont-New Hampshire tripoint, which was buried when a dam was built along the Connecticut River. They had to talk their way into a refinery, which sits on the intersection of New Jersey, Delaware and Pennsylvania. They took an inflatable kayak down the Mississippi to find several tripoints located on the water. The capstone of his adventures, Butler said, was a trip to Can-ada to find where Saskatchewan, Manitoba, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut meet. "You drive as far north as you can on pavement in Saskatche-wan," he said "Then you drive on a gravel road for 260 miles to an airport. Then you take a seaplane to a lake. Then you hike," he said. "I don't think we're ever going to beat that one." Butler documents the adventures on his website, the Corner Corner. Surprisingly, he has never been to the most famous mul-tipoint on the list, the Four Corners monument where Arizo-na, Colorado, Utah and New Mexico come together. There is no one governmental body responsible for the up-keep of monuments, and some, like Four Corners, are in much better shape than others. Dan Webb, the chief border surveyor with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management in Utah, helped place a granite monument on the Utah-Arizona-Nevada corner last fall with cooperation from all three states. It replaced a deteriorating sandstone monument that was erected in 1901. The spot is about 15 miles off I-70 and hard to access, even with a four-wheel drive vehicle, he said. But there were flags in the ground and other indications that tourists had found the spot. "Just in the few-month period that we were working on this, we would have a group of ATVers come up almost every day to talk to us about it," he said. "And they were there just to find that corner." In Thompson, town officials have worked for the last several years to improve access to the southern New England tripoint, where Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts meet. Visitors can now hike or ride a bicycle down the stone-dust covered Airline Trail to a hiking trail created by the town that leads to the tripoint. "It used to be very hard to find," said Charlie Obert, with the town of Thompson's trails committee. "Now there is a very nice sign at the bottom of the hill pointing the way."

“HURRICANE HARVEY” TEXAS & LOUISIANA FLOODING WE NEED YOUR HELP!

T he news about the tremendous flooding and wind damage in Texas is virtually 24 hours a

day. President Trump has declared Texas a “Disaster Area” and as I write this, has just de-

clared Louisiana a “Disaster Area”. The torrential rains, already over 30” in many areas, with an-

other 20” predicted, will not be over for several more days.

Many surveyors, their employees and their families will be the victims of this flooding! These sur-

veyors will lose most of their furniture, appliances and clothing and their offices to the flood wa-

ters. Some will not be located in a FEMA designated flood zone and will have no flood insurance!

Others will have flood insurance on the buildings but no contents!

I can tell you personally that being a flood victim is a devastating experience! I was wiped out in

Super Storm Sandy. The effects of that flooding are still with me and the communities hit by that

storm. There are still many abandoned homes and businesses four years after Sandy!

My point is that Your Foundation needs donations! We need money to replenish our Disaster Re-

lief Fund and satisfy the claims that will be arriving from Texas and Louisiana! Our Disaster Re-

lief fund is there to help our fellow professionals (THAT MEANS YOU) recover from floods,

storms, tornados, fires and any other natural or manmade disaster. You never know when you are

going to need help. I sure didn’t!

Please be as generous as possible with your donations. I know that times are still difficult in some

areas but send whatever you can afford. We will gratefully accept any donation you can make!
